However, the Tsonga people are in majority south of Levubu River and they constitute more than 85% of the population in the south of the historic river Levubu, while the Venda are the minority south of Levubu, at 15%. The Northern Sotho speakers number 27,000. The district code is DC34.

After the 12th amendment of the Constitution of South Africa part of the area of the Bohlabela district was incorporated into Mopani.
