Sir John Berry Hobbs was an English professional cricketer who played for Surrey from 1905 to 1934 and for England in 61 Test matches between 1908 and 1930. Known as "The Master",he is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket. He is the leading run-scorer and century-maker in first-class cricket,with 61,760 runs and 199 centuries. A right-handed batsman and an occasional right-arm medium pace bowler,Hobbs also excelled as a fielder,particularly in the position of cover point. Hobbs was named as one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Century alongside Sir Donald Bradman,Sir Garfield Sobers,Shane Warne,and Sir Viv Richards.
Sir Francis Stanley Jackson,known as the Honourable Stanley Jackson during his playing career,was an English cricketer,soldier and Conservative Party politician. He played in 20 Test matches for the England cricket team between 1893 and 1905.
Norman Walter Dransfield Yardley was an English cricketer who played for Cambridge University,Yorkshire County Cricket Club and England,as a right-handed batsman and occasional bowler. An amateur,he captained Yorkshire from 1948 to 1955 and England on fourteen occasions between 1947 and 1950,winning four Tests,losing seven and drawing three. Yardley was named Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1948,and in his obituary in Wisden Cricketers' Almanack he was described as Yorkshire's finest amateur since Stanley Jackson.
Wilfred Rhodes was an English professional cricketer who played 58 Test matches for England between 1899 and 1930. In Tests,Rhodes took 127 wickets and scored 2,325 runs,becoming the first Englishman to complete the double of 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in Test matches. He holds the world records both for the most appearances made in first-class cricket,and for the most wickets taken (4,204). He completed the double of 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in an English cricket season a record 16 times. Rhodes played for Yorkshire and England into his fifties,and in his final Test in 1930 was,at 52 years and 165 days,the oldest player who has appeared in a Test match.
Basil Arthur Firebrace Grieve was an English amateur cricketer who played in two retrospectively-recognised Test matches for England in 1899. Those were his only first-class appearances and he was never a member of any county team. He was born in Kilburn,Middlesex,and died in Eastbourne,Sussex.
Edgar Thomas Killick was an English cricketer who played in two Tests in 1929. He became an ordained priest in his later life.
Herbert Tremenheere Hewett was an English amateur first-class cricketer who played for Somerset,captaining the county from 1889 to 1893,as well as Oxford University and the Marylebone Cricket Club. A battling left-handed opening batsman,Hewett could post a large score in a short time against even the best bowlers. Capable of hitting the ball powerfully,he combined an excellent eye with an unorthodox style to be regarded at his peak as one of England's finest batsmen.
Francis Marchant,known as Frank Marchant,was an English amateur cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman,an occasional wicket-keeper and the captain of Kent County Cricket Club from 1890 to 1897.
The Eton v Harrow cricket match is an annual match between public school rivals Eton College and Harrow School. It is one of the longest-running annual sporting fixtures in the world and is the last annual school cricket match still to be played at Lord's. In February 2022,the MCC announced that from 2023 onwards the fixture would no longer be held at the ground. It would be replaced by the finals of boys’and girls’schools competitions,as stated by MCC to be more inclusive. However,in September,2022,following opposition from a section of its membership,the club decided that the match would be held at Lord's in 2023 to allow time for further consultation. In March,2023 it was announced that the fixture would continue to be played at Lord's until at least 2027,following which there would be a review and a possible vote in 2028 on whether the match should remain at Lord's.
Guy Fife Earle was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Surrey and Somerset for 20 years before and after the First World War. He also played in India,Sri Lanka,Australia and New Zealand as a member of official Marylebone Cricket Club touring teams,though he did not play Test cricket.
Robert St Leger Fowler was an Irish first-class cricketer,often regarded as the best Irish cricketer not to have represented Ireland itself. An all-rounder who batted right-handed and bowled off spin,he is perhaps best known for his outstanding all-round performance as captain of Eton College in the match against Harrow in 1910,the match commonly referred to as Fowler's match. After serving in the First World War with the 17th Lancers,during the course of which he was awarded the Military Cross,Fowler played first-class cricket after the war mostly for the British Army cricket team,until his death from leukemia in 1925.
Anthony George Pelham played first-class cricket for Sussex,Cambridge University and Somerset between 1930 and 1934. He was born at Minehead,Somerset and died at Dorking,Surrey.
Bernard James Tindal Bosanquet was an English cricketer best known for inventing the googly,a delivery designed to deceive the batsman. When bowled,it appears to be a leg break,but after pitching the ball turns in the opposite direction to that which is expected,behaving as an off break instead. Bosanquet,who played first-class cricket for Middlesex between 1898 and 1919,appeared in seven Test matches for England as an all-rounder. He was chosen as a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1905.
Robert John Morris was a Welsh cricketer. He played for Cambridge University and Kent County Cricket Club,making a total of 22 appearances in first-class cricket matches between 1949 and 1951.
Eric William Mann was an English cricketer and philatelist who signed the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 1947. He was President of the Royal Philatelic Society London between 1946 and 1949. Mann was an expert on the stamps of Natal and Tasmania.
Anthony Sackville Lawrence was an English first-class cricketer and British Army officer. After attending the University of Cambridge,where he played first-class cricket for Cambridge University Cricket Club,Lawrence served with the Coldstream Guards from 1933 until his death in 1939. During his military service he also represented the British Army cricket team in first-class cricket.
Charles Howard Eyre was an English first-class cricketer,educator and British Army officer.
Joseph Edward Alfred Greatorex was an English first-class cricketer and architect.
John Reunert was a South African first-class cricketer.
