Murder in a Small Town is a Canadian crime drama series which premiered on Global in Canada, and Fox in the United States, [1] [2] on September 24, 2024. It is based on the Alberg and Cassandra Mysteries, a series of B.C.-set crime novels by L. R. Wright. [3] It was filmed at Gibsons on British Columbia's Sunshine Coast. [4]

Production

Development

Originated by Soapbox Productions and co-produced with Sepia Films in association with Future Shack Entertainment, the series was directed by Milan Cheylov and written by Ian Weir. [1] Shooting locations included Molly's Reach, the Gibsons restaurant best known as a key setting in the Canadian comedy-drama series The Beachcombers . [5]

Distribution

In the United States, the series was picked up by Fox in late 2023, for the 2024–2025 television season. [1] [2] ITV Studios will distribute the series outside of the U.S and Canada. [8]

Reception

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, Murder in a Small Town has an approval rating of 70% based on 10 critic reviews, with an average rating of 5.3/10. [9] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 56 out of 100 based on 7 critics, indicating "mixed or average" reviews. [10] The show was criticized for containing "bizarre mentions of race". [11]

The series focuses on various murder cases that take place within small country villages across the fictional English county of Midsomer, and the efforts of the senior police detective and his partner within the fictional Midsomer Constabulary to solve the crime by determining who the culprit is and the motive for their actions. It differs from other detective dramas in featuring a mixture of lighthearted whimsy and dark humour, as well as a notable soundtrack with a title theme that includes a theremin.

Lewis is a British television detective drama produced for ITV, first airing in 2006 (pilot) then 2007. It is a spin-off from Inspector Morse and, like that series, it is set in Oxford. Kevin Whately reprises his character Robert "Robbie" Lewis, who was Morse's sergeant in the original series. Lewis has now been promoted to detective inspector and is assisted by DS James Hathaway, portrayed by Laurence Fox, who was promoted to inspector before the eighth series. Three Pines is a mystery television series starring Alfred Molina based on the novel series by Louise Penny, centered on Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. It premiered on Amazon Prime Video on 2 December 2022 with four murder mysteries, each spanning two episodes. In March 2023, it was announced that the series would not receive a second season, remaining a miniseries.
