Lorenzo Passerini (born 1991) is an Italian conductor who began as a trombonist. He has worked at major opera houses in Europe and Australia, such as Verdi's Un ballo in maschera at the Teatro Real in Madrid, Gounod's Faust at the Sydney Opera House, and a new production of Giordano's Fedora at the Oper Frankfurt in 2022.

Career

Passerini was born in Morbegno, Sondrio. [1] [2] He studied trombone at the Como Conservatory, [3] graduating in 2009. He studied further at the Aosta Conservatory, achieving a master's degree in 2014. He played in orchestras, touring internationally, with conductors including John Axelrod, Andrey Boreyko, Fabio Luisi and Riccardo Muti. [1]

At the same time, he turned to conducting, first studying with Ennio Nicotra in 2010. [2] He also received tuition from Oleg Caetani, Massimiliano Caldi  [ it ], Pietro Mianiti  [ it ] and Gilberto Serembe. [1] He founded the Antonio Vivaldi Orchestra in 2011, and made his debut concert with them. Composers such as Piergiorgio Ratti, Antonio Eros Negri and Andrea Battistoni  [ it ] composed music for the orchestra. [1]

He has conducted the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, the Orchestra della Fondazione Arena di Verona, [3] the Mexico State Orchestra, and the Symphony Orchestra “New Russia” in Moscow in concerts. In opera, he conducted Puccini's Tosca at the Teatro Regio in Turin, Orff's Carmina Burana at the Wielki Theatre in Warsaw, Verdi's Un ballo in maschera at the Teatro Real in Madrid, and Rossini's La Cenerentola at the opera of Las Palmas. He conducted repeatedly at the Sydney Opera House, Gounod's Faust , Verdi's Aida and Puccini's La Bohème . [2] [3]

He conducted Giordano's Fedora at the Oper Frankfurt whe the work was first performed at the house in 2022, [4] directed by Christof Loy, with Nadja Stefanoff and Jonathan Tetelman in the leading roles. [3] [5] Reviewer Jan Brachmann from the FAZ noted that he led the orchestra "bright awake" (hellwach) and with sensitivity, letting the singers dominate even when singing softly. [6] A reviewer from Neue Musikzeitung noted that he offered temperament for the Russian music of the first act, sensitivity for the Paris "perfume" of the second act, and dramatic approach for the ending in failure and death. [5] Another reviewer summarised: "Long forgotten and neglected, Passerini brings this opera to new life in a fresh, sparkling and supremely elegant dramatic conducting" ("Die lang vergessene und vernachlässigte Oper lässt Passerini in einem frischen, spritzigen und überaus elegant dramatischen Dirigat zu neuem Leben erwecken"). From 2017, Passerini has been artistic director of the concerts at the Teatro Sociale Sondrio. [3]

She made her debut in Spoleto in 1950, as Leonora in Verdi's Il trovatore, a year later at Rome Opera, as Leonora in La forza del destino, in 1954 at La Scala in Milan, as Desdemona in Otello, in 1955 at the Royal Opera House in London as Aida, and in 1956 at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, in the same role.

Nello Santi was an Italian conductor. He was associated with the Opernhaus Zürich for six decades, and was a regular conductor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. He was focused on Italian repertoire, especially operas by Verdi and Puccini, in a style following the tradition of Toscanini. He made sound and video recordings of Italian operas, including in 1971 Leoncavallo's Pagliacci with Plácido Domingo, Montserrat Caballé and Sherrill Milnes, in 1976 Montemezzi's L'amore dei tre re with Anna Moffo, Domingo and Pablo Elvira, in 2000 Verdi's I due Foscari, and in 2006 Donizetti's Don Pasquale in a Zürich production. Santi conducted from memory, and said "I love all of Verdi, but when he composed Rigoletto, Il trovatore and La traviata he was in a profound state of grace."

Tichina Vaughn is an American operatic dramatic mezzo-soprano active internationally in opera, concert halls and recitals. Starting at the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera, her American career expanded into Europe, as member of the permanent ensembles of the Semperoper in Dresden and the Stuttgart Opera, where she was awarded the title of Kammersängerin in 2006. She has been a regular at the Arena di Verona and other major theaters worldwide, singing a wide repertoire span, with a "voluminous and dark mezzo" voice the dramatic Verdi roles such as Amneris in Aida, Eboli in Don Carlo, Azucena in Il trovatore and Ulrica in Un ballo in maschera, Wagner's Ortrud Lohengrin, Venus Tannhäuser, Fricka Die Walküre, Waltraute in Götterdämmerung and Strauss, Herodias in Salome and Klytemnestra in Elektra. According to Opernglas, Vaughn has a natural "great intensity" on stage, with an ample "voice, which flows richly, even in the low registers." The Neue Zürcher Zeitung describes her voice as an "enchanting satisfyingly rich mezzosoprano". Bernard Holland of The New York Times called hers "A voice of quality", which had "the presence and personality that might well fit the Met... a mezzo-soprano whose strong upper register gave hints of a dramatic soprano to come".

Kwangchul Youn is a South Korean operatic bass and academic voice teacher. He made an international career based in Germany, from 1994 to 2004 at the Berlin State Opera. He has performed leading roles at international opera houses and festivals, such as Gurnemanz in Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival, Mephisto in Faust at the Vienna State Opera, and King Marke in Tristan und Isolde at the Metropolitan Opera.

Anja Petersen is a German operatic soprano and university lecturer. She works as a soloist in opera and concert, and as a member of the RIAS Kammerchor. She has appeared in world premieres in both opera and concert, including the leading female role in Arnulf Herrmann's Der Mieter at the Oper Frankfurt in 2017.

Nadja Stefanoff is a German operatic soprano based at the Staatstheater Mainz. She began her career as a mezzo-soprano. She has performed leading roles there and as a guest at major opera houses in Europe, such as Marta in Weinberg's Die Passagierin at the Oper Graz, and Giordano's Fedora at the Oper Frankfurt.

Jonathan Tetelman is an American operatic tenor, who made an international career especially at leading opera houses of Europe, in roles including Verdi's Alfredo, Massenet's Werther, Puccini's Rodolfo, Cavaradossi and Pinkerton, and Giordano's Loris Ipanov, the role that made Caruso famous.
