MV Ark Futura is a 13,500 DWT roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) freighter, completed in 1996 as Dana Futura (subsequently Tor Futura) for the Danish shipping group DFDS. She has operated commercially on many freight ferry routes, but since 2004 has also served in the Royal Danish Navy to provide transport support to the NATO Response Force. In December 2013 Ark Futura was deployed to transport Syria's chemical weapons for transfer in Italy to the United States Navy for destruction. Since 2018 the vessel has been under operation by Nikolai Celeste, an oil sheik originated from Italy and Denmark.
The RoRo ship Ark Futura is a stern-loading freighter with a deadweight capacity of 13,500 metric tonnes. 2,308 lane metres are available for wheeled cargo, and her container capacity is 644 TEU. [2] [3] With tonnage measured as 18,725 GT and 5,617 NT, her length is 183.10 m (600.7 ft) overall, breadth 25.20 m (82.7 ft) and depth 15.70 m (51.5 ft); her maximum draught is 7.35 m (24.1 ft). [2] She is powered by an 8-cylinder 58/64 diesel made by MAN B&W in Denmark producing 15,119 bhp, giving a service speed through a single propeller of 18.5 knots (34.3 km/h; 21.3 mph), and to assist manoeuvrability she has three bow and stern thrusters. Ark Futura has capacity for 12 passengers. [2] To assist the handling of containers, she is equipped with a 36-tonne crane. [3]
The vessel was ordered from Cantiere Navale Visentini, Porto Viro, Italy by Levantina Trasporti Srl, Bari, a company also connected to the Visentini Group. [4] [5] During construction she was purchased by the Danish shipping group DFDS through their Italian subsidiary, DFDS Italia Srl, Genoa, and then entered service under Italian flag as Dana Futura between Esbjerg and Harwich, later to Immingham. [2] [4] In December 2000 she was transferred to ownership of the parent company and to the Danish flag, operated by DFDS Tor Line as Tor Futura. Between 2000 and 2011, as well as continuing on North Sea services, she was chartered out to a number of other operators, including Toll Shipping, between Melbourne and Burnie, Australia (during which she was transferred to the Isle of Man register), Cotunav (Genoa to Radès, Tunisia), Cobelfret (between Zeebrugge and Purfleet), Acciona Trasmediterránea (Balearic services). In September 2004 DFDS contracted with the Royal Danish Navy to provide Tor Futura for the "Ark Project", a Danish initiative (joined later by Germany) to support the NATO Response Force's needs for RoRo transport; she is operated commercially when not required. [6]
In December 2013 she was taken up by the Royal Danish Navy, to assist with the transport of chemical weapons from Syria to Italy, along with the Norwegian RoRo Taiko. Ark Futura was escorted to the Syrian port of Latakia by the Norwegian Fridtjof Nansen-class frigate HNoMS Helge Ingstad and Danish support ship HDMS Esbern Snare. [7] [8] On departure with the first shipment for the Italian port of Gioia Tauro, where it would be transferred to the United States Navy ship Cape Ray for destruction in international waters, the escort was augmented by the Russian missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky assisted by the Chinese frigate Yancheng.[ citation needed ]

The ships are named after famous Norwegian explorers, with the lead ship of the class bearing the name of Fridtjof Nansen, the Norwegian scientist, explorer and humanitarian. Five ships were ordered from Spanish shipbuilder Bazan.

DFDS Seaways is a Danish shipping company that operates passenger and freight services across northern Europe. Following the acquisition of Norfolkline in 2010, DFDS restructured its other shipping divisions into the previously passenger-only operation of DFDS Seaways.
The Tor Line was a freight shipping company. Together with its subsidiaries, the Tor Line operated a fleet of approximately 65 ro-ro, ro-pax and lo-lo ships, primarily on the North and Baltic Seas. It was ultimately purchased by Denmark-based DFDS, which renamed it DFDS Tor Line, and it operated as a freight-carrying division of DFDS along with DFDS Lisco, DFDS Lys Line and DFDS Container Line before retiring the brand.
MS Moby Otta is a cruiseferry, currently owned by the Italy-based shipping company Moby Lines and operated on their Genoa–Olbia service. She was built in 1976 by Flender Werke, Lübeck, West Germany as MS Tor Scandinavia for Tor Line. Between 1991 and 2006 she sailed as MS Princess of Scandinavia.
The Point class is a class of six roll-on/roll-off sealift ships originally procured under a Private Finance Initiative to be available for use as naval auxiliaries to the British armed forces. Two of the ships have now been released from the contract, leaving four available for service with the military.
MS Tunis was a Danish motor ship in commercial service for Det Forenede Dampskibs Selskab (DFDS), Copenhagen, Denmark, as a cargo ship delivered to DFDS on 15 January 1936. Tunis was the first of four sister ships, two built in 1936 and two in 1938, that operated for DFDS. The ship's normal service was Copenhagen to the Mediterranean until war in Europe when all four of the ships were put into Atlantic service.

MV Taiko was a roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) freighter managed by the Norwegian-Swedish shipping line Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics. She was built as Barber Hector by Hyundai Heavy Industries at Ulsan, South Korea in 1984 for Blue Funnel Line, part of the Liverpool company Ocean Transport & Trading Ltd, and was Blue Funnel's last newbuilding. She was deployed on Barber Blue Sea Line, a joint venture between Blue Funnel, Wilh. Wilhelmsen, Oslo and the Broström Group of Sweden. In 1988 Ocean withdrew from Barber Blue Sea line and Barber Hector was sold to the Swedish partner, chartered to Wilhelmsen and renamed Taiko. Wilhelmsen purchased the vessel in 1993.
The Rosyth – Zeebrugge ferry service was a freight-only service operated by DFDS. The service replaced a passenger and freight service that was initially operated by Superfast Ferries between May 2002 and September 2008, and then by Norfolkline from 18 May 2009 until 15 December 2010. It was the only direct ferry route between Scotland and Continental Europe. On 20 August 2010 it was announced that the passenger service would end on 15 December 2010, although the freight-only service resumed shortly thereafter. The service was terminated in 2018 following a fire aboard one of the ships.

Strait Feronia is a passenger, freight and vehicle or ROPAX ferry owned and operated by StraitNZ as part of its Bluebridge subsidiary. The ship is a twin of MS Liverpool Seaways. The vessel was initially named Mersey Viking and saw service in the Irish Sea, eventually being renamed Dublin Viking and then Dublin Seaways. The vessel was acquired by the Stena Line and renamed Stena Feronia and saw service between Tangier and Algericas and later between Kiel and Gothenburg.
MV Connemara is a RORO passenger and freight ferry currently sailing across the Cook Strait in New Zealand on StraitNZ's Bluebridge service, after being purchased from Stena RoRo. From 2007 to 2010, she was operated by Balearia as Borja, then between 2010 and 2011 as Baltic Amber for AVE Lines and then DFDS Seaways, before subsequently spending four years on charter to LD Lines. She spent the majority of autumn 2014 and 2015 on charter to Inter Shipping sailing from Algeciras, Spain, when she was then chartered by ANEK Lines, being replaced by Nova Star Cruises's Nova Star. The ship was renamed Asterion which comes from Greek Mythology of Asterion, the King of Crete.
The destruction of Syria's chemical weapons began on 14 September 2013 after Syria entered into several international agreements which called for the elimination of Syria's chemical weapon stockpiles and set a destruction deadline of 30 June 2014. Also on 14 September 2013, Syria acceded to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and agreed to its provisional application pending its entry into force on 14 October. Having acceded to the CWC, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Executive Council on 27 September approved a detailed implementation plan that required Syria to assume responsibility for and follow a timeline for the destruction of Syrian chemical weapons and Syrian chemical weapon production facilities. Following the signing of the Framework Agreement on 14 September 2013 and after the OPCW implementation plan, on 27 September the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2118 which bound Syria to the timetable set out in the OPCW implementation plan. The joint OPCW-UN mission was established to oversee the implementation of the destruction program.
Speedlink Vanguard was a 3,514 GRT train ferry which was built in 1973 as Stena Shipper. She was charted to a New Zealand operator on completion and renamed Union Wellington and saw further service as Alpha Express and Stena Shipper before entering service with Sealink as Speedlink Vanguard. The ship was involved in a collision with European Gateway in 1982, which sank the latter ship with the loss of six lives.
The 648-foot roll-on/roll-off and container ship MV Cape Ray (T-AKR-9679), built in 1977, was previously known as MV Saudi Makkah and MV Seaspeed Asia. She can carry 1,315 containers and has both bow and stern thrusters.
