Matchbox is an upcoming American action-adventure comedy film directed by Sam Hargrave and written by David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper, based on the toy brand of the same name. It stars John Cena, Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Arturo Castro, Teyonah Parris, Randeep Hooda, and Danai Gurira.

Production

In May 2024, Skydance Media and Mattel Films were developing a live-action film based on the toy brand Matchbox. Sam Hargrave had been hired to direct the film, and David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper were penning the screenplay. [1] In September, John Cena joined the cast in the lead role. [2] In November, Jessica Biel joined the cast in an undisclosed role. [3] In December, Sam Richardson, Arturo Castro, and Teyonah Parris joined the cast in undisclosed roles. [4] [5] [6] Randeep Hooda and Danai Gurira would be added to the cast in January 2025. [7] [8]

Filming began in Budapest in January 2025, with production also expected to occur in Slovakia and Los Angeles. [9]

Sam Hargrave is an American stunt coordinator, stuntman, actor, and director. He is best known for his collaborations with the Russo brothers, including being the stunt coordinator for several films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The pair also wrote and produced Hargrave's directorial debut, Extraction (2020). Hargrave also served as Second Unit Director for season two of The Mandalorian.
