MeepCity is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by experience developer Alexnewtron on the gaming and game development platform Roblox. The original focus of the game was a roleplay where players could chat, customize their homes and avatars, and earn coins to buy items. The game was the first game on Roblox to pass 1 billion total visits, making it one of the most successful games on Roblox. [1] It was averaging 15 million monthly active players—100,000 of which are concurrent, in July 2018. [2] As of November 2025 [update] , MeepCity has over 16 billion visits, their record being with the "Party" update, with over 24 thousand concurrent players. [3] Following the removal of parties, the game would tank in visits. [3]
A few years after its launch in 2016, [1] MeepCity would gain a "party" feature that allowed users to invite others to their homes. [3] News of pornographic role play in the game hit mainstream media, which then prompted Roblox to take action against the game in September of 2025. [3] An announcement that the feature would be removed would be publicized. [4] A few days after Roblox explained its moderation process, MeepCity underwent major changes. [3] The game no longer allowed for custom bios and avatars, which were the features that mainly made inappropriate interactions available. The change also lead to a drop of players. As of 2023, the game had just passed the 15 billion visits milestone. [5] In September 2024, Aaron Robinson had filed a copyright complaint against Binello for allegedly using one of his works without his permission. [6]
In 2016, a developer by the name Alex Binello, a.k.a. Alexnewtron, would start working in Roblox Studio and eventually come up with a simple multiplayer game in the style of Pictionary. [2] Binello would get on alternate accounts to get insights on first-time user experience and interact with everyone. [1] He'd say in a statement, “We have a small team, but together, we design ideas and content based on how people play MeepCity. For example, we saw how much players loved to roleplay in the pizza shack, so, we decided to add an ice cream parlor, and the community loved it”. [1]
In Meepcity, players are able to roleplay in an online lobby while chatting, customizing their homes and avatars, [1] and earning coins to buy items. [7] [8] The game is often noted for its similarities to the games Club Penguin and Toontown Online . [9] [10] The game charges Robux, in-game purchases for currency in Roblox, for premium features such as an in-game boombox, and bonus decorations for the player's virtual home. [2]
