The award was first presented to American singer Pepe Aguilar in 2001. Mexican performer Vicente Fernández and Aguilar both hold the record for the most awards with 5, out of ten nominations and twelve nominations. Mexican singer Alicia Villarreal is the most nominated performer without a win, with three unsuccessful nominations. Mexican-American performer Jenni Rivera is the first and only female artist to have won the award. In 2014, the category was disestablished. [3]
