Max Bullough (born February 11, 1992) is an American football coach and former linebacker who is the linebackers coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He played college football at Michigan State. He signed with the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL) as an undrafted free agent in 2014.
Bullough was selected to the MaxPreps All-American second-team. [1] He was ranked 14th best linebacker prospect by SuperPrep and was ranked as the 17th best linebacker by Phil Steele. [1] He was ranked as Michigan's Top 10 seniors by the Detroit Free Press. [1] He was selected as the Division 7 Player of the Year by The Associated Press. [1] He received the Ron Holland Scholar-Athlete Award. [1] He was ranked as nation's 5th best middle linebacker prospect by Scout.com and ranked the 11th best linebacker prospect by Max Emfinger. [1]
Bullough was selected to ESPN.com's Big Ten All-Freshman Team before the season. [1] He finished the season with 23 Tackles, half sack and an Interception. [1]
Bullough was selected to the Second-team All-Big Ten in his sophomore season. He was selected to the CollegeFootballNews.com All-Sophomore second-team following the season. [2] He was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District V Team and was named to the Academic All-Big Ten. [1]
In 2012, Bullough was selected to the First-team All-Big Ten by coaches. He also was named to the first-team All-Big Ten by Phil Steele and second-team ESPN.com All-Big Ten. He was named an honorable mention All-American by Pro Football Weekly. [3] [4]
In 2013 as a senior, he was named team captain for the second consecutive year and was selected to the first-team All-Big Ten by coaches. He was selected to the NFF Scholar-Athlete of the Year and to the All-America third-team. Bullough finished his last year with 76 tackles, 9.5 for loss [5]
Bullough was suspended for the 2014 Rose Bowl by head coach Mark Dantonio following the 2013 regular season for a violation of team rules. His last game for the Spartans was the 2013 Big Ten Championship when Michigan State beat #2 and undefeated Ohio State to win the Big Ten Championship and a Rose Bowl berth. The Spartans (a 4.5-point underdog) ended up winning the 100th Rose Bowl over Stanford 24-20, capping off one of the best seasons in Michigan State football history. [6]
On May 16, 2014, Bullough signed with the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent. [7] After being cut on August 30, 2014, the Houston Texans signed Max Bullough to their practice squad on September 1, 2014, after he went unclaimed. [8] On November 30, 2014, Bullough made his NFL debut against the Tennessee Titans. [9] In the 2015 season, Bullough was promoted to the active roster along with former Michigan State teammate safety Kurtis Drummond. The Texans made Bullough a starter at linebacker for their 2015 game against the Titans.
On May 4, 2017, Bullough was suspended for the first four games of the 2017 season for violating the NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances. [10] On June 2, 2017, he was released by the Texans. [11]
On January 11, 2018, Bullough signed a reserve/future contract with the Cleveland Browns. [12] He was waived by the Browns on April 12, 2018. [13]
Bullough joined the staff at Cincinnati as a graduate assistant in 2019. [14]
In 2020, Bullough joined the Alabama Crimson Tide football staff as a graduate assistant where he would win the national championship. [15] [16]
Bullough's parents are Shane and LeeAnn Bullough. [1] His father Shane was a linebacker at Michigan State from 1983–1986. He has two younger brothers, Riley and Byron, and a younger sister, Holly. Riley has played in the NFL for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans, while Byron also played for the Spartans (2016-2018). Holly ran track and cross country at Michigan State. [17]
Bullough married fiancé Bailee in Traverse City on July 2, 2016; [18] they had been engaged since Christmas Eve in 2015. [1]

Henry Charles Bullough was an American football player and coach. He played college football at Michigan State and graduated in 1954. Bullough was a starting guard for the Spartans team that won the 1954 Rose Bowl. He was selected by the Green Bay Packers with the 53rd pick in the fifth round of the 1955 NFL Draft.
Hugh Duffy Daugherty was an American football player and coach. He served as the head coach at Michigan State University from 1954 to 1972, compiling a record of 109–69–5. His 1965 and 1966 teams won national championships. Daugherty's tenure of 19 seasons at the helm of the Michigan State Spartans football team is the longest of any head coach in the program's history. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1984.

Percy Lee Snow is an American former football linebacker. He played college football for the Michigan State Spartans from 1986 to 1989. As a senior, he was a consensus All-American and won both the Butkus Award and the Lombardi Award. He was a first-round draft pick of the Kansas City Chiefs and played three seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2013.
Mark Snyder is an American football coach. He previously was the defensive line and linebackers coach for the Orlando Guardians of the XFL linebackers coach for the Houston Gamblers of the United States Football League (USFL). Snyder served as the head football coach at Marshall University from 2005 to 2009 after a four-year tenure as defensive coordinator at Ohio State University.
Reginald Wayne Herring is an American football coach and former player and most recently the linebackers coach for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL). A former linebacker at Florida State University, he began his coaching career in 1981. He has now coached for 36 years across college and the NFL. Herring arrived in Denver to coach linebackers in 2015 after previous stops in the league with Chicago (2014), Houston and Dallas (2008–10). Herring has coached nine linebackers who have made Pro Bowl appearances during their careers, including outside linebackers DeMarcus Ware (9), Mario Williams (4), and Connor Barwin (1), and inside linebackers Zach Thomas (7), Keith Brooking (5), Lance Briggs (7), Brian Cushing (1), Sean Lee (2) and DeMeco Ryans (2). Herring also served as the interim head football coach for the University of Arkansas in the 2008 Cotton Bowl Classic.
Brandon David Fields is an American former professional football player who was a punter for nine seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Michigan State Spartans, earning consensus All-American honors. He was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2007 NFL draft. He also played for the New Orleans Saints.

Chuck Bullough is an American football coach and is currently a senior defensive analyst at LSU. He was previously the defensive ends coach at Michigan State University. He formerly coached at Eastern Michigan. He is also a former defensive coordinator with the Syracuse Orange of the Atlantic Coast Conference before being let go along with the rest of Scott Shafer's staff. He previously served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the UCLA Bruins under head coach Rick Neuheisel. Promoted from linebackers coach in January 2009, Bullough succeeded DeWayne Walker, who was hired as the head coach of the New Mexico State Aggies.
Gregory M. Jones II is an American former professional football linebacker who played in the National Football League (NFL) and Canadian Football League (CFL). He played college football for the Michigan State Spartans, and was a two-time All-American selection. He was selected by the New York Giants in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL draft, and won the Super Bowl XLVI with them. He was also a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans of the NFL, the Toronto Argonauts and Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL, and the Las Vegas Locomotives of the United Football League (UFL).

Joel Heath is a former American football defensive end. He was a three-year starter at Mount Healthy High School in Mount Healthy, Ohio and earned First-team All-State honors twice. He was also named the Associated Press All-Ohio Division II Co-Defensive Player of the Year his senior season in 2010. Heath played college football at Michigan State, where he was a three-year letterman. He was named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten Conference his senior year in 2015. He played in 39 games during his college career, recording 60 tackles, 4.5 sacks, two pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Heath played for the Houston Texans from 2016 to 2019, and was a member of the Denver Broncos in 2020 and the Detroit Lions in 2021.
Riley Bullough is a former American football linebacker. He played college football at Michigan State, and was signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent in 2017.
Chase Camden Winovich is a former American football defensive end who played in the National Football League (NFL) for five seasons. He played college football at the University of Michigan. He was a two-time All-Big Ten Conference selection, and received All-American honors in 2018. He was drafted by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Winovich spent his first three seasons with the Patriots, also playing for the Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans and Miami Dolphins.
Mike Tressel is an American football coach who is currently the defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach for the Wisconsin Badgers. Tressel, the nephew of former Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel, joined the University of Cincinnati's football coaching staff under Mark Dantonio in 2004. Tressel followed Dantonio to Michigan State when he was hired there in December 2006. He was named the acting head coach when Dantonio announced his retirement in February 2020. Tressel was one of two Dantonio assistants retained by Dantonio's successor, Mel Tucker.
