Marc Gustafson is an American national security official who has held senior positions in the administrations of Presidents Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden including roles on the National Security Council and as head of the White House Situation Room. [3] [4] [5]
Gustafson has held senior national security and foreign policy roles under the administrations of Presidents Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden. [6] Under the Biden administration, he served in a role as the Chief of Intelligence on the National Security Council (NSC) and as the Senior Director of the White House Situation Room. [7] [8] [9] In this capacity, he also acted as the NSC’s representative to the president and frequently traveled with President Biden. [10] [11] [12]
During the Obama and Trump administrations, Gustafson served as the Director and Acting Senior Director for African Affairs at the NSC, where he was responsible for U.S. policy on the African continent. Prior to his roles at the White House, he worked for over 15 years at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), where he was a senior intelligence officer. His work at the CIA focused on regions including the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. [13] [14]
Gustafson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from New York University. [15] He was later awarded a Marshall Scholarship [16] and completed a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree at the University of Oxford.
