    Released: October 12, 2016

Miami Garden Club is the debut studio album by American hip hop artist Kitty, released on August 25, 2017. [1] The album was crowdfunded through a campaign on the website Kickstarter. [2]

Hip hop music music genre consisting of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping

Hip hop music, also called hip-hop or rap music, is a music genre developed in the United States by inner-city African Americans in the late 1970s which consists of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching with turntables, break dancing, and graffiti writing. Other elements include sampling beats or bass lines from records, and rhythmic beatboxing. While often used to refer solely to rapping, "hip hop" more properly denotes the practice of the entire subculture. The term hip hop music is sometimes used synonymously with the term rap music, though rapping is not a required component of hip hop music; the genre may also incorporate other elements of hip hop culture, including DJing, turntablism, scratching, beatboxing, and instrumental tracks.

Kitty Ray, known professionally as Kitty, or, previously Kitty Pryde, is an American musician.

Background and production

In 2015, Kitty began working on the album with big-name producers in Los Angeles, but was unhappy with the results. [3] This, along with her feeling bored of following a routine, [4] lead her to decide to produce the album independently. Kitty studied music theory and learned to use the software Ableton in preparation for making the album. [4] Miami Garden Club is the first release by Kitty to feature tracks produced or co-produced by Kitty herself.

Los Angeles City in California

Los Angeles, officially the City of Los Angeles and often known by its initials L.A., is the most populous city in California, the second most populous city in the United States, after New York City, and the third most populous city in North America. With an estimated population of four million, Los Angeles is the cultural, financial, and commercial center of Southern California. The city is known for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, Hollywood and the entertainment industry, and its sprawling metropolis. Los Angeles is the largest city on the West Coast of North America.

Music theory considers the practices and possibilities of music

Music theory is the study of the practices and possibilities of music. The Oxford Companion to Music describes three interrelated uses of the term "music theory":

The first is what is otherwise called 'rudiments', currently taught as the elements of notation, of key signatures, of time signatures, of rhythmic notation, and so on. [...] The second is the study of writings about music from ancient times onwards. [...] The third is an area of current musicological study that seeks to define processes and general principles in music — a sphere of research that can be distinguished from analysis in that it takes as its starting-point not the individual work or performance but the fundamental materials from which it is built.

Ableton Live

Ableton Live is a software music sequencer and digital audio workstation for macOS and Windows. In contrast to many other software sequencers, Live is designed to be an instrument for live performances as well as a tool for composing, recording, arranging, mixing, and mastering, as shown by Ableton's companion hardware product, Ableton Push. It is also used by DJs, as it offers a suite of controls for beatmatching, crossfading, and other effects used by turntablists, and was one of the first music applications to automatically beatmatch songs. The current version of Ableton is "Ableton Live 10". Ableton is available in three versions. Intro, standard, and suite. The latest major release of Live, Version 10, was released on February 6, 2018.

On August 11, 2015, Kitty launched a campaign on Kickstarter to fund her debut album. [2] The first goal of $25,000, which would fund the making of the album itself, was achieved in 30 hours. The goal was then stretched to $50,000, to fund a headlining tour. [5] By the end of the one-month campaign, Kitty raised $51,863 from 1,164 backers.

Kickstarter crowdfunding platform

Kickstarter is an American public-benefit corporation based in Brooklyn, New York, that maintains a global crowdfunding platform focused on creativity and merchandising. The company's stated mission is to "help bring creative projects to life". Kickstarter has reportedly received more than $4 billion in pledges from 15.5 million backers to fund 257,000 creative projects, such as films, music, stage shows, comics, journalism, video games, technology and food-related projects.

The release was originally expected for January 2016, [2] but the album's completion was delayed for various reasons. Kitty has mentioned working with an unnamed producer, and having to discard the songs they made together when their professional relationship broke down. [3] In December 2015, Kitty stated that the album was "taking longer than expected"; citing illness and perfectionism as reasons. [6] Much of the album was scrapped and rewritten because, according to Kitty, "I didn't like [the songs] and wanted to be able to be 100% proud of my work." [7] On January 9, 2016, Kitty revealed that her suitcase had been stolen from LAX. [8] She lost notebooks containing 2–3 years worth of lyrics, including lyrics for the album which she "was entirely proud of and intended on using"; [7] and an external hard drive holding the first draft of the album. Kitty spent time in 2016 focusing on her mental health before restarting work on the album for the third time [4] On April 1, 2017, Kitty announced that the album was complete. [9]

Los Angeles International Airport airport serving the Greater Los Angeles Area

Los Angeles International Airport, locally referred to as LAX, is the primary international airport serving Los Angeles, California.

Miami Garden Club is influenced by "‘80s and ‘90s pop music". It marks a shift from Kitty's previous hip-hop sound—a change which Kitty has attributed to her being "sick of rapping". [3]

Rapping is a musical form of vocal delivery that incorporates "rhyme, rhythmic speech, and street vernacular", which is performed or chanted in a variety of ways, usually over a backing beat or musical accompaniment. The components of rap include "content", "flow", and "delivery". Rap differs from spoken-word poetry in that rap is usually performed in time to an instrumental track. Rap is often associated with, and is a primary ingredient of hip-hop music, but the origins of the phenomenon predate hip-hop culture. The earliest precursor to the modern rap is the West African griot tradition, in which "oral historians", or "praise-singers", would disseminate oral traditions and genealogies, or use their formidable rhetorical techniques for gossip or to "praise or critique individuals." Griot traditions connect to rap along a lineage of Black verbal reverence that goes back to ancient Egyptian practices, through James Brown interacting with the crowd and the band between songs, to Muhammad Ali's quick-witted verbal taunts and the palpitating poems of the Last Poets. Therefore, rap lyrics and music are part of the "Black rhetorical continuum", and aim to reuse elements of past traditions while expanding upon them through "creative use of language and rhetorical styles and strategies. The person credited with originating the style of "delivering rhymes over extensive music", that would become known as rap, was Anthony "DJ Hollywood" Holloway from Harlem, New York.

Upon announcing the completion of the album on April 1, 2017, Kitty shared the cover art via Kickstarter. The artwork was designed by Kitty and drawn by Alé Garza. [9]

On July 28, the album was made available to pre-order, the title track was released as a promotional single, and the music video for the title track was released. The video was directed and produced by Kitty and Sam Ray. [12] [13] [14]
