PixelOpus was an American video game developer based in San Mateo, California, It was established in 2014 as a first-party developer for Sony Interactive Entertainment. The studio's debut game, Entwined , was released the same year. [1] Their second and ultimately last game, Concrete Genie , was announced on October 30, 2017 and released on October 8, 2019. [2] [3]

History

In 2012, SIE's Foster City Studio (now known as San Mateo Studio) product development group decided to work with small development teams following the success of Journey (2012) developed by the small studio, Thatgamecompany, and published by Santa Monica Studio. [5] Soon after, SIE's Foster City sponsored a game development program for students at Carnegie Mellon University. [5] They provided PlayStation Vitas for students to experiment with; Foster City were jubilant with students' ability in to rapidly prototype game ideas. [5] In July 2013, Foster City offered six students from the development program at the Carnegie Mellon University and three students from San Jose State University. [5] Additionally, a pair of industry veterans were hired to lead the 9-man team, forming PixelOpus. [5] Dominic Robilliard is the creative director at PixelOpus. [5]

On May 5, 2023, PixelOpus announced through their Twitter that the studio would be shutting down. [6] In a statement to IGN, Sony confirmed that it would be closing the studio on June 2, 2023, as it "regularly evaluates its portfolio and the status of studio projects to ensure they meet the organization’s short and long-term strategic objectives. As part of a recent review process, it has been decided that PixelOpus will close on June 2". [7]

<i>Entwined</i> (video game) 2014 rhythm game

Entwined is a 2014 rhythm video game developed by Pixelopus and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. It was ported to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in July 2014. The game was announced at Sony's E3 media briefing on June 9, 2014 and was released worldwide on the PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 4 on the same day. The PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita version were released approximately a month later, and since Entwined is a cross-buy title, these two versions are available at no extra cost for anyone who has purchased the PlayStation 4 version. Versions for Android and iOS titled Entwined Challenge, which consist of a challenge mode with a new scoring system and unlockables were released in 2014 by Sony.

<i>The Tomorrow Children</i> 2016 video game

The Tomorrow Children is an adventure video game developed by Q-Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. The game was released as an early access title on September 6, 2016 as The Tomorrow Children: Founder's Pack, and was fully released on October 25, 2016, but was shut down by Sony in 2017. Q-Games later purchased the IP and released the game on September 6, 2022 as The Tomorrow Children: Phoenix Edition. with enhancements for playing the game on backwards compatibility on PlayStation 5.

<i>Concrete Genie</i> 2019 action-adventure game

Concrete Genie is an action-adventure video game developed by Pixelopus and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. The game was announced at Sony's PlayStation Media Showcase at Paris Games Week 2017 on October 30, 2017, and was released on October 8, 2019. It received generally favourable reviews from critics. The game is also the final game released by Pixelopus before their closure in June 2023.

Marvel's Spider-Man is a series of superhero action-adventure video games developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) for PlayStation consoles and Windows. Based on characters appearing in Marvel Comics publications, the games are inspired by the long-running comic book lore, while additionally deriving from various adaptations in other media. The series principally follows protagonists Peter Parker and Miles Morales who fight crime in New York City as dual bearers of the eponymous superhero persona while dealing with the complications of their civilian lives.

Connie Booth is an American business executive who had served as vice-president of Product Development at Sony Interactive Entertainment. She had been an advocate of many of SIE's first-party franchises starting with Crash Bandicoot. She was inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame.
