"Me and My Guitar" is a song by American rapper and singer A Boogie wit da Hoodie. The song was released through Atlantic Records and his record label Highbridge alongside his third studio album, Artist 2.0 , as the third track from the album, on February 14, 2020. He wrote the song with its producers, Andrew Watt and Louis Bell. The release date of the song and album are significant for three reasons: it had a Valentine's Day arrival, he released the first installment of Artist (his debut mixtape) on the same day in 2016, and it was the 3rd birthday of his firstborn daughter, Melody Valentine Dubose.

Background and composition

The song is a "plucky" emo rap song with "the pleading plucks of guitar and the creaking vocals". A Boogie wit da Hoodie delivers lines that discuss "snitching and loyalty". The song "doesn't overstay its welcome". [1] He also reminisces about past relationships that have left him heartbroken.

A Boogie wit da Hoodie originally planned to have late fellow rapper and singer Juice Wrld featured on "Me and My Guitar" and the guitar loop was made in thought of the artist. The two had previously worked on A Boogie's song from his second studio album, Hoodie SZN (2018). [2] In an interview with Brandon "Jinx Jenkins, A Boogie said that he got in contact with Juice Wrld's manager and fellow rapper Lil Bibby, in which he thought it would have been a good collaboration with Juice Wrld and people would agree. [3]

Critical reception

Atrebs of Medium said that it shows "a quintessential view into the elements that make A Boogie" and that there is "a strong control" seen of "the guitar theme, multiple beat switches, voice alterations, and lyrical repetition". [4] Writing for The Paper , Andrew Menjivar described the song alongside two other songs from the album, "Thug Love" and "Streets Don't Love You", claiming that they are "arguably some of the best we've heard from the Bronx artist". [5] The Young Folks' Ryan Feyre opined that the "rock-inspired inflections" of the song would be a good fit within fellow rapper and singer Trippie Redd's A Love Letter to You mixtape series. [6]

Live performances

On February 25, 2020, A Boogie wit da Hoodie performed "Me and My Guitar" live on Genius for its Open Mic segment. [7] He performed the song on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon , which features guitar playing from American singer-songwriter H.E.R., three days later, on February 28, 2020. [8]
