Melling railway station is the terminal station on the single track Melling Line in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. The single platform station serves the suburb of Melling. The station is served by Metlink's electric multiple unit trains.
The Melling Line is expected to close for up to eighteen months from early 2025 to enable the RiverLink flood protection project to proceed. A new Melling station is to be built 250m south of the existing station, which will be preserved as a heritage building. [1] [2] [3] [4]
The station used to be on the Hutt Valley Line section of the Wairarapa Line until 1 March 1954, when the Melling-Belmont section of the line on the western side of the Hutt Valley was closed and the through line to Upper Hutt and the Wairarapa rerouted through the centre of the valley. The truncated line to Melling was then electrified. The new station erected at the same time was about 100m closer to Wellington to avoid a level crossing at the Melling Link Road over the Hutt River.
In the 19th century, the line from Wellington to the Hutt was opened on 14 April 1874. The line past Melling to Silverstream was opened in December 1875.
The original Melling station opened on 26 May 1908. Melling was one of several stations and sidings opened in 1908 on the Hutt Valley section of line, along with Gosse and Co's Siding, Pitcaithly's railway station, the Belmont Quarry Co's Siding (not to be confused with the Belmont railway station), and the Silverstream Bridge railway station. The station building today contains a ticket office and a coffee shop. [6] The building was closed without notice on 18 December 2013 for asbestos removal, [7] reopening on 18 February 2014.
The Melling Station will be moved under the three 2018 NZTA options for replacing the Melling road bridge. [8] The proposed Melling Interchange also involves flood protection work, and will be completed by 2026 (in 2019 the project had been put "on hold"). [9] [10]
Since the introduction of the Matangi EMUs in 2010, two have crashed into the stop block at the north end of the platform. In the first incident, on 15 April 2013, nine passengers and 2 crew were aboard the 7:50 am train that hit the stop block in a low-speed collision. [11] No serious injuries were reported and the line reopened the same day. [12]
A year later on 27 May 2014 the 8:09 am train crashed into and mounted the stop block. Ten passengers were aboard, with one receiving minor injuries and another hospitalised for shock. [13] Services resumed two days later. [14] [15]

Public transport in the Wellington Region, branded under the name Metlink, is the public transport system serving Wellington and its surrounding region. It also included trams until 1964, and trolleybuses until 2017.
Kaiwharawhara railway station, a former railway station on the North Island Main Trunk and the Wairarapa Line in Wellington in New Zealand, closed in 2013. It was the first station north of Wellington, serving the early suburb of Kaiwharawhara. Petone railway station is a dual platform, suburban railway station located in the Lower Hutt, New Zealand suburb of Petone. It is on the Hutt Valley section of the Wairarapa Line, 10.5 km (6.5 mi) north of Wellington, and is the junction for the Melling Branch to Melling, which diverges westward from the main line to the north of the station. The station is served by Metlink suburban services, operated by Transdev Wellington, to Wellington, Melling, Taita, Upper Hutt and Masterton.
Ngauranga railway station is a single island platform railway station in the mainly industrial and commercial suburb of Ngauranga on the Wairarapa Line in Wellington, New Zealand. It is on the Wellington suburban rail network and is served by Melling Line trains and some only Hutt Valley Line trains. Wairarapa Connection trains pass this station but do not stop. All trains are run by Transdev as part of the Metlink network.

The Melling Branch is a railway branch line in the Hutt Valley, north of Wellington, New Zealand. It is part of the national rail network and formerly part of the Wairarapa Line. Until 2010 it was one of only two passenger-only lines in the country, since that year the two being joined by the Onehunga Branch and later by the Manukau Branch.
Upper Hutt railway station is a suburban railway station serving central Upper Hutt, New Zealand. The station is on the Wairarapa Line, 32.4 km (20.1 mi) north of Wellington, and is served by Transdev Wellington on behalf of the Greater Wellington Regional Council. The station is the northern terminus for the electrified Hutt Valley Line to and from Wellington. The diesel-hauled Wairarapa Connection stops at Upper Hutt on its route between Wellington and Masterton.
Waterloo railway station is a dual-platform suburban railway station located in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, and serving immediately the suburbs of Waterloo, Lower Hutt Central and Woburn. The station stands on the Hutt Valley section of the Wairarapa Line, 15.5 km (9.6 mi) north of Wellington. Trains stopping at Waterloo run to Wellington, Taita, Upper Hutt and Masterton, as well as to points in between. Waterloo serves as a major bus-rail interchange, connecting buses to and from central Lower Hutt, Naenae and Wainuiomata with trains to and from Wellington.
Epuni railway station is a suburban railway station serving Epuni and Fairfield in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. The station is located on the Hutt Valley section of the Wairarapa Line, 16.5 km (10.3 mi) north of Wellington. The station is served by Metlink's electric multiple unit trains of the "Matangi" FP class. Trains stopping at Epuni run to Wellington, Taita and Upper Hutt.
The New Zealand FP/FT "Matangi" class is a class of electric multiple units used on the suburban rail network of New Zealand's capital city, Wellington. The class, consisting of an FP power car and an FT trailer car, operates services on all electrified lines of the network which comprise the Kapiti, Hutt Valley, Melling and Johnsonville lines. The units are owned by Greater Wellington Rail Ltd, a subsidiary of the Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC), and have been operated by Transdev Wellington under contract to the GWRC since 2016. They were previously operated by Tranz Metro, a former division of KiwiRail.

Woburn railway station is a suburban railway station serving Woburn and Waiwhetu in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. The station is located on the Hutt Valley section of the Wairarapa Line, 14.4 km (8.9 mi) north of Wellington, and is the junction for the Gracefield Branch to the Hutt Railway Workshops, which diverges eastward from the mainline to the south of the station. Woburn served is by Metlink on behalf of the Greater Wellington Regional Council, with trains stopping at Woburn travelling to Wellington, Taita and Upper Hutt.

Wingate railway station is a suburban railway station in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, serving the Wingate industrial area and parts of Avalon, New Zealand, Naenae and Taitā suburbs. The station is located on the Hutt Valley section of the Wairarapa Line, 19.5 km (12.1 mi) north of Wellington. Western Hutt railway station, formerly Lower Hutt, is an intermediate station on the single-track Melling Line in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, It is served by Metlink electric multiple unit trains operated by Transdev Wellington under the Metlink brand.
Silverstream Bridge railway station was a station on the Hutt Valley Line section of the Wairarapa Line in New Zealand from 1908 until 28 February 1954, when the Melling-Belmont section of the line and the first rail bridge at Silverstream was closed. It was replaced by the Silverstream railway station.
Pitcaithly’s railway station and siding was a station on the Hutt Valley Line section of the Wairarapa Line in New Zealand north of Melling, which ran up the western side of the valley until 1954. It was replaced by Andrews railway station in 1938.
