Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje was a South African intellectual, journalist, linguist, politician, translator and writer. Plaatje was a founder member and first General Secretary of the South African Native National Congress (SANNC), which became the African National Congress (ANC). The Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, which includes the city of Kimberley, is named after him, as is the Sol Plaatje University in that city, which opened its doors in 2014.

The Northern Cape Provincial Legislature is the legislature of the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It is a unicameral body of 30 members elected every five years. The current legislature was elected on 8 May 2019 and has an African National Congress majority of 18 members. It is situated in Kimberley, in a newly built complex to the west of the city centre on the edge of Galeshewe.

Maruping Matthews Lekwene is a South African politician serving as the Northern Cape MEC for Health since June 2020. He has been a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature for the African National Congress (ANC) since June 2014. He was the Northern Cape MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism from May 2019 until June 2020. Within the Northern Cape provincial government, he served the MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison from 2009 to 2013, and was the MEC for Environment and Nature Conservation between 2013 and 2014.
David Lesole Dichaba is a South African politician who serves as a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature. He took office as an MPL on 22 May 2019. He is the Chairperson of both the Portfolio Committee on Education, Sport, Arts & Culture and the Standing Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Petitions and Public Participation. Dichaba is a member of the ruling African National Congress (ANC).

She took office as an MPL on 22 May 2019. She is the Deputy Chair of Chairs and the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs. Koloi was previously the Executive Mayor of the Dawid Kruiper Local Municipality.

Mmabatho Olive Mokause is a South African politician serving as a Delegate of the National Council of Provinces for the Northern Cape since March 2020. She is a member of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Mokause had formerly been a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature from May 2014 to April 2015. She was appointed a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa, the lower house of Parliament, in April 2015 and held the post until January 2018. After the May 2019 general election, she returned to the National Assembly but resigned in September. She was selected to represent the EFF in the upper house in March 2020.
