Alexander Adelabu (born 27 September 1999), widely known as Magixx, [1] [2] is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. In 2021, he was signed to Mavin Records. [3] He is known for a distinctly hybrid approach fusing trap, dancehall, Afropop and R&B. In 2019, Magixx initiated his rise to fame when he released 'Problem,' a blend of Afropop and Afro R&B, showcasing his evolving musical exploration. The track quickly seized the spotlight within Nigeria's music elite, drawing admiration from notable figures like Mayorkun, M.I, Zlatan Ibile, and the influential Don Jazzy of Mavin Records. This attention culminated in his eventual signing with Mavin Records. [4]
Adelabu was born and brought up in Lagos State. He obtained a degree in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos. [5] He is known for a distinctly hybrid approach fusing trap, dancehall, Afropop and R&B.
Magixx's musical journey began in Lagos, Nigeria, where his passion for music blossomed at a young age. Introduced to artists like Fela Kuti and DMX, Magixx started experimenting with music at 12. [6] He honed his skills in the local church choir and drew inspiration from his family's diverse musical tastes, with his mother serving as a steadfast supporter.
Despite initial doubts, Magixx's talent shone through, earning recognition with a university singing competition win. This moment marked a shift in his father's perspective, leading to newfound support for Magixx's musical aspirations. Encouraged by his family's backing, Magixx began pursuing music seriously, determined to carve out a career in the industry. [4]
Magixx began singing in the choir at the age of 10. [7] In 2019, after struggling to pay for studio sessions in uni, Magixx released ‘Problem’, a showcase of the sounds he was experimenting with at that time. In September 2021, he was signed to Mavin Records and released his debut self-titled EP Magixx, in that same year. [7]
In February 2022, he released a new version of "Love Don't Cost a Dime" with Ayra Starr, which debuted at 27 on TurnTableTop 50 chart, and peaked at number 8, on 28 March 2022. [8] [9] On 20 July 2022, he released "Shaye" as the lead single from his second EP ATOM. [10] ATOM was released on 22 July 2022, to positive critical response. [11] He launched 2023 with a two-pack release with the tracks Colors (My Baby) & Loyal [12] and in August 2023, Magixx released the single "Maria," a romantic Afropop track showcasing his smooth vocals and songwriting growth. The song was produced by Louddaaa and received positive reviews from fans and music critics. [13]
In January 2025, Magixx announced his debut studio album titled I Dream In Color, which was officially released on February 28, 2025. [14] The 13-track album explores themes of love, self-discovery, resilience, and African pride, blending Afropop and R&B sounds. It features a guest appearance from Nigerian rapper Jeriq. [15]
Upon release, I Dream In Color debuted at number one on the Apple Music Nigeria Albums Chart and peaked at number three on Boomplay Nigeria Top Albums within its first week. [16] The album was praised by critics for its emotive songwriting and strong vocal performance, with standout tracks including “Voices,” “Consistency,” “With You,” and “Vibration” featuring Jeriq.
