Amy Hennig (born August 19, 1964) [1] [2] is an American video game writer and director, formerly for the video game company Naughty Dog. She began her work in the industry on the Nintendo Entertainment System, with her design debut on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System game Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City . She later went to work for Crystal Dynamics, working primarily on the Legacy of Kain series (which she considers her greatest achievement). [3] With Naughty Dog, she worked primarily on the Jak and Daxter and Uncharted series, the latter of which she created.
Hennig graduated from University of California, Berkeley with a bachelor's degree in English literature. [1] She went on to the film school at San Francisco State University, when she was hired as an artist for an Atari game called ElectroCop . [1] Her work on the game made her realize that the video game industry interested her more than the film industry; she dropped out of film school soon after. [1] Hennig has said that her literature degree and film studies have helped her work: "Everything I learned as an undergraduate with English literature and in film school about editing and shots and the language of film has come into play, but in a way I couldn't possibly have planned." [1]
Hennig has worked in the video game industry since the late 1980s. [4] Most of her early jobs involved games on the Nintendo Entertainment System, where she was primarily employed as an artist and animator. [5] Her first job was as a freelance artist for Electrocop , an unreleased Atari 7800 game, based on the Atari Lynx launch title. [1] Afterwards she joined Electronic Arts as an animator and artist, doing work on an unreleased title, Bard's Tale 4, and Desert Strike . She later moved to designing and directing video games. [6]
Two years after being hired at Electronic Arts, Hennig worked as an artist on Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City . [4] However, when the lead designer quit, Hennig landed the job. [1] In the late 1990s, she moved to Crystal Dynamics, [7] where she assisted Silicon Knights in the development of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain . Later, she acted as the director, producer, and writer for Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver . [8] [9] She also directed and wrote Soul Reaver 2 and Legacy of Kain: Defiance . [10]
Hennig departed Crystal Dynamics to act as the creative director for Naughty Dog. [7] She contributed to the Jak and Daxter series before working as the game director for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune , [11] and as head writer and creative director for the Uncharted series. With Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , Hennig led the 150-person team who created the game, as well as acting as writer. [1] After directing and writing for Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and beginning work on Uncharted 4: A Thief's End for the PlayStation 4, Hennig left Naughty Dog in 2014. [12]
In April 2014, Hennig joined Visceral Games with Todd Stashwick to work on Project Ragtag, a Star Wars game. [13] It was reported in October 2017, that EA was shutting down Visceral Games and that their Star Wars project was delayed and moved to another studio to allow for "significant change". A representative of EA told Polygon that EA are "in discussions with Amy about her next move". [14] Hennig announced the following June that she had left EA in January and started a small studio to explore options involving virtual reality games. [15]
In November 2019, Hennig announced she joined Skydance Media to start a new division there, Skydance New Media, for "new story-focused experiences [that] will employ state-of-the-art computer graphics to provide the visual fidelity of television and film, but with an active, lean-in experience that puts the audience in the driver's seat". [16] Stashwick said in May 2021 that he was working with Hennig on an action-adventure game; [17] in September, this was revealed to be Forspoken . Hennig and Stashwick are part of the writing team alongside Gary Whitta and Allison Rymer. [18]
In October 2021, Skydance New Media later announced that it was working with Marvel Entertainment to produce a new action-adventure game that will take place in the Marvel Universe. [19] [20] In September 2022, it was revealed that it was an untitled Captain America and Black Panther game. [21] In March 2024, the game's name was revealed as Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra.
In April 2022, Skydance New Media and Lucasfilm Games announced they are working on a narrative-driven, action-adventure game "featuring an original story in the Star Wars galaxy", with Hennig at the helm. [22]
Hennig believes the term "platformer" is outdated and misused with many modern games, preferring a different term like "traversal" for some. [23] In 2007 she said that video game developers were too obsessed with graphical realism. She predicted that as game technology improves, developers would explore using graphics for creative expression instead of realism. [24]
She often uses supporting characters to highlight personality aspects of other characters through interactions within the script. For example, Chloe Frazer acts as a foil for Nathan Drake, highlighting the darker aspects of his personality and past. [25] With her work in the Uncharted series, Hennig described the writing and plot as on the "bleeding edge" of the genre of cinematic video games. [7] She has won two Writers Guild of America Video Game Writing Awards in addition to several other awards for her work on Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 3. [26] [27]
Hennig has been cited as an example of a successful woman in a historically male-dominated industry, and of how women are taking more important roles within it. [28] Hennig herself says that she has not encountered sexism in the industry, but that differing perspective from men in the industry has helped on some occasions. [1] The UK video magazine Edge named her one of the 100 most influential women in the game industry. [5]
Hennig was given a BAFTA Special Award in June 2016. [29] She received the Lifetime Achievement award at the Game Developers Choice Awards in March 2019. [30]

Kain is a character and the main protagonist and title character of the Legacy of Kain video game series. First introduced in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain in 1996, he was created by Denis Dyack and Silicon Knights, and has appeared in all subsequent Legacy of Kain games under the direction of developer Crystal Dynamics. Between games, he serves as either the central playable character, or as an antagonist, but in all his depictions he has consistently been described as an antihero.
Legacy of Kain is a series of dark fantasy action-adventure video games primarily developed by Crystal Dynamics and formerly published by Eidos Interactive. The first title, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, was created by Silicon Knights in association with Crystal Dynamics, but, after a legal battle, Crystal Dynamics retained the rights to the game's intellectual property, and continued its story with four sequels. To date, five games comprise the series, all initially developed for video game consoles and later ported to Microsoft Windows. Focusing on the eponymous character of Kain, a vampire antihero, each title features action, exploration and puzzle-solving, with some role-playing game elements.
Naughty Dog, LLC is an American first-party video game developer based in Santa Monica, California. Founded by Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin in 1984, the studio was acquired by Sony Computer Entertainment in 2001. Gavin and Rubin produced a sequence of progressively more successful games, including Rings of Power and Way of the Warrior in the early 1990s. The latter game prompted Universal Interactive Studios to sign the duo to a three-title contract and fund the expansion of the company.
Raziel is a fictional character and a main protagonist in the Legacy of Kain video game series. Introduced in 1999 as the lead and playable character of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, he was created by Amy Hennig, Seth Carus and Arnold Ayala of Crystal Dynamics. He reappears as the protagonist of Soul Reaver 2, and returns as a playable character alongside series eponym, Kain, in Legacy of Kain: Defiance, which closes his story arc.
Jade Raymond is a Canadian video game producer, best known for helping create the Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs franchises, as well as building Ubisoft Toronto and Motive Studio. In March 2021, Raymond announced the founding of a new independent development team called Haven Studios, which was later acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment in July 2022, making them a first-party developer for PlayStation Studios.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is a 2009 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3. It is the second game in the Uncharted series. Set two years after Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (2007), the story follows Nathan Drake, Chloe Frazer and Elena Fisher as they search for the Cintamani Stone and Shambhala while battling a militia led by war criminal Zoran Lazarević.
Visceral Games was an American video game developer studio owned by Electronic Arts. The studio is best known for creating and principally developing the Dead Space series, and was also involved in making Tiger Woods PGA Tour games between 1999 and 2006.
Uncharted is an action-adventure video game series and media franchise published by Sony Interactive Entertainment and developed by Naughty Dog. While partially playable for short sections of the first game, Elena also acts as both a sidekick and love interest for Nathan Drake. Emily Rose both provided her voice and did the motion capture work for the character.
Uncharted: Golden Abyss is a 2011 action-adventure game developed by Bend Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment as a launch title for the PlayStation Vita. A spin-off of the Uncharted series, the game was released in Japan in 2011, and in other regions in 2012. Golden Abyss is a prequel to the series, taking place before the events of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. The story revolves around adventurer-treasure hunter Nathan Drake as he becomes involved in a search for the lost city of Quivira and is aided by fellow treasure hunter Marisa Chase. Gameplay combines action-adventure with platforming elements, with players solving puzzles and fighting enemies using cover-based third-person shooting.
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is a 2016 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It is the fourth main entry in the Uncharted series. Set several years after the events of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, players control Nathan Drake, a former treasure hunter coaxed out of retirement by his presumed-dead brother Samuel. With Nathan's longtime partner, Victor Sullivan, they search for clues to the location of Henry Avery's long-lost treasure. A Thief's End is played from a third-person perspective, and incorporates platformer elements. Players solve puzzles and use firearms, melee combat, and stealth to combat enemies. In the online multiplayer mode, up to ten players engage in co-operative and competitive modes.
Neil Druckmann is an Israeli–American writer, creative director, designer, and programmer. He is the studio head and head of creative of the video game developer Naughty Dog, and is best known for his work on the game franchises Uncharted and The Last of Us, having co-created the latter.
Bruce Straley is an American game director, artist, designer, and studio director. He previously worked for the video game developer Naughty Dog, known for his work on the video games The Last of Us and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. Straley's first video game work was as an artist at Western Technologies Inc, where he worked on the Menacer six-game cartridge (1992) and X-Men (1993). Following this, he formed a company, Pacific Softscape, where he worked as a designer on Generations Lost (1994). After the company disbanded, Straley was eventually hired at Crystal Dynamics, where he worked as a designer on Gex: Enter the Gecko (1998) and was initially game director for Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko (1999); he left the company partway through development of the latter.
Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun is a cancelled action-adventure video game that was in development by Climax Studios for Square Enix Europe, with an accompanying multiplayer component developed separately by Psyonix. Conceived as the sixth entry in the Legacy of Kain series, Dead Sun entered production for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Xbox 360. It was cancelled in 2012 after three years of development. Square Enix Europe and Psyonix salvaged the planned multiplayer mode, which they reconceptualized as Nosgoth, a standalone free-to-play title.
Project Ragtag was a codename for an untitled action-adventure third-person shooter video game set within the Star Wars universe. It had been under development by Visceral Games since around 2013 and set to be published by Electronic Arts before its cancellation in 2017. The project was led by the creator of the Uncharted series, Amy Hennig. It was to be a linear game about a large-scale heist, taking place in the wake of events of Star Wars IV: A New Hope. EA Vancouver and Motive Studio had assisted the game's development. Visceral Games was shut down by Electronic Arts on October 17, 2017, and the game's development was rebooted by EA Vancouver to become an open world title. Despite this, the project was reportedly cancelled.
Emilia Schatz is an American video game designer best known for her work at Naughty Dog. She studied computer science at the University of North Texas, where she later worked before searching for work in the video game industry. She was hired at Terminal Reality, where she worked as a level scripter on Re-Mission, as a level designer on BlowOut and BloodRayne 2, and as a senior game designer on Ghostbusters: The Video Game. She was hired at Naughty Dog in 2009, and began working early in development on Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, for which she designed several levels. She assisted with the development of The Last of Us.
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is an upcoming action-adventure video game developed by Skydance New Media and published by Plaion. Its story is inspired by the 2010 Marvel Comics limited series Captain America / Black Panther: Flags of Our Fathers, Set in Occupied Paris during World War II, and involves American super soldier Steve Rogers forming an uneasy alliance with Azzuri, the king of Wakanda, as they attempt to prevent the rise of the terrorist organization Hydra.

I'm actually really proud of that game still; I mean if somebody said ... what is the best game you've designed, I'd probably say Soul Reaver ... I felt like it was the purest expression of story and gameplay being the same thing.
