Mike's On: Francesa on the FAN was a sports radio talk show airing on New York City station WFAN, hosted by Mike Francesa. The show debuted on September 3, 2008, as the successor to Francesa's previous program, Mike and the Mad Dog , which was broadcast from 1989 to 2008 and made Francesa and his partner Chris Russo the first nationally known team in sports radio. When simulcast on television, Mike's On is broadcast under the title The Mike Francesa Show; [1] it was simulcast on the YES Network from its inception until January 31, 2014. [2] On March 24, 2014, Francesa signed an agreement to occasionally simulcast a portion of the show on Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2. [3] The arrangement with Fox Sports ended September 11, 2015 with Mike taking the blame for the project not succeeding. [4] Francesa announced his retirement and the final show aired on December 15, 2017.

Mike's On returned to the airwaves on May 1, 2018, after what Francesa described as taking "some time off." [5] On December 6, 2019, Francesa signed off his afternoon drive slot for the final time, transitioning to an expanded role on the Radio.com app and a half-hour daily show on WFAN. [6] On Tuesday, May 26, 2020, Francesa's timeslot was expanded to 6pm-7pm, Weekdays on WFAN. On Thursday, July 23, 2020, Francesa announced that Friday July 24 would be his final show, and he once again retired the following day. [7]

Show format

The format of the show is similar to Mike and the Mad Dog with Francesa giving his opinions on the major sports stories of the day, as well as answering calls from listeners. Also, Francesa brings on guests from various sports ranging from head coaches/managers and players in the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB and NCAA to broadcasters, and sportswriters from major newspapers across the country. The radio show includes sports updates every twenty minutes formerly provided by John Minko.

Name

The show's previous name is Mike'd Up: Francesa on the FAN. Francesa had a TV show on WNBC entitled Mike'd Up: The Francesa Sports Final , and WFAN had to secure permission from WNBC to use the name Mike'd Up. [8] On January 15, 2012, Francesa announced that the show could not reach an agreement with WNBC to continue to license the name Mike'd Up and changed its name to Mike's On: Francesa on the FAN. [9]

Awards

In 2012, 2013 and 2014, Francesa was ranked number one among the 100 most important sports talk radio hosts in America by Talkers Magazine . [12] Francesa credited colleagues at WFAN for his success with special salute to Russo. [13] Francesa won the 2012 Marconi Award for Major Market Personality of the Year, [14] [15] which is his second since 2000. The announcement was made on September 20 at the 2012 National Association of Broadcasters Marconi Radio Awards Dinner and Show in Dallas, Texas.

Christopher Michael Russo, known as Mad Dog, is an American sports radio personality best known as the former co-host of the Mike and the Mad Dog sports radio program with Mike Francesa, which was broadcast on WFAN in New York City and simulcasted on the YES Network. Russo joined Sirius XM Radio in August 2008 and operates his own channel, Mad Dog Radio. He also hosts an afternoon radio show, Mad Dog Unleashed, SiriusXM Ch. 82 Mad Dog Sports Radio.

Michael Kay (sports broadcaster) American sportscaster

Michael Neil Kay is an American sports broadcaster who is the television play-by-play broadcaster of the New York Yankees and host of CenterStage on the YES Network, and the host of The Michael Kay Show heard on WEPN-FM in New York City and simulcast on ESPN Xtra on XM Satellite Radio.

WEPN is an all-sports radio station licensed to New York City. The station is owned-and-operated by The Walt Disney Company and is the flagship station of the ESPN Radio network, primarily carrying the national network lineup. The station has its studios on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and its transmitter site is located in North Bergen, New Jersey.

YES Network American regional sports network

The Yankee Entertainment and Sports Network (YES) is an American pay television regional sports network owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, Sinclair Broadcast Group and Entertainment Studios, Amazon, and The Blackstone Group, RedBird Capital and Mubadala Investment Company, which each own 13%. <i>Imus in the Morning</i> US radio program

Imus in the Morning was a long-running radio show hosted by Don Imus. The show originated on June 2, 1968, on various stations in the Western United States and Cleveland, Ohio before settling on WNBC radio in New York City in 1971. In October 1988, the show moved to WFAN when that station took over WNBC's dial position following an ownership change. It was later syndicated to 60 other stations across the country by Westwood One, a division of CBS Radio, airing weekdays from 5:30 to 10 am Eastern time. Beginning September 3, 1996, the 6 to 9 am portion was simulcast on the cable television network MSNBC.

Mike Francesa

Michael Patrick Francesa is an American sports radio talk show host. Together with Chris Russo, he launched Mike and the Mad Dog in 1989 on WFAN in New York City, which ran until 2008 and is one of the most successful sports-talk radio programs in American history.

Mike and the Mad Dog was an American sports radio show hosted by Mike Francesa and Christopher "Mad Dog" Russo that aired in afternoons on WFAN in New York City from September 1989 to August 2008. From 2002 the show was simulcast on television on the YES Network. On the radio, the show was simulcast beginning 2007 on WQYK in Tampa, Florida and from 2004 until 2007 on WROW in Albany, New York.

Joseph S. Benigno is an American sports radio personality. He was a co-host of the Joe & Evan show with Evan Roberts weekdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. ET on the New York radio stations WFAN-AM and WFAN-FM. His retirement was announced on October 28, 2020.

Ian Eagle American sports announcer

Ian Eagle is an American sports announcer. John A. Minko is an American sports radio and television personality. He was a "20/20 sports anchor" on radio station WFAN in New York City and had worked there from its inception in 1987 until 2020. Nicknamed "Coach" by his coworkers, Minko provides listeners with up-to-the-minute sports news, Sundays through Thursdays between the hours of 10am and 5pm (Monday-Thursday) and 6am and 12pm (Sunday). He has also, at times, been called the "Dean of Updates", a moniker in recognition of his seniority. On April 2nd, 2020, Minko had said that April 3rd was his last day on WFAN.

Evan Roberts (radio personality) American sports radio personality (born 1983)

Evan Roberts is an American sports radio personality. He currently co-hosts the Carton and Roberts radio show, along with Craig Carton, weekdays from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. ET on the New York radio stations WFAN-AM and WFAN-FM.

The Sports Fan Radio Network was a national sports talk radio network that existed from 1996 through 2001, when it abruptly folded.

Bob Heussler, currently resides in Hamden, Connecticut and is a radio sports broadcaster at WFAN in New York for thirty years. He made regular appearances on the Mike and the Mad Dog and Mike's On programs since 1993. He currently is the radio play-by-play voice of the WNBA's Connecticut Sun. Additionally, Bob broadcasts Fairfield Stags men's basketball on WVOF and has done play-by-play for University of Connecticut basketball and football for the Connecticut Radio Network. Heussler's radio call of Tate George's game-winning shot in the 1990 East Regional semifinals against Clemson is one of the most famous in college basketball history. Heussler is a 1977 graduate of the University of Bridgeport.

Craig Harris Carton is an American radio personality best known as the co-host of the Carton and Roberts sports radio program on WFAN (AM) in New York City.

Boomer and Gio is a morning drive sports radio program on WFAN-AM and WFAN-FM in New York City. It is hosted by former National Football League player Boomer Esiason and radio personality Gregg Giannotti.

The New York Sports radio WFAN, first broadcast on July 1, 1987 at 1050AM replacing WHN. WFAN was the first all sports station in the United States. The station's current frequency, 660AM. was formerly known as WNBC and first transmitted on March 2, 1922. WFAN moved to 660AM at 5:30PM Eastern Time on October 7, 1988 when WNBC signed off for the last time.

Mike'd Up was Mike Francesa's Sunday late-night sports talk show on WNBC-TV. On July 19, 2011, Francesa announced on WFAN that he will end the show so he can spend more time with his family. WNBC's head sports anchor, Bruce Beck succeeded Francesa as show host. In September 2013, WNBC renamed the program, Sports Final.

Phil Mushnick is a sports columnist for the New York Post. Over his career he has served as a beat reporter for the New York Cosmos and the New Jersey Nets, and New York Rangers. In 1982 he was named the Post's television and radio columnist. Mushnick is infamous for his scathing commentary and columns, many of which are critical of a particular person.
