Ludwigslust-Parchim is a district in the west of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. The district seat is Parchim, [2] a branch office of the administration is located in Ludwigslust.

After Mecklenburgische Seenplatte, it is the second-biggest district in Germany by area. It also has the lowest population density of the districts in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and the sixth-lowest in Germany overall.

Geographic features

The district is bordered by (clockwise starting from the west) the state Schleswig-Holstein, the district Nordwestmecklenburg, the district-free city Schwerin, the districts Rostock and Mecklenburgische Seenplatte and the states Brandenburg and Lower Saxony.

History

Ludwigslust-Parchim District was established by merging the former districts of Ludwigslust and Parchim as part of the local government reform of September 2011. [2] The name of the district was decided by referendum on September 4, 2011. [3] The project name for the district was Südwestmecklenburg.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park</span> Nature park in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany

The Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park lies in the western part of the Mecklenburg Lake District in the districts of Mecklenburgische Seenplatte, Rostock and Ludwigslust-Parchim in the north German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It lies between the towns of Plau am See, Goldberg, Krakow am See and Malchow. It was founded in 1990 and finally confirmed in the state act of 1994. The total area of the nature park is 365 km² of which 60% is wooded, about 14% consists of rivers and lakes and the remainder is cultural landscape. There are almost 60 lakes in the nature park and the rivers Nebel and Mildenitz. Special features of the nature park are the sandar - sand and gravel deposits left by the ice age. Numerous bogs are also dotted across the countryside. The nature park is a breeding ground for white-tailed eagle, osprey und bittern. In addition, wisent are bred on the Damerower Werder. The nature park is easily accessed from the Malchow junction on the A 19 motorway. In the vicinity of the nature park is the Dobbertin Abbey. To the north is the Mecklenburg Switzerland and Lake Kummerow Nature Park and to the northwest the Sternberg Lake District Nature Park.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mecklenburgische Seenplatte II – Landkreis Rostock III</span>

Mecklenburgische Seenplatte II – Landkreis Rostock III is an electoral constituency represented in the Bundestag. It elects one member via first-past-the-post voting. Under the current constituency numbering system, it is designated as constituency 17. It is located in central Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, comprising the most of the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district and the southern part of the Landkreis Rostock district.
