Manjula Chellur (born 5 December 1955) is a former Chief Justice of Bombay High Court. She was the first woman Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court,was the Chief Justice of Kerala High Court and the first female judge of the Karnataka High Court. She demitted her office upon attaining the age of superannuation on 4 December 2017. [1] [2] [3] [4]
Chellur was born in Karnataka. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Allum Sunmangalamma Women's College,Bellary,and went on to earn her law degree from Renukacharya Law College,Bangalore. In 1977 the Supreme Court of India sponsored her on a Gender &Law fellowship to England's University of Warwick. [2] In 2013 Chellur received an honorary doctorate from Karnataka State Women's University. [5]
Chellur became the first female advocate to practice law in Bellary. She worked as a legal advisor,practising both civil and criminal law before the local Bellary courts. [2]
In 1988 she was appointed District and Sessions Judge;she served as the Principal and Sessions Judge for Kolar and Mysore. In addition to these positions she was also the Chief Judge of Court of Small Causes,and Principal Judge of the Family Court at Bangalore. On 21 February 2000 she was named judge of Karnataka High Court. [2] [4]
Chellur served as the President of the Karnataka Judicial Academy from 21 June 2008 to 25 March 2010. She was also the executive chairperson of Karnataka State Legal Service Authority. On 9 November 2011 she was appointed Acting Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court [6] and since 26 September 2012 she has been the Chief Justice of Kerala. [2] [4]
In 2013 the Division Bench of the Kerala High Court,consisting of Chief Justice Chellur and Justice Vinod Chandran,ordered the state government to submit a statement regarding the high-profile rape case against the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha,P. J. Kurien. [7] Also in March 2013,the justices refused the plea of prominent Marxist politician and Leader of the Opposition V. S. Achuthanandan for an early hearing in another investigation into the "Ice Cream Parlour sabotage case",involving an ice cream parlour that was allegedly being used as a front to lure girls and women into prostitution in the 1990s. In a case in 2017 she told doctors protesting against physical assault that if they are so scared of being beaten then they should resign and stay at home. The resident doctors had gone on strike as they demanded safer working environments and wanted to be saved from these assaults. The petitioners were aghast and countered what if judges and lawyers were treated like this if the client's expectations were not met. If the court case went against the accused and the accused or his relatives decided to do the same to the judges and lawyers. [9]

Bookanakere Siddalingappa Yediyurappa,often referred to by his initials BSY,is an Indian politician. He is been serving as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National Parliamentary board committee since 17 August 2022,which is considered the highest office of authority in the party. Hansraj Bhardwaj was an Indian politician who was Governor of Karnataka from 2009 to 2014;he also served as Governor of Kerala from 2012 until 2013. He was a member of the Indian National Congress. He holds the record of having the second longest tenure in Law Ministry since independence,after Ashoke Kumar Sen. He was the minister of state for nine years and a cabinet minister for law and justice for five years. At the end of his five-year term in 2014,Governor of Tamil Nadu,former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Konijeti Rosaiah replaced Bharadwaj as Governor of Karnataka.

The Suryanelli rape case refers to a case of kidnapping and subsequent rape of a 16-year-old school girl from Suryanelli,Kerala,India,in 1996. The girl was allegedly lured with the promise of marriage on 16 January 1996 and kidnapped. She was allegedly raped by 37 of the 42 accused persons,over a period of 40 days. The remaining had abetted the crime. After P.J. Kurien,the then Union Minister and later Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman belonging to UDF led by Congress party,was named,the issue was politicised,due to a then upcoming general election. Several women's rights activists like K. Ajitha and Suja Susan George,and women's organisations,like NFIW and Anweshi,have taken an interest in the case.
Nitte Santosh Hegde is a former judge of the Supreme Court of India,former Solicitor General of India and was Lokayukta (ombudsman) for Karnataka State of India from 2006 to 2011.
Ranjan Gogoi is an Indian former advocate and judge who served as the 46th Chief Justice of India from 2018 to 2019,having previously served as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India from 2012 to 2018. He is currently a Member of the Rajya Sabha,having been nominated by President Ram Nath Kovind on 16 March 2020. Gogoi served as a judge in the Gauhati High Court from 2001 to 2010,and then was transferred as a judge to the Punjab and Haryana High Court from 2010 to 2011 where he later was the Chief Justice from 2011 to 2012. He is also a member of the Committee on External Affairs in the Rajya Sabha.
V. S. Malimath was an Indian jurist,who served as Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court and Karnataka High Court. He also was the Chairman of the Central Administrative Tribunal,and then member of the National Human Rights Commission of India. He headed the Committee on Reform of Criminal Justice System.
Kuttiyil Mathew Joseph is a former judge of the Supreme Court of India;he retired on 16 June 2023. He is former chief justice of the Uttarakhand High Court. Before his appointment as chief justice of the High Court of Uttarakhand on 31 July 2014,he had served as a judge of the Kerala High Court for more than nine years.
Jayaram Jayalalithaa,commonly referred to as Jayalalithaa,was an Indian politician who was the six time Chief Minister of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. She was initially convicted for misusing her office during her tenure of 1991–96. Subramanian Swamy was the chief petitioner. Some of the allegations involved spending on her foster son's lavish marriage in 1996 and her acquisition of properties worth more than ₹66.65 crore,as well as jewellery,cash deposits,investments and a fleet of luxury cars. This was the first case where a ruling chief minister had to step down on account of a court sentence. Ultimately,in May 2015,her conviction was overturned,she was acquitted of all charges,and she then died before the Supreme Court of India reviewed the case in 2017.

Umesh Reddy is a serial rapist and serial killer from India. He confessed to killing 18 women,and was convicted in 9 cases. The police believe that he raped at least 20 women in the states of Karnataka,Maharashtra and Gujarat. They also suspect that several of his crimes have not been reported,because the victims feared social stigma.

Justice Huluvadi G. Ramesh is the second seniormost Judge at the Madras High Court in India since April 2016. Vijaya Kamlesh Tahilramani is a former Indian judge and prosecutor,who last served as the chief justice of the Madras High Court. Previously,as a judge of the Bombay High Court,she notably upheld the conviction of several persons for the rape of a pregnant Muslim woman during the 2002 Gujarat riots,chastising investigative authorities for their inaction in the matter,and also refused parole for those convicted in the 1993 Bombay bombings. She retired in 2019,after refusing to accept a controversial transfer from the Madras High Court to the Meghalaya High Court.
Bengaluru Venkataramiah Nagarathna is a judge of the Supreme Court of India. She served as a judge of the Karnataka High Court from 2008 to 2021. Her father,E. S. Venkataramiah,was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India in 1989.
