Matthew Stephen Klimow [2] [3] (born June 10,1952) [4] is an American diplomat who served as the United States Ambassador to Turkmenistan. On August 31,2020,Klimow assumed office as the acting Inspector General of the Department of State and left on December 11. [5]
Born in the state of New York,Klimow earned his Bachelor of Science at the United States Military Academy in 1974 and a Master of Arts from Webster University in St. Louis,Missouri,in 1982. He received a Masters of Military Art and Science from the School of Advanced Military Studies at the United States Army Command and General Staff College in 1989 with a thesis entitled Surrender - a soldier's legal,ethical,and moral obligations;with Philippine case study. Klimow served as a United States Army officer from 1974 to 2003,retiring with the rank of colonel. His military assignments included from 2002 to 2003,serving as a Special Advisor to the Vice President of the United States and Executive Assistant to the Chairman from 2001 to 2002 and the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2001 to 2000. He also served as a Combat Task Force Operations Officer during Operation Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait from 1990 to 1991, [6] for which he was awarded the Silver Star Medal. [3] [8] Other assignments include Brigade Commander in the 18th Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg,North Carolina,from 1998 to 2000,Military Advisor to the Secretary of State and Special Assistant,Office of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1995 to 1998 and Visiting Defense Fellow at the Center for International Relations,Queen's University,Canada from 1994 to 1995. From 2012 to 2015,Klimow served as a Deputy Assistant Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Brussels,Belgium. From 2018 to 2019,he served as Senior Advisor in the Office of the Under Secretary for Management at the United States Department of State. [6] He served as Senior Advisor in the Bureau of the Director General and Human Resources and in the Office of Overseas Employment from 2015 to 2018. He also served as the Executive Director of the Bureau of Administration and Bureau of Information Resource Management from 2010 to 2012 and as Director of Language Services from 2008 to 2010,and Executive Director of the Bureau of Consular Affairs from 2003 to 2008 at the State Department [9]
On March 18,2019,President Donald Trump announced his intent to nominate Klimow as the next United States Ambassador to Turkmenistan. On March 26,2019,his nomination was sent to the United States Senate. [10] On May 23,2019,his nomination was confirmed by the Senate by voice vote. [11] [12] He was sworn in on June 13,2019,and presented his credentials to President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow in Ashgabat on June 26,2019. [13]
On August 31,2020,Secretary of State Mike Pompeo appointed Klimow to serve as acting inspector general of the State Department. He was expected to serve through the end of the year but resigned abruptly effective Friday,December 11. [5] [14] He returned to his post in Turkmenistan and completed his tour of duty there in July 6,2024. [15]
Klimow speaks French. [6] He is married to retired Major Edie Gunnels and they have a son. [8]
David Michael Satterfield is an American diplomat and ambassador,who has served extensively in the Middle East,including the Persian Gulf area,Lebanon,and Iraq. He later served as a senior advisor on Iraq for Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and was director general of the Multinational Force and Observers,the peacekeeping force for the Sinai Peninsula from June 2009 until August 2017. He was chargéd'affaires to Egypt from August 2013 to January 2014 and was subsequently Special Advisor to the Secretary of State for Libya. From September 2017 to June 2019 he served as the acting assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs,and was confirmed as U.S. ambassador to Turkey on June 27,2019.
Tracey Ann Jacobson is an American diplomat and a former United States ambassador to Turkmenistan,Tajikistan,Kosovo and Ethiopia. She served as the Acting Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs from January 2017 through October 2017. She retired then returned to active duty in 2021 as the State Department's Director of the Afghanistan Task Force,and then as Chargéd’Affaires,ad interim,at the Embassy in Addis Ababa,Ethiopia. In January 2024,she was nominated by President Joe Biden to serve as the United States ambassador to Iraq.
Francis Joseph Ricciardone Jr. is a former President of the American University in Cairo. Ambassador Ricciardone was the United States ambassador to Turkey between 2011 and 2014. Previously he was Deputy Ambassador at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul,Afghanistan. He was also on leave from the U.S. Department of State as a guest scholar at the U.S. Institute of Peace. He has served as U.S. Ambassador to the Arab Republic of Egypt (2005–2008),the Republic of the Philippines and the Republic of Palau (2002–2005). As a career member of the Senior Foreign Service,he received U.S. government and other organization awards for his work in foreign policy and program management,political reporting and analysis,and peacekeeping.
Philip Thomas Reeker is an American diplomat and career foreign service officer with the Department of State who currently serves as the senior advisor for Caucasus negotiations. He was previously Chargéd'affaires of the United States mission to the United Kingdom from 2021 to 2022 and acting assistant secretary of state in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs from 2019 to 2021.

In April and May 2020,United States President Donald Trump dismissed the inspectors general (IGs) of five cabinet departments in the space of six weeks. The inspectors general removed were Michael K. Atkinson,Intelligence,on April 3;Glenn Fine (acting),Defense,April 7;Christi Grimm (acting),Health and Human Services,May 1;Mitch Behm (acting),Transportation,May 15;and Steve Linick,State,May 15. In four of the cases the announcement was made late on a Friday night in a classic Friday news dump. In several cases the fired IGs had taken an action which Trump disliked,so that the dismissals were widely described as retaliation. In two other cases,questions were raised about whether the dismissals related to ongoing IG investigations into the conduct of the cabinet secretary in charge of that department. The cumulative firings were often described as a "purge" or as a "war on watchdogs".

The format is used to discuss regional issues such as the war in Afghanistan,the Syrian civil war,the War on terror,combatting drug and human trafficking,economic issues regarding trade relations,job growth in the region,and combatting environmental issues.
