Thoroughbred Racing on Fox Sports is the de facto title for a series of horse races events whose broadcasts are produced by Fox Sports, for Fox, Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2 television networks in the United States. The flagship program for the series is America's Day at the Races.

History

1998–2000

Fox Sports first began covering thoroughbred racing in 1998 with a multi-year deal for the Santa Anita Derby. [1] Fox Sports expanded its coverage in 1999 through a partnership with the National Thoroughbred Racing Association. Fox aired 11 races as part of the partnership, branded as NTRA Champions on Fox. [2] The partnership did not return in 2001. [3] [4] [5]

2014–2020

Fox Sports returned to horse racing in 2014 with a two-year agreement with The Jockey Club for up to 10 races on Fox Sports 1 and Fox Deportes. [6]

In 2016, Fox Sports reached an agreement with the New York Racing Association (NYRA) for coverage of 40 summer races from Saratoga Race Course on Fox Sports 2. The races were branded as Saratoga Live. [7] [8] In 2017, the Fox Sports expanded its NYRA races to include races from Aqueduct Racetrack and Belmont Park, branded as Aqueduct Live and Belmont Park Live respectively. [9]

In August 2017, the NYRA extended its summer agreement with Fox Sports through 2020. [10] In November 2018, the NYRA and Fox Sports reached a new agreement that made Fox Sports the year-round television home for NYRA races from Saratoga and Belmont, featuring more than 600 hours of horse racing. [11]

In 2019, the NYRA and Fox debuted America's Day at the Races, which has become their flagship horse racing show. [12] Also in 2019, through its partnership with the NYRA, the Fox network began airing the Travers Stakes, its first horse race since NTRA Champions on Fox races in 2000. [13] Also through its partnership with the NYRA, in 2020, Fox Sports 1 began airing the Saudi Cup. [14]

2021–present

In March 2021, Fox Sports and the NYRA announced an extension to their rights deal through 2030. As part of the agreement, Fox Sports will air 700 hours of coverage each year from Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course. The Travers Stakes will continue to air on Fox. Fox also acquired a 25% stake in NYRA Bets. [15] In 2022, Fox Sports reached an agreement with the NYRA for the rights to the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the horse racing triple crown, through 2030. [16]

Recently, Fox has aired more races on its main network. In 2022, Fox aired the Jim Dandy Stakes. [17] In 2023, Fox aired the Wood Memorial Stakes [18] and reached an agreement with the Breeders' Cup Challenge to air the Fourstardave Handicap. [19] Beginning July 22, 2023, Fox aired 6 straight weeks of races branded as Fox Saratoga Saturday. [20]

It is nicknamed the "Midsummer Derby" and is the third-ranked race for American three-year-olds according to international classifications, behind only the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. First held in 1864, it is the oldest stakes race in the United States specifically for 3-year-olds, and was named for William R. Travers, the president of the old Saratoga Racing Association. His horse, Kentucky, won the first running of the Travers. The race was not run in 1896, 1898, 1899, 1900, 1911, and 1912.

The Jockey Club is the breed registry for Thoroughbred horses in the United States and Canada. It is dedicated to the improvement of Thoroughbred breeding and racing and fulfills that mandate by serving many segments of the industry through its subsidiary companies and by supporting numerous industry initiatives.

Triple Crown Productions was an ad hoc production company that produced the series of Triple Crown races for thoroughbred horses.

Tom Durkin is a semi-retired American sportscaster and public address announcer specializing in Thoroughbred horse racing. He was the race caller for NBC Sports from 1984 through 2010 and served as announcer for the New York Racing Association from 1990 until retiring in 2014. For his career-long dedication, he was awarded the Eclipse Award of Merit in January 2015.

Thoroughbred Racing on NBC is the de facto title for a series of horse races events whose broadcasts are produced by NBC Sports, the sports division of the NBC television network in the United States. NBC's relationship with the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing dates back to 1949 when the NBC Red Network carried the first radio broadcast of the Kentucky Derby.

Richard E. "Rick" Dutrow Jr. is an American thoroughbred racehorse trainer. A winner of multiple stakes races including three victories in the Breeders' Cup, Dutrow campaigned Big Brown to his wins in the Florida Derby, Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Haskell Invitational in 2008 en route to champion three-year-old male honors.

In the United States, the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, commonly known as the Triple Crown, is a series of horse races for three-year-old Thoroughbreds, consisting of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes. The three races were inaugurated in different years, the last being the Kentucky Derby in 1875. The Triple Crown Trophy, commissioned in 1950 but awarded to all previous winners as well as those after 1950, is awarded to a horse who wins all three races and is thereafter designated as a Triple Crown winner. The races are traditionally run in May and early June of each year, although global events have resulted in schedule adjustments, such as in 1945 and 2020.

The American Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) based in Lexington, Kentucky is a trade organization for Thoroughbred racehorse owners and breeders. Founded in 1961, the TOBA's stated mission is to "improve the economics, integrity and pleasure of the sport on behalf of Thoroughbred owners and breeders."

Sackatoga Stable is an American Thoroughbred horse racing syndicate in Saratoga Springs, New York. They are best known as the owners of 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Funny Cide and 2020 Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes winner Tiz the Law.

ESPN and ESPN2's coverage of Thoroughbred racing consisted of NTRA Racing to the Kentucky Derby., Road To The World Thoroughbred Championships/NTRA Racing to the Breeders' Cup, a series of prep races for the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, the post position draw for the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes undercard races, the Kentucky Oaks and Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, NTRA 2Day At the Races, Racing Across America, the Preakness undercard races, the Eclipse Awards show, and Long John Silver's Wire to Wire, a weekly thoroughbred racing magazine show. They also had Triple Crown morning shows such as Breakfast at Churchill Downs and Breakfast at Pimlico. ESPN also broadcast NTRA Super Saturdays as well.

ABC's coverage of Thoroughbred racing currently consists of a portion of the Breeders Cup. Previously, ABC's coverage also included the Kentucky Derby (1975–2000), the Preakness Stakes (1977–2000), and the Belmont Stakes.

John Durso Jr. is a communications professional who has served in lead, highly-visible roles in government, energy, transportation and sports. Most recently. he served as chief spokesperson and principal communications and public affairs strategist for the 147th running of the Belmont Stakes, highlighted by American Pharoah's attainment of horse racing's "Triple Crown" for the first time in 37 years.

The John A. Nerud Stakes is a Grade II American Thoroughbred horse race for four years old or older at a distance of seven furlongs on the dirt run annually in early July at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. The event currently offers a purse of $250,000.
