Manjhaul (also pronounced as Majhaul or Majhauli) is a village in the Begusarai district of Bihar state in India. It is notable for the Jaimangla Garh temple [2] and Kaber Lake (Birds Sanctuary). [3]

Geography

Manjhaul is located at 25°33′25″N86°07′41″E / 25.557°N 86.128°E / 25.557; 86.128 . [4] It has an average elevation of 41 metres (135 feet). It has an area of 9.8 km2.

Climate

The climate of Manjhaul is a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cwa) with high variation between summer and winter in terms of both temperature and rainfall. The temperature varies from 46 °C (115 °F) in summers to around 11 °C (52 °F) in winters. Summers are long, extending from early April to October, with the monsoon season occurring in the middle of the summer. Winter starts in November and peaks in January. The annual mean temperature is around 25 °C (77 °F); monthly daily mean temperatures range from approximately 09 to 34 °C (48 to 93 °F). The average annual rainfall is 1384 mm of which 83% falls between Mid June and & Mid-October. Monsoon normally starts in June and lasts till October. The early monsoon currents, channelled to the NW are the principal source of rainfall of the region. 17% of pre monsoonal rains, which is spread in the different months of the year (specially in the months of November–December–January) have been explained as due to Norwester affect and rest during monsoons due to Himalayan affect. Heavy rains, supplemented by physiographic/geomorphic features lead to heavy flood. [5]

Demographics

As reported by the Census of India 2011 Manjhaul village has population of 35,905 of which 19,021 are males while 16,884 are females. [6] In Manjhaul village population of children with age 0-6 is 5,950 which makes up 17% of total population of town. Average Sex Ratio of Manjhaul village is 888 which is lower than Bihar state average of 918. Child Sex Ratio for the Majhaul as per census is 865, lower than Bihar average of 935. The literacy rate is 61.70%, with 68.39% male literacy and 54.20% female literacy. [6]

Kanwar Lake Bird Sanctuary

Kanwar Lake Bird Sanctuary or Kabar Taal Lake is Asia's largest freshwater oxbow lake, formed due to meandering of Gandak river, a tributary of Ganga, in the geological past. [7] About 60 migratory birds come from Central Asia in winter and there are around 106 species of resident birds. [8] [9] In 2020, it was declared as a Ramsar site. [10] Internationally noted ornithologist Ali Hussain was born in the village and contributed to the work of the sanctuary. [11]

Jaimangla Garh

Jaimangla Gadh Temple is located near Kabar Taal Lake, and it has a temple of goddess Chandi Mangla Devi. [12]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Kanwar Lake Bird Sanctuary</span> Freshwater oxbow lake in Bihar, India

The Kanwar Taal or Kabar Taal Lake or Kabartal Wetland located in Begusarai district of Bihar, India, is Asia's largest freshwater oxbow lake. It is approximately six times the size of the Bharatpur Sanctuary. In November 2020, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) declared it the first Ramsar site in Bihar. There are a total of 85 Ramsar Sites in India till 2024.
Kanwar jheel, as it is locally called, is located 22 km north-west of Begusarai Town in Manjhaul. It is a residual oxbow lake, formed due to meandering of Burhi Gandak river, a tributary of Ganga, in the geological past. It covers 2,620 hectares of the Indo-Gangetic plains in the northern Bihar State. The Site is one of 18 wetlands within an extensive floodplain complex; it floods during the monsoon season to a depth of 1.5 metres. This absorption of floodwaters is a vital service in Bihar State where 70% of the land is vulnerable to inundation. During the dry season, areas of marshland dry out and are used for agriculture. Significant biodiversity is present, with 165 plant species and 394 animal species recorded, including 221 bird species. The Wetland is an important stopover along the Central Asian Flyway, with 58 migratory waterbirds using it to rest and refuel. It is also a valuable site for fish biodiversity with over 50 species documented. Five critically endangered species inhabit the site, including three vultures – the red-headed vulture, white-rumped vulture and Indian vulture – and two waterbirds, the sociable lapwing and Baer’s pochard. Major threats to the Site include water management activities such as drainage, water abstraction, damming and canalization.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Thol Lake</span> Lake in India

Thol Lake is an artificial lake near Thol village in Kadi in Mehsana District in the Indian state of Gujarat. A fresh water lake surrounded by marshes, it was built as an irrigation tank in 1912. Declared the Thol Bird Sanctuary in 1988, it is a habitat to 150 species of birds, about 60% of them waterbirds. Many migratory birds nest and breed in the lake and its periphery. The two most prominent species of birds recorded in the sanctuary are flamingoes and sarus crane. The sanctuary is also proposed to be declared an Eco-Sensitive Zone, conforming to the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, for which draft notification has been prepared.
