Maphalaleni is a constituency (Inkhundla) situated in the Highveld region of Eswatini, within the Hhohho region. It is located near the country's administrative capital, Mbabane. [1] The constituency is defined by its rich cultural heritage, ongoing development projects, and strong community governance.
Geography
The main river in Maphalaleni is the Umkhomati River, which flows into the Maguga Dam, a significant water reservoir in Eswatini. The constituency comprises six chiefdoms:

3. Emcengeni
4. Ensingweni
5. Madlolo

Governance
Maphalaleni is represented in the Eswatini Parliament by Honourable Minister Mabulala Maseko, who is currently serving his third term as a Member of Parliament and his second term as the Minister of Public Works. [3] Maseko hails from the Lubhujini community within the constituency. [4]

- Constituency Councillor: Lusekwane Ndwandwe also from the Maphalaleni chiefdom (umphakatsi).
Education
Education in Maphalaleni has seen significant improvements with the establishment of new schools, reducing the challenges of long-distance travel for students. Notable schools include: [5]

- Emphumelelweni High School
- Luvinjelweni Secondary School.
Previously, Maphalaleni Secondary School was the only high school in the area; it has since been upgraded to Maphalaleni High School.
Health and Sanitation
A new clinic was built to enhance access to healthcare services for residents, reducing the need for long-distance travel. [6]
Clean water and sanitation projects have been implemented to benefit various communities, including Ebulimeni, Lubhujini, Busheleletini, and Mtjopane. Schools and other facilities, such as Ekuvinjelweni High School and Maphalaleni High School, also benefit from these projects. These initiatives have significantly reduced waterborne diseases in the area. [7]

Maphalaleni has an electricity scheme that provides residents with subsidized electricity, aiming to improve the quality of life across the constituency.
Culture
Maphalaleni is renowned for its vibrant cultural traditions, particularly in traditional dance. Schools in the constituency consistently excel in cultural dance competitions, with some students gaining employment or securing school placements in urban areas due to their cultural skills.

Eswatini, formally the Kingdom of Eswatini and also known by its former official name Swaziland and formerly the Kingdom of Swaziland, is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. It is bordered by Mozambique to its northeast and South Africa to its north, west, south, and southeast. At no more than 200 km (120 mi) north to south and 130 km (81 mi) east to west, Eswatini is one of the smallest countries in Africa; despite this, its climate and topography are diverse, ranging from a cool and mountainous highveld to a hot and dry lowveld.
Mbabane is the most populous city in Eswatini, and is one of the two capitals, serving as the executive capital.
Hhohho is a region of Eswatini, located in the north western part of the country. Hhohho was named after the capital of King Mswati II, who expanded the Swazi territory to the north and west, taking in the districts of Barberton, Nelspruit, Carolina and Piet Retief. These areas were later acquired by what was the Province of Transvaal and today they form part of the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. It has an area of 3,625.17 km², a population of 320,651 (2017), and is divided into 14 tinkhundla. The administrative center is the national capital of Mbabane. It borders Lubombo Region on the southeast and Manzini Region in the southwest.
The Parliament of Eswatini is bicameral, consisting of a lower chamber and an upper one. Some of the members of both chambers are elected, while the rest are appointed by the King of Eswatini. Election is by secret ballot in a first-past-the-post system of voting. Members of both chambers serve for five-year terms. All candidates run on a non-partisan basis, as political parties are banned.
The People's United Democratic Movement is the largest opposition party in Eswatini. It is a democratic socialist party. Formed in 1983 at the University of Eswatini, it is led by Mlungisi Makhanya.
Lobamba is a place in Eswatini located in between Eswatini's two main cities, Mbabane and Manzini.
The House of Assembly of Eswatini is the lower chamber of the country's bicameral Parliament. The Assembly may debate and pass bills, although as the country is an absolute monarchy, the role of the legislature is mostly advisory.
In Eswatini, an inkhundla is an administrative subdivision smaller than a district but larger than an umphakatsi. There are 55 tinkhundla in Eswatini: 14 in Hhohho District, 11 in Lubombo District, 16 in Manzini District, and 14 in Shishelweni District. According to the constitution of Eswatini, the government for Eswatini is a democratic, participatory, tinkhundla-based system that emphasizes devolution of state power from central government to tinkhundla areas and individual merit as a basis for election or appointment to public office. The system is non-partisan since the constitution does not recognize political parties, although section 25 of the constitution allows for open freedom of assembly and association. Each inkhundla elects one representative to the House of Assembly of Eswatini, the lower chamber of the bicameral parliament (Libandla). The same trend is applied in local government elections. This governing system was designed by King Sobhuza II with the assistance of political scholars and lawyers. It came to effect in 1978 and was adjusted in the early 1990s.
The Central Bank of Eswatini, is the central bank of Eswatini. It was established in April 1974 and is based in capital Mbabane. According to the bank's website, the bank's mission is to promote monetary stability and foster a stable and sound financial system. Among the bank's responsibilities are managing Eswatini's foreign exchange position and safeguarding the country's foreign reserves of cash. The bank conducts weekly auctions of 91-day Swazi treasury bills, through "primary dealer" Swazi banks. The current governor is Dr. Phil Mnisi.
Education in Eswatini includes pre-school, primary, secondary and high schools, for general education and training (GET), and universities and colleges at tertiary level.
Mbabane East is an inkhundla of Eswatini, located in the Hhohho District. Its population as of the 2007 census was 36,792. It is a suburb located within the city of Mbabane, which serves as the administrative and executive capital of Eswatini. Situated in the Hhohho Region, this area benefits from its proximity to the central business district of Mbabane, making it an important residential and commercial zone. The elevation of Mbabane contributes to a temperate climate, which is generally cooler than other regions in Eswatini.
Kwaluseni is an inkhundla of Eswatini, located in the Manzini District. Its population as of the 2007 census was 41,780. It is divided in two imiphakatsi:
Hosea is an inkhundla of Eswatini, located in the Shiselweni District, with 19,608 people as of 2007. It houses seven chiefdoms, namely Bufaneni, Hhohho emuva, Ondiyaneni, Nsingizini, Lushini,Ludzakeni and Manyiseni under the headship of Chief Bhejisa Lushaba. The current member of parliament 2023-2028 is Sifiso Mabuza, brother to the incarcerated Mduduzi Bacede Mabuza. Mduduzi was arrested in July 2021 for supporting the pro democracy protests in Eswatini. Towards the end of September that year, students from Hosea high school, mobilized themselves for the release of their beloved MP. This led to the then, nationwide school protests from primary schools to tertiary levels, leading to the shut down of most schools across the country.
Ntjanini is a small village set in a valley in the south of Eswatini in the Shiselweni District. The village is situated 120 km from Manzini and 145 km from Mbabane. The closest town to Ntjanini is Nhlangano (60 km), which is the administrative town for the Shiselweni District.
Sibebe Survivor is an annual hike in Mbuluzi, Eswatini, involving a climb to the top of Sibebe, the world's second largest single granite monolith. Initiated by the Rotary Club of Mbabane-Mbuluzi in July 2004, the Sibebe Survivor hike follows a course from Mbuluzi High School to the top of the rock and back.
Lubombo is a region of Eswatini, located in the east of the country. It has an area of 5,849.11 km2 and a population of 212,531 (2017). Its administrative center is Siteki. It borders all three other regions: Hhohho to the north, Manzini to the west, and Shiselweni to the south. It is divided into 11 tinkhundla.
Hluti is a town situated in the Shiselweni region of Eswatini, located beyond Nhlangano and before Lavumisa As of 2005, it has a population of 6,763. It is made up of two constituencies; Shiselweni I and Hosea inkundla. Development has been slow in this town for years, but recently the Eswatini government launched, the Mpakeni water project which will supply water in neighboring homes and the newly built shopping complex.
Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini is the union government created by the constitution of Eswatini where the monarch holds supreme executive, legislative, and judicial powers. The Ngwenyama (lion) is a hereditary leader, rules the country, with the assistance of a council of ministers and a national legislature.
Lady Howard Mabuza is a Swazi politician. She served in the Cabinet of Eswatini as the Minister of Education and Training from 2019 to 2023. As education minister, she advocated for women's education and women's representation in government.
Mduduzi Bacede Mabuza is a Swazi politician and pro-democracy activist. Formerly a member of the House of Assembly of Eswatini, he was arrested during the 2021 protests, and in 2024 was sentenced to 25 years in prison on charges of terrorism, sedition, and murder, in a trial condemned by national and international human rights organisations.
