Margarula (foaled 15 March 1999) is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In her first eleven races she showed herself to be a tough and consistent stayer, winning three handicap races, but appeared to be some way below top class. On her twelfth start however, she produced a major upset when she defeated a field of highly regarded fillies to win the Irish Oaks at odds of 33/1. Margarula finished sixth in her two subsequent races and was retired at the end of the season. She had some success as a broodmare, producing the Sydney Cup winner Grand Marshal.

Background

Margarula was a bay mare bred in Ireland by the County Kildare-based Airlie Stud. As a yearling in October 2000 the filly was consigned to the Goffs sale and was bought for IR£33,000 by the racehorse trainer and breeder Jim Bolger. [2] During her racing career she was trained by Bolger at Coolcullen, County Carlow and owned by Jackie Bolger in partnership with John Corcoran. She was ridden in most of her races by Kevin Manning.

She was sired by Doyoun who won the 2000 Guineas and finished third in The Derby in 1988 before becoming a successful breeding stallion whose other progeny included Daylami and Kalanisi. [3] Her dam Mild Intrigue showed modest racing ability, winning on her debut but then finishing unplaced in four subsequent starts. [4] As a granddaughter of the American broodmare Natashka (foaled 1963), she was closely related to Questing, Elusive Quality and Dark Lomond. [5]

Racing career

2001: two-year-old season

On her racecourse debut Margarula finished seventh in a maiden race over seven furlongs at the Curragh on 16 September. She then finished third in similar events over one mile at Gowran Park and Thurles Racecourse before running unplaced in a nursery (a handicap for two-year-olds) at Gowran Park on 13 October. On 7 November the filly made her fifth appearance in just over seven weeks when she was assigned a weight of 107 pounds for a nursery at Thurles in which she was ridden by David Moran. Starting at odds of 11/2 in a thirteen-runner field she was among the leaders from the start and kept on well to win by three quarters of a length from the favourite Arkaga who was carrying 131 pounds. 2002: three-year-old season

Margarula began her second season by being matched against older horses and male opposition in a handicap over ten furlongs at Cork Racecourse on 31 March. Carrying 120 pounds she made steady progress in the second half of the race before taking the lead inside the final furlong and winning by a length from the five-year-old gelding Murrayfield. [7] She finished second to Solid Approach in a handicap for three-year-olds at the Curragh on 6 May before being stepped up in distance to contest the Milltown Handicap against older horses over one and a half miles at Leopardstown Racecourse six days later. As she was assigned to carry only 106 pounds the lightweight Moran again came in to take the ride. Starting favourite against eight opponents, Margarula turned into the straight in fourth place before taking the lead a furlong out and winning by a length from the four-year-old gelding American Gothic. [8] Five days later she started favourite for the Mourne Abbey Handicap at Cork but faded in the closing stages and finished eighth of the twelve runners.

On 6 June, Margarula was stepped up in class but dropped in distance for the Listed Victor McAlmont Stakes over nine and a half furlongs at Gowran Park and finished fifth of the fourteen runners, more than eight lengths behind the winner Fionn's Folly. Later that month she was moved into Group 2 class for the Pretty Polly Stakes. After being restrained by Manning at the rear of the field she made steady progress in the straight to finish fourth behind Tarfshi, Wrong Key and Fraulein. Despite three consecutive defeats, Margarula was then elevated to the highest class to contest the Group 1 Irish Oaks at the Curragh on 14 July and started a 33/1 outsider in a twelve-runner field. The Aidan O'Brien-trained Quarter Moon started odds-on favourite after finishing second in both the Irish 1000 Guineas and The Oaks while the other fancied runners included Irresistible Jewel (winner of the Ribblesdale Stakes), Mellow Park (Lupe Stakes, Lancashire Oaks) and Red Rioja (C L Weld Park Stakes). Margarula was settled towards the rear of the field as the O'Brien stable's pacemaker Kournakova made the running but moved up on the inside into fifth place approaching the final turn. Quarter Moon took the lead in the straight but Margarula was close behind and overtook the favourite a furlong from the finish. The two leaders drew well clear of the other fillies in the closing stages and Margarula kept on well to prevail by a length, with a gap of six lengths back to Lady's Secret in third. [9] [10] Jim Bolger commented "I said beforehand that I had been training for 25 years and could do with a pleasant surprise at this stage. Margarula has given it to me today after getting a peach of a ride from Kevin, who saved every inch of ground along the inner". [11]

After her win in the Irish Oaks, Margarula made two more appearances, both against top class male opposition. In the Irish Champion takes over ten furlongs at Leopardstown on 7 September she finished sixth of the seven runners behind Grandera, who won by a short head from Hawk Wing. One week later the filly contested the Irish St Leger over fourteen furlongs at the Curragh and again finished sixth in a race which saw Vinnie Roe record the second of his four wins in the event.

Breeding record

In December 2003, Margarula was put up for auction at Tattersalls and was bought for 825,000 guineas. [12] She entered the ownership of Carwell Equities Ltd and produced at least five winners:

After winning one of her two starts as a juvenile she improved when moved up to longer distances as a three-year-old, winning the Ballysax Stakes on her seasonal debut. Teggiano was an Irish-bred, British-trained thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from July 1999 until July 2000 she won three of her six races. As a two-year-old she was one of the best fillies of her generation in Britain when she won three races including the May Hill Stakes and the Fillies' Mile. After a change of stable she made two appearances in the following year, producing the better of her efforts when finishing second in the Ribblesdale Stakes. She has had some success as a broodmare.

Pleascach Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Pleascach is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse whose wins included the Irish 1000 Guineas and the Yorkshire Oaks. Bred and trained by Jim Bolger she showed promise in two starts as a two-year-old in 2015, finishing fourth in a Group Three race on her debut and then winning a maiden race. In the spring of 2016 she finished second on her first appearance, won the Blue Wind Stakes and then defeated Found in the Irish 1000 Guineas. In summer she was beaten by Curvy in the Ribblesdale Stakes and disappointed in the Pretty Polly Stakes before returning from a lengthy absence to win the Yorkshire Oaks. On her final appearance of the year she finished fourth in a top-class international field for the Irish Champion Stakes.

Lailani is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from October 2000 until October 2001 she won seven of her ten races including Group One/ Grade I races in three countries. After showing little ability in two races as a juvenile she made relentless progress as a three-year-old, winning seven consecutive races including the Irish Oaks in Ireland, the Nassau Stakes in England and the Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes in the United States. After her retirement from racing she had some success as a broodmare.

Trusted Partner was an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed great promise as a two-year-old in 1987 when she won both of her races including the C L Weld Park Stakes and won the Irish 1000 Guineas on her three-year-old debut. She was beaten in her three remaining European starts and had no success when sent to race in America in 1989. After her retirement from racing she became a very successful broodmare.

Give Thanks (horse) British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Give Thanks was a British-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After showing little ability as a juvenile she emerged as a leading performer over middle distances in 1983. She won six of her first seven races including the Lingfield Oaks Trial, Musidora Stakes,Lancashire Oaks and Irish Oaks. She was also placed in the Yorkshire Oaks, Park Hill Stakes and Gallinule Stakes and ended the year rated the best filly of her generation in Ireland. After her retirement from racing she had some success as a broodmare, being the dam of the Falmouth Stakes winner Alshakr, and the grand-dam of Harayir.

Possessive Dancer was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from November 1990 until May 1992 she competed in four countries and won five of her eight races. After winning her only start as a juvenile in 1990, she showed relentless improvement in the first half of the following year, winning two handicap races before taking the Oaks d'Italia and the Irish Oaks. She failed to reproduce her best form in her three subsequent races and was retired from racing in 1992. She had some success as a broodmare.

Ebadiyla was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Bred and owned by the Aga Khan an trained by John Oxx she was unraced as a two-year-old in 1996 but quickly established herself as a very promising filly in the following spring with an emphatic win on her racecourse debut followed by a narrow defeat in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial. After finishing sixth in The Oaks she won the Irish Oaks and ended her season with a six length win in the Prix Royal-Oak. She remained in training as a four-year-old but failed to win in three races although she did finish third in a strong renewal of the Coronation Cup. Eurobird was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. A specialist stayer who was well-suited by soft or heavy ground, she was the third Classic race winner produced by the broodmare Irish Bird. As a three-year-old in 1987 she made steady improvement, winning the Kinderhill Oaks Trial, Blandford Stakes and Irish St Leger by wide margins as well as finishing third in the Irish Oaks. At the end of the year she was rated the best filly in Europe over fourteen furlongs and further. She failed to win as a four-year-old but ran several good races in defeat. She later had considerable success as a broodmare, being the dam of at least ten winners.

Rebelline was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She won six of her eleven races in a racing career which lasted from October 2000 until May 2002. As a juvenile she won on her debut and then finished second to Vinnie Roe in the Eyrefield Stakes. In the following year she won the Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial and the Pretty Polly Stakes as well as finishing third in the Prix de l'Opéra. She reached her peak as a four-year-old in 2002 when she was undefeated in three starts, taking the Gladness Stakes, Mooresbridge Stakes and Tattersalls Gold Cup. After her retirement from racing she had considerable success as a dam of winners.

Eva Luna (IRE) was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. At the age of two in 1994 she was one of the best horses of her generation in Ireland when she won her first five races including the Silver Flash Stakes, Railway Stakes and Phoenix Stakes. Her winning run came to an end when she finished third in the Moyglare Stud Stakes, and in 1993 she failed to recapture her juvenile form. After her retirement from racing she became a broodmare and produced a few minor winners. The last of her recorded offspring was foaled in 2010.

Necklace is a British, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She had her greatest success as a two-year-old in 2003 when she won two of her four races including the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. In the following year failed to win but did finish third in the Beverly D. Stakes and fourth in the Epsom Oaks before being retired from racing with a record of two wins from nine starts in four different counties. She had very little success as a broodmare, producing only one minor winner.

Quarter Moon was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2001 she showed considerable promise, taking the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes on the second of her two starts. In the following year she failed to win but showed top class form to finish second in four Group 1 races: the Irish 1,000 Guineas, the Epsom Oaks, the Irish Oaks and the Nassau Stakes. After retiring from racing at the end of the year she became a successful broodmare whose foals have included the Pretty Polly Stakes winner Diamondsandrubies.

Preseli is an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the best two-year-olds in Ireland in 1999 when she was undefeated in three races including the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. In the following spring she took her winning streak to four when she won the Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial but was beaten in her next three races that year, producing her best subsequent effort when narrowly beaten in the Pretty Polly Stakes. In 2001 she raced in North America, but failed to reproduce her European form. As a broodmare she has produced several minor winners.

Promising Lead is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She did not race until she was three years old in 2017 when she won a maiden race on her debut and went on to win the Upavon Fillies' Stakes before being narrowly beaten in the Group 1 Prix de l'Opéra. In the following year she won the Middleton Stakes and the Pretty Polly Stakes on her only two starts. As a broodmare she produced several minor winners.

Chorist was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was a consistent performer at eight to ten furlongs who improved through her four seasons on the track. After running unplaced on her only start as a two-year-old she won four races including the Upavon Fillies' Stakes as a three-year-old in 2002. She improved in the following year when she took the Hoppings Stakes, Golden Daffodil Stakes and Blandford Stakes. At the age of five in 2004 she reached her peak with wins in the Pipalong Stakes and Pretty Polly Stakes as well as finishing second in the Champion Stakes. After her retirement from racing she became a successful broodmare.
