Matthew Opoku Prempeh (born 23 May 1968) is a Ghanaian dentist and politician. He is the vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party for the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections. [1] He is the immediate past Member of Parliament for the Manhyia South Constituency in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. He is a former Minister of Education. [2] He is popularly known as NAPO. Matthew Opoku Prempeh was born on 23 May 1968 in Ashanti New Town,a suburb of Kumasi,and hails from Pakyi No. 2 in the Ashanti Region. [10] Born to Oheneba Kwame Kyeretwie and Madam Elizabeth Akosua Nyarko,NAPO’s father was one of the many sons of the 14th Asantehene,Otumfuo Agyemang Prempeh II. [11]
He started his basic education at KNUST Primary and continued to Prempeh College in Kumasi,Ashanti Region of Ghana,for his middle school education. [12]
He studied Human Biology and Medicine at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and completed his MB CHB in 1994. He continued with post-graduate studies in MSc. Clinical Epidemiology at the Netherlands Institute of Health Sciences in 1998 [13] and at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University where he studied Leadership and Government(certificate course). [14] [15] In 2002,he pursued postgraduate training in surgery in the UK (MRCS).
Prior to entering parliament,Prempeh served as CEO of Keyedmap Security Services Limited from 2004 to 2009. [10] He is also a medical doctor [16] and served as a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of the United Kingdom from 1999 to 2003. [17]
As a Ghanaian parliamentarian,he represents Manhyia South in Kumasi,formerly representing Manhyia. [14] He was first elected to parliament in 2008 and is a member of the New Patriotic Party. [10] In 2016,he was re-elected with 35,958 votes,or 87.17% of the votes cast in the district. [18] He was a member of the health committee and the appointments committee. Prempeh contested the 2020 Ghanaian general election as a parliamentary candidate for the Manhyia South constituency under the banner of the New Patriotic Party and won by a large margin. [19]
He was appointed by President Nana Akufo-Addo on 10 January 2017 to serve as Minister for Education in Ghana. [14] He served in that role for 4 years until 6 January 2021 when the tenure of the president and his ministers ended.
In May 2017,President Nana Akufo-Addo named Prempeh as one of the nineteen ministers who would form his cabinet. [20] The names of the 19 ministers were submitted to the Parliament of Ghana and announced by the former Speaker of the House,Mike Ocquaye. [20] As a Cabinet minister,Prempeh was part of the inner circle of the president and was to aid in key decision-making activities in the country. [20]
Prempeh also contributed to the educational sector of Ghana as a Minister of Education,such as improving the infrastructure,promoting vocational and technical education (TVET),and leading the government's flagship programme ''FREE SHS''. [21] [22]
In 2021,the President of Ghana,Nana Akuffo-Addo,after being re-elected as President,named Dr. Mattew Opoku Prempeh as Minister of Energy. [23] [24] He had previously served as the Minister of Education for President Nana Akuffo-Addo's first term. [14]
Prempeh is a member of the Defense and Interior Committee and also of the Appointments Committee. [10]
In May 2021,the University of Education Winneba conferred on him an Honorary Doctorate Degree. [25]
In July 2021,the University of Professional Studies also awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. [25]
As a member of the Parliament of Ghana,he represents Manhyia South in Kumasi,formerly representing Manhyia. [26]
The University of Cape Coast is the latest institution to recognize Dr. Prempeh’s contributions to the development of Ghana and his immense service to the University of Cape Coast,Ghana. [25] [27]
In May 2022,a group by the name of Friends of NAPO presented some educational materials to schools in the Manhyia South Constituency to mark his 54th birthday. [28]
Prempeh College named a dormitory block after him on 17 June 2023. [29]
Ahead of the 2024 General Elections,Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,who was the incumbent Vice President of Ghana and elected Flag bearer to contest for Presidency on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party,presented Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his preferred choice of running mate,subject to clearance from the party hierachy. Osei Tutu II is the 16th Asantehene,enstooled on 26 April 1999. By name,Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is in direct succession to the 17th-century founder of the Ashanti Empire,Otumfuo Osei Tutu I. He is also the Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. A Freemason,Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has served as the Grand Patron of the Grand Lodge of Ghana,the Sword Bearer of the United Grand Lodge of England and the Grand Patron of the Grand Lodge of Liberia.
The Ashanti Region is located in the southern part of Ghana and is the third largest of 16 administrative regions,occupying a total land surface of 24,389 km2 (9,417 sq mi) and making up 10.2 percent of the total land area of Ghana. It is the most populated region in Ghana,with a population of 5,440,463 according to the 2021 census,accounting for around one-fifth of Ghana's total population. The Ashanti Region is known for its gold bar and cocoa production. The largest city and capital of Ashanti is Kumasi.
Prempeh College is a public secondary boarding school for boys located in Kumasi,the capital city of the Ashanti Region,Ghana. The school was founded in 1949 by the Asanteman traditional authority,the British Colonial Government,the Methodist Church Ghana and the Presbyterian Church of Ghana. The school is named after the King of Ashanti (Asantehene),Sir Osei Tutu Agyeman Prempeh II,who donated the land on which the school was built,and was modeled on Eton College in England.
Kwame Addo-Kufuor is a Ghanaian politician and physician. Addo-Kufuor was a member of parliament for Manhyia,and from 2001 to 2007,he was the Minister for Defence under President John Kufuor,his brother. Between June 2008 and 2009,he was the Minister for Interior.
Otumfuo Opoku Ware II was the 15th Asantehene. He succeeded his uncle Osei Tutu Agyeman Prempeh II on 27 July 1970. He ruled for 29 years until his death in February 1999. He was succeeded by Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II.
Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang is a Ghanaian academic and politician who served as Minister for Education from February 2013 to January 2017. She is a full professor of literature. She served as the first female Vice-Chancellor of a state university in Ghana when she took over as Vice-Chancellor of University of Cape Coast. She currently serves as the Chancellor of the Women's University in Africa.

The Manhyia Palace is the seat of the Asantehene,as well as his official residence. It is located at Kumasi,the capital of the Ashanti Region. The first palace is now a museum. Otumfuor Opoku Ware II built the new palace,which is close to the old one and is used by the current Asantehene,Otumfuor Osei Tutu II.

The Government of Ghana initially responded to the virus through a nationwide disinfection and fumigation exercise which began in April 2020. In order to curb the spread of the virus,the government enforced lockdowns,aggressive contact tracing,public bans and social measures such as encouraging the wearing of face masks. By April,it began the gradual reopening of the country;lifting all lockdowns while maintaining protocols such as social distancing. Throughout the pandemic,the government partnered with the private sector in order to roll out economic reliefs and recovery programs as a result of the impact of the pandemic on Ghana's economy.
