The Long Island Community Hospital (LICH), formerly Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, is a community hospital in East Patchogue, New York in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County. It is affiliated with the NYU Langone Health System.

History

Long Island Community Hospital opened in 1956. [1]

In the 2010s, the hospital's Knapp Cardiac Care Center was erected. [2] [3] The facility, which opened in 2016, also includes a care & therapy center for veterans. [3]

In 2018, the hospital proposed changing its name from Brookhaven Memorial Hospital to "Long Island Medical Center." However, the name was never implemented, and it ultimately would be renamed Long Island Community Hospital. [4] [5] [1]

In 2022, the hospital became affiliated with NYU Langone Health, with the merger being approved by state and federal agencies in late 2021. [6] [7] It was announced that merger was expected to take three years to fully complete. [7]

Controversies

The hospital has previously received backlash for poor treating and sanitation. [8] [9] A total of nine citations resulted from five inspections of this facility from January 1, 2020, through December 31, 2022. There were 8 inspections resulting in no citations. [9]

Long Beach Medical Center was a 403-bed teaching and community hospital located in Long Beach, New York. Long Beach Hospital was destroyed as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Nearby South Nassau Communities Hospital now operates a freestanding emergency department on the site of the former Long Beach Hospital.

Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center at Long Island Jewish Medical Center (CCMC), formerly Schneider Children's Hospital and North Shore-LIJ Children's Hospital is a pediatric acute care children's teaching hospital located in New Hyde Park, New York. Hassenfeld Children's Hospital has 102 pediatric beds and is located in the Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Pavilion. It is directly affiliated with the pediatrics department of the New York University Grossman School of Medicine. The hospital treats infants, children, teens, and young adults aged 0–21, with some programs treating up until age 25. While not a trauma center, Hassenfeld Children's Hospital contains the KiDS Emergency Department to treat children with injuries.
