Clio was a 4,558 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1939 as Bukarest by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Deutsche Levant Line. She was seized by Allied forces in 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Ettrick. She was passed to the Norwegian Government in 1940s and renamed Bremnes. In 1947, she was sold to a Norwegian company and renamed Clio. A sale to a Greek company in 1963 saw her renamed Panorea. She served until 1972, when she was renamed Charity and sold for scrapping, which occurred in 1974.
The ship was built in 1939 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg. [1] She was yard number 226. [2] She had 409,004 cubic feet (11,581.7 m3) cargo space. [3]
The ship was 409 feet 9 inches (124.89 m) long, with a beam of 55 feet 7 inches (16.94 m). She had a depth of 21 feet 3 inches (6.48 m). [4] She was assessed at 4,558 GRT, [5] 2,661 NRT, [2] 6,988 DWT. [6]
The ship was propelled by two two-stroke Single Cycle, Single Action diesel engines, which had six cylinders of 20+1⁄2 inches (52 cm) diameter by 27+9⁄16 inches (70.0 cm) stroke driving twin screw propellers. The engines were built by Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg, Augsburg. They were rated at 885 nhp, [4] 3,860 bhp. [2] They could propel her at 14 knots (26 km/h). [3]
Bukarest was launched in 1939. [1] Delivered in June, 1940, [2] she was used by the Luftwaffe during World War II as an aircraft maintenance ship. [5] In May 1945, she was seized at Kiel, Germany, as a war prize. She was passed to the MoWT and renamed Empire Ettrick. [1] She was placed under the management of the Cunard Steamship Co Ltd. [2] Her port of registry was London. The United Kingdom Official Number 180678 and Code Letters GNLR were allocated. [7] In July 1946, she was transferred to the Norwegian Government and renamed Bremnes. The Code Letters LLTN were allocated. [2]
In December 1946, Bremnes was sold to the Bergen Steamship Co, Bergen. She was renamed Clio in March 1947. [2] On 28 March, she collided with the Norwegian cargo ship Sevilla west of Bloksen. Sevilla sank with the loss of ten crew. [8] In 1953, there was a fire on board. [3] In August 1963, Clio was sold to Compania Panorea SA, Piraeus, Greece and was renamed Panorea. She was operated under the management of M A Karageorgis. Her owners became Panorea Compania Naviera SA in 1969. [2] Management was transferred to E T Kolintzas & Maltakis following this change. [1] [3] With the introduction of IMO Numbers in the late 1960s, Panorea was allocated IMO 5076078. In September 1972, Panorea was sold to United Shipowners Ltd, Famagusta, Cyprus and renamed Charity. She arrived on 22 September at Kaohsiung, Taiwan for scrapping. [2] She was scrapped in 1974. [1]
Stettin was a 2,646 GRT cargo ship which was built in 1923 for the Stettiner Dampfer Compagnie. In 1930 she was sold to Norddeutscher Lloyd and renamed Akka. She was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine in 1940. Akka was seized as a war prize in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and being renamed Empire Calder.
Ceuta was a 2,719 GRT cargo ship which was built in 1929 for the Oldenburg-Portugiesische Dampfschiffs-Reederei. She was sunk during an air raid in 1943, but later raised, repaired and returned to service. She was seized as a war prize in 1945, passed to the British Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Camel.
Azov was a 1,953 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1944 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany as Deike Rickmers for Rickmers Line. In 1945, she was seized by the Allies and passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT), renamed Empire Concord. In 1946, she was passed to the Soviet Union and renamed Azov. She served until 1973 when she was scrapped.
Theresia L M Russ was a 1,694 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1927 by Neptun AG, Rostock, Germany for Ernst Russ. She was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine for two years during the Second World War. In 1944, she was sunk by bombing at Gotenhafen, German occupied Poland. The ship was raised and repaired in 1945. She was seized by the Allies at Copenhagen and passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Concrete.
Elbe was a 1,197 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1921 by Nobiskrug Werft, Rendsburg for German owners. She was seized by the Allies at Copenhagen, Denmark in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Confederation. In 1946, she was transferred to the Soviet Union and renamed José Dias. She served until she was scrapped in 1966.
Francisco Morazan was a 1,442 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1922 as Arcadia by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, for German owners. She was sold in 1934 and renamed Elbing. She was seized by the Allies in the River Elbe, Germany in May 1945, passed to the United Kingdom's Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Congress. In 1946, she was allocated to the Norwegian Government and renamed Brunes.
Ambria was a cargo ship that was built in 1922 by Deutsche Werft, Finkenwerder for German owners. She was sold in 1934 and renamed Gumbinnen. She was sunk by a British destroyer in 1941, raised and repaired. Gumbinnen was seized by the Allies in Flensburg, in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Conleith. In 1946, she was allocated to the Norwegian Government and renamed Dragnes. She was sold into Norwegian merchant service and renamed Mimona. In 1959, she was sold and renamed Malay. She served until 1961 when she was scrapped.
Justinian was a 1,875 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1940 by Nobiskrug Werft, Rendsburg for a Norwegian owner. She was seized on completion, renamed Karl Christian Lohse and used by a German company. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945 at Flensburg, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Conningbeg.
Pinnau was a 1,198 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1922 by Nobiskrug Werft GmbH, Rendsburg, Germany for German owners. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Constructor. In 1947, she was sold into merchant service and renamed Estkon. She served until 1959 when she was scrapped.
Barlind was a 1,453 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1938 as Süderau by Deutsche Schiff- und Maschinenbau AG, Bremen, Germany for German owners. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Content. In 1946, she was allocated to Norway and renamed Svartnes. She was sold into merchant service in 1947 and renamed Barlind. In 1971, she was sold to Greece and renamed Ikaria. She served until 1972 when she was scrapped.
Eleni was a 6,112 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1947 by Lübecker Flenderwerke AG, Lübeck, Germany. She had been laid down as Greifswald for Norddeutscher Lloyd. She was captured uncompleted in May 1945 and passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT), being completed in 1948 as Empire Ely. In 1954, she was sold to a Liberian company and renamed Maribella. A sale in 1955 to West Germany saw her renamed Ganges. In 1959, she was sold to Greece and renamed Eleni, serving until she was involved in a collision in 1971. She was declared to be beyond economic and scrapped in April 1972.
Arsterturm was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Betzdorf in 1945 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Unternehmen der Eisenstahlindustrie, Bremen. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gaffer. Sold in 1947, renamed Baltrader then Baltic Fir in 1952, she was sold to West Germany in 1956, rebuilt and renamed Arsterturm. She was sold in 1969 to India and renamed Unigoolnar. A further sale in 1976 saw her renamed Sudarsan Shakti, serving until 1981 when she was scrapped.
Palmyra was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Fangturm in 1944 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Hansa Line, Bremen, Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gallop. She was sold in 1947 and renamed Baltonia, the Baltic Oak in 1953. She was sold to West Germany in 1957 and renamed Palmyra. She served until 1962, when she was sunk in a collision with another ship.
Volochaevsk was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Weserwald in 1943 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Norddeutsche Lloyd, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Galveston. She was allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946 and was renamed Volochaevsk. She served until 1973, when she was scrapped.
Pagenturm was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Schauenberg in 1944 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for H Schuldt, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Galway. She was allocated to Belgium in 1946 and was renamed Kinshasha. She was sold to Norway in 1951 and renamed Anne Reed. Sold to West Germany in 1956, she was rebuilt and renamed Pagenturm. She served until 1964, when she was scrapped.
Auriga was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Adamsturm in 1944 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Deutsche Dampfschifffarts-Gesellschaft Hansa, Bremen Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gantry. She was sold in 1947 and was renamed Baltanglia. She was renamed Baltic Pine in 1952. Sold to Greece in 1954, and renamed Germania, she was declared a constructive total loss following a collision in 1955. Sold to Germany, she was repaired and renamed Auriga. She served until 1965, when she was scrapped.
