Lorena Brandl (born 15 May 1997) is a German taekwondo athlete. She is the 2024 European Champion and 2022 world bronze medallist in the women's +73 kg weight category.
Brandl started practising the Korean martial arts taekwondo in 2007 and participated in her first international competition in 2013. She competed for the German national team for the first time in 2014, the same year she took part in her first European Championships (U21). [2] In 2015, she finished first at the U21 European Championships in Bucharest, [3] and she won a bronze medal at the 2017 U21 European Championships in Sofia. [4]
Brandl competed in the World Championships in 2015 in Chelyabinsk, 2017 in Muju and 2019 in Manchester in the +73 kg weight category, where she remained without a medal each time. In 2016, she participated in the European Championships in Montreaux, 2018 in Kazan, 2021 in Sofia and 2022 in Manchester. In 2019, she was runner-up in the +67 kg weight class at the Extra European Championships in Bari. [4] [5] In 2021, she was a participant in the qualifying tournament for the Tokyo Olympics, where she finished third in the +67 kg weight class, but did not qualify to compete in the Olympic Games. At the 2021 Women's World Championships, Brandl won a bronze medal. [4]
Brandl won the gold medal in the +67 kg class at the 2022 Grand Prix in Manchester. She also won a bronze at the 2023 Grand Prix in Taiyuan. [6] [7] [8] In 2022, she participated in the World Championships in Guadalajara and won a bronze medal in the +73 kg weight class. [9]
Brandl competed at the 2023 World Championships in Baku, where she lost in the +73 kg weight class in the opening fight (round of 32) to Nika Klepac of Croatia. [10] In January 2024, due to her being in 8th place in the Olympic rankings, she qualified a quota place in the +67 kg weight class at the 2024 Olympic Games for Germany. [4]
At the 2024 European Championships in Belgrade, Brandl became European Champion after beating Nafia Kuş from Turkey in the finale. [4] [11] On 14 May, the German Olympic Sports Confederation nominated Brandl to participate in the Summer Olympic Games in August 2024. [12] In August, she represented Germany at the 2024 Summer Olympics, where she competed in the +67 kg event and defeated Arlettys Acosta in the round of 16. Brandl lost to Althéa Laurin in the quarter finals, but since Laurin later advanced to the final, Brandl competed in the repechage match. Here, she won against Munira Abdusalomova from Tajikistan and therefore qualified to the bronze medal contest, where she fought against Lee Dab-in. In the bronze medal match, Brandl lost to Lee and hence took fifth place. [13] [14]
Brandl completed an apprenticeship as a warehouse logistics specialist. Afterwards, she joined the Bundeswehr's sports support group (German: Sportfördergruppe der Bundeswehr) in 2016 and has been a Soldier-Athlete (German: Sportsoldat) ever since. [2]
Helena Fromm is a German taekwondo athlete. Representing Germany at the 2007 World Taekwondo Championships in Beijing, China, she won the bronze medal in the welterweight (–67 kg) division. In 2008, she participated in the European Taekwondo Championships in Rome, Italy, and won the gold medal in the welterweight division, winning over Gwladys Épangue of France in the final.
Bat-El Gatterer is an Israeli Olympic taekwondo athlete. She was the women's 2010 European featherweight champion.
Jade Louise Jones is a Welsh taekwondo athlete. She is the 2012 and 2016 Olympic gold medallist in the women's 57 kg category, and the 2019 World champion, 2016, 2018 and 2021 European champion and both 2015 European Games and 2023 European Games champion at the same weight, the only double gold medalist at her weight in the history of those Games. In 2012, she won Britain's first taekwondo Olympic gold medal. Jones was at the time the reigning Youth Olympic champion in the girls' 55 kg category, winning gold for Great Britain in 2010.
Kimia Alizadeh Zonouzi is an Iranian-born Bulgarian taekwondo athlete, representing Bulgaria. Alizadeh won a bronze medal in the taekwondo 57 kg weight class at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro by defeating Swedish athlete Nikita Glasnović. This made her the first Iranian woman to win a medal at a Summer Olympics. She also won a gold medal in the women's 63-kg class at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games. She beat London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016 gold medallist Jade Jones at the 2015 World Championship to win a bronze medal. She also won a silver medal two years later at the 2017 World Taekwondo Championships.
Nafia Kuş Aydın is a world and European champion Turkish female taekwondo practitioner competing in the heavyweight division. She won the gold medal in the women's heavyweight event at the 2023 World Taekwondo Championships held in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Lauren Williams is a Welsh taekwondo athlete who represents Great Britain.
Svetlana Osipova is an Uzbek taekwondo athlete and a member of the Uzbekistan national team. In 2017, she won a silver medal at the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games. In 2018 and 2023, she earned bronze medals at the Summer Asian Games. In 2019, she secured a gold medal at the World Military Games. In 2022, she won a gold medal at the World Taekwondo Championship, and in 2023, she claimed a silver medal.
Rebecca McGowan is a Scottish taekwondo practitioner. She is twice a medalist in the women's +73 kg event at the World Taekwondo Championships. She is also three-times a medalist, including gold, in this event at the European Taekwondo Championships.
Avishag Semberg is an Israeli Olympic taekwondo athlete. She is an Olympic bronze medalist for Israel at the 2020 Summer Olympics in the women's 49 kg competition. She won Israel's all-time tenth Olympic medal, and is the youngest Israeli to receive an Olympic medal, at the age of 19. Semberg represented Israel at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the women's taekwondo -49 kg category. Saudi athlete Dunya Abutaleb defeated Semberg in the first round.
Ela Aydin is a German taekwondo athlete. Her greatest achievements are a bronze medal at the 2022 Grand Prix in Paris and two bronze medals at European Championships.
