Microplana robusta is a species of land planarian belonging to the subfamily Microplaninae. [1] It is found in Spain.
The specific epithet is derived from the Latin robustus, meaning "strong, firm", alluding to the large body size. [2]
M. robusta is distinguished from other members of the genus Microplana via its muscular penis bulb, with circular and longitudinal muscle fibers, short penis papilla, short genito-intestinal duct, and a lack of a copulatory bursa.
M. robusta can reach up to 50 mm long and is around 2–3 mm wide. The body is cylindrical, bluntly pointed on both ends. The backside is an orange color; the color darkens slightly as it goes from front to back. [2]
A planarian is one of the many flatworms of the traditional class Turbellaria. It usually describes free-living flatworms of the order Tricladida (triclads), although this common name is also used for a wide number of free-living platyhelminthes. Planaria are common to many parts of the world, living in both saltwater and freshwater ponds and rivers. Some species are terrestrial and are found under logs, in or on the soil, and on plants in humid areas.
Geoplanidae is a family of flatworms known commonly as land planarians or land flatworms.
Dugesiidae is a family of freshwater planarians distributed worldwide. The type genus is Dugesia Girard, 1850.
Dugesia sicula is a species of dugesiid triclad that lives in freshwater bodies of the Mediterranean Basin, where it is widely distributed. It has been reported from Sicily, Elba and Mallorca, Eivissa, Sardinia, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco and Crete.
Bdellouridae is a family of Maricola triclads.
Microplana is a genus of land planarians found in Europe and Africa.
Microplaninae is a subfamily of land planarians.
Camerata robusta is a species of triclad flatworm found in the shores of Italy. It is the only known species in the genus Camerata. Camerata refers to the chambers present in this genus' penis. The species name robusta refers to the strong muscles present in the copulatory apparatus.
Geoplaninae is a subfamily of land planarians endemic to the Neotropical region. However, one species, Obama nungara has been introduced in Europe.
The reproductive system of planarians is broadly similar among different families, although the associated structures can vary in complexity.
Recurva is a genus of freshwater and free-living triclad platyhelminth that belongs to the Dugesiidae family. It contains two known species although, according to molecular evidences, there is probably a third one.
Rhynchodemini is a tribe of land planarians in the subfamily Rhynchodeminae.
Amaga is a genus of land planarians from South America.
Marionfyfea is a genus of land planarians from Antarctic Islands off New Zealand. However, a species has been described from specimens found in Europe, probably introduced.
Marionfyfea adventor is a species of land planarian described in 2016 from specimens found in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and France. However, since the species belongs to the genus Marionfyfea, of which the species are known only from subantarctic islands off New Zealand, it is probably an introduced species in Europe.
Othelosoma is a genus of land planarians found in Africa and India.
Pelmatoplaninini is a tribe of land planarians in the subfamily Rhynchodeminae.
Novibipalium is a genus of land planarians of the subfamily Bipaliinae.
Oregoniplana geniculata is a species of planarian in the family Cercyridae. Its type-locality is China.
Kawakatsua is a genus of triclad belonging to the family Dimarcusidae. It is monotypic, containing the sole species Kawakatsua pumila. It is known from type specimens found on Barro Colorado Island.
