The African National Congress (ANC) is the Republic of South Africa's governing political party. It has been the ruling party of post-apartheid South Africa since the election of Nelson Mandela in the 1994 election, winning every election since then. Cyril Ramaphosa, the incumbent President of South Africa, has served as leader of the ANC since 18 December 2017.
The Northern Cape is the largest and most sparsely populated province of South Africa. It was created in 1994 when the Cape Province was split up. Its capital is Kimberley. It includes the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, part of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and an international park shared with Botswana. Otta Helene Maree, known as Helen Zille, is a South African politician. She has served as the Federal Council Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance since 20 October 2019. From 2009 until 2019, she was the Premier of the Western Cape province for two five-year terms, and a member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament. She served as Federal Leader of the Democratic Alliance from 2007 to 2015 and as Mayor of Cape Town from 2006 to 2009.
South Africa held national and provincial elections to elect a new National Assembly as well as the provincial legislature in each province on 22 April 2009.
Lynne Brown is a South African politician who is a former Minister of Public Enterprises and former Premier of the Western Cape Province. She was born in Cape Town and grew up in Mitchell's Plain. She was appointed Premier of the Western Cape following the resignation of Ebrahim Rasool in July 2008. Previously, she was Minister for Economic Development and Tourism. She is a member of the African National Congress and elected member of its National Executive Committee in 2007 and 2012. Like her predecessor Ebrahim Rasool she is also from a coloured background. She is the fourth coloured premier of the Western Cape, and the second from the African National Congress, and is the first openly gay person to be appointed to a cabinet post in any African government.
The Congress of the People (COPE) is a South African political party formed in 2008 by former members of the African National Congress (ANC). The party was founded by former ANC members Mosiuoa Lekota, Mbhazima Shilowa and Mluleki George to contest the 2009 general election. The party was announced following a national convention held in Sandton on 1 November 2008, and was founded at a congress held in Bloemfontein on 16 December 2008. The name echoes the 1955 Congress of the People at which the Freedom Charter was adopted by the ANC and other parties, a name strongly contested by the ANC in a legal move dismissed by the Pretoria High Court.
Tina Joemat-Pettersson is a South African politician and the former Minister of Energy from 25 May 2014 to 31 March 2017. She was previously the Minister of agriculture, forestry, and fisheries from 2009-2014.
Elizabeth Dipuo Peters was the Minister of Transport of the Republic of South Africa from 10 July 2013 until 30 March 2017, in the Zuma administration, and former Minister of Energy from 2009-2013 having served as successor to Manne Dipico as the second Premier of the Northern Cape Province, 22 April 2004 to 10 May 2009. A member of the African National Congress (ANC), she serves on the Women's League National Executive Committee. Dipuo Peters resigned as a member of parliament for the African National Congress in April 2017.
Cedric Thomas Frolick, is the current House Chairperson: Committees, Oversight and ICT in the National Assembly of Parliament for the Republic of South Africa. A teacher, politician, anti-apartheid activist. He retired from teaching in 1999 and subsequently became a politician in the National Assembly. On 18 November 2010, the ANC appointed him as the House Chairperson responsible for Committees, ICT and Oversight.
The nine provinces of South Africa are governed by provincial governments which form the second layer of government, between the national government and the municipalities. The provincial governments are established, and their structure defined, by Chapter Six of the Constitution of South Africa.
Grizelda Boniwe Cjiekella was MEC for Education in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa, and served as Acting Premier of the province from 20 February 2012 until 2 April 2013.
Sylvia Elizabeth Lucas is the current Deputy Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces in the Republic of South Africa, after having taken office on 23 May 2019. From 2013 to 2019, she served as the 4th Premier of the Northern Cape Province. She was elected and inaugurated as the successor to Hazel Jenkins. Lucas briefly served as acting premier and before her appointment, as the MEC for Environmental Affairs in the Northern Cape Provincial Government.
General elections were held in South Africa on 8 May 2019 to elect a new National Assembly and provincial legislatures in each province. These were the sixth elections held since the end of apartheid in 1994 and determined who would become the next President of South Africa.
Nomfunelo Rose-Mary Mabedla is a South African politician representing the African National Congress (ANC) and a trade unionist. She is a former Member of Parliament of the National Assembly between 2009 and 2014.
Zamani Saul is a South African politician who is the 5th Premier of the Northern Cape and a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature. He has also been serving as the Provincial Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) since his election on 12 May 2017. He previously served as the Provincial Secretary and the Deputy Provincial Secretary of the party.
Maruping Matthews Lekwene is a South African politician serving as the Northern Cape MEC for Health since June 2020 and a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature for the African National Congress (ANC) since June 2014. He was the Northern Cape MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism from May 2019 until June 2020. Lekwene is also the provincial chairperson of the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the ANC's deputy provincial secretary.
Galerekwe Mase Manopole is a South African politician and a member of the African National Congress (ANC) serving as a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature since 10 October 2017. She was previously a Delegate of the National Council of Provinces. From May 2019 to June 2020, Manopole was Northern Cape MEC for Health. In June 2020, she was named Northern Cape MEC for Land Reform, Agriculture and Nature Conservation and Environmental Affairs.
Alvin Botes is a South African African National Congress (ANC) politician who has been serving as the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation since May 2019. He became a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa in February 2018. He served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Social Development from 2009 to 2013 and the MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs from 2013 to 2018. Botes was a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2018.
Mxolisa Simon Sokatsha is a South African accountant, educator and politician who has been serving as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since 2019. He was a Member of the Executive Council of the Northern Cape from 2009 to 2019 and a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature from 2003 to 2019. Sokatsha is a member of the African National Congress.
