History

The Mimouna Association started in 2007 as a Muslim [1] student-run club at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane seeking to promote Jewish heritage and interfaith dialogue around the country. [2] "One of the founding principles of the Association is to reclaim the cultural diversity of Morocco through its history. In a context where intolerance and extremism are rampant, Mimouna, as a Citizen Patriot Association, would like to contribute to the preserving and strengthening of the plural Moroccan identity."

It was originally known as the Mimouna Club. [3]

In August 2012, the student club became an officially incorporated nonprofit organization with the name "Association Mimouna".

Mission

The Mimouna Association is often cited as the leading entity in Morocco fighting antisemitism [4] and strengthening ties between Muslims and Jews. [5] Mimouna "has worked to educate young Moroccans about the Kingdom's rich Jewish history". [6]

"a coalition of Muslim students who have taken on the task of highlighting the deep Jewish roots woven into Moroccan culture." [7]

Antisemitism in the Arab world refers to prejudice against Jews in Arab countries. Antisemitism has increased greatly in the region since the beginning of the 20th century, for several reasons: the dissolution and breakdown of the Ottoman Empire and traditional Islamic society; European influence, brought about by Western imperialism and Arab Christians; Nazi propaganda and relations between Nazi Germany and the Arab world; resentment over Jewish nationalism; the rise of Arab nationalism; and the widespread proliferation of anti-Jewish and anti-Zionist conspiracy theories.

Due to proximity, the term 'Maghrebi Jews' often refers to Egyptian Jews as well. These Jews, those from North Africa, constitute the second largest Jewish diaspora group.

Antisemitism in the United States Hatred towards the Jewish people within the US

Antisemitism in the United States has existed for centuries. In the United States, most Jewish community relations agencies distinguish between antisemitism, which is measured in terms of attitudes and behaviors; and the security and status of American Jews, which are measured by specific incidents. FBI data shows that Jews were the most likely group to be targeted for religiously-motivated hate crimes in every year since 1991, the Anti-Defamation League said in 2019. Evidence suggests the true number of hate crimes against Jews is underreported, as is the case for many targeted groups.

Anti-Zionism is opposition to Zionism. The term is broadly defined in the modern era as opposition to the State of Israel or, prior to 1948, its establishment, as well as to the political movement of Jews to self-determination.

Moroccan Jews are Jews who live or have lived in Morocco. A significant Jewish population migrated from Spain and Portugal, after the Spanish Inquisition, to the area and settled among Arab-Berbers. They were later met by a second wave of migration from the Iberian peninsula in the period immediately preceding and following the 1492 Alhambra Decree, when Jews were expelled from Spain, and soon after, from Portugal. This second immigration wave changed Moroccan Jewry, who largely embraced the Andalusian Sephardic liturgy, to switch to a mostly Sephardic identity.

Antisemitism in France has become heightened since the late 20th century and into the 21st century. In the early 21st century, most Jews in France, like most Muslims in France, are of North African origin. France has the largest population of Jews in the diaspora after the United States—an estimated 500,000–600,000 persons. Paris has the highest population, followed by Marseilles, which has 70,000 Jews, most of North African origin. Expressions of anti-semitism were seen to rise during the Six-Day War of 1967 and the French anti-Zionist campaign of the 1970s and 1980s. Following the electoral successes achieved by the extreme right-wing National Front and an increasing denial of the Holocaust among some persons in the 1990s, surveys showed an increase in stereotypical antisemitic beliefs among the general French population.

Antisemitism in the United Kingdom signifies hatred of and discrimination against Jews in Britain. Discrimination and hostility against the community since its establishment in 1070 resulted in a series of massacres on several occasions and their expulsion from the country in 1290. They were readmitted by Oliver Cromwell in 1655.
