The Northern Territory Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services is a Minister of the Crown in the Government of the Northern Territory. [1]

Minister of the Crown is a formal constitutional term used in Commonwealth realms to describe a minister to the reigning sovereign or their viceroy. The term indicates that the minister serves at His/Her Majesty's pleasure, and advises the sovereign or viceroy on how to exercise the Crown prerogatives relative to the minister's department or ministry.

The Government of Northern Territory was formed in 1978 with the granting of self-government to the Territory. The Northern Territory is a territory of the Commonwealth of Australia, and the Constitution of Australia and Commonwealth law regulates its relationship with the Commonwealth.

The Minister is responsible for police, emergency services, volunteer emergency management, fire and rescue services, volunteer fire and rescue management, and oversees the Northern Territory Police. [1]

The Northern Territory Police is the police body that has legal jurisdiction over the Northern Territory of Australia. This police service has 1302 gazetted police positions made up of 55 senior sergeants, 200 sergeants, 741 constables, 159 auxiliaries, and 84 Aboriginal community police officers. The rest of the positions are members of commissioned rank and 10 inoperative positions. It also has a civilian staff of 297 across 48 stations.

The current minister is Michael Gunner (Labor). He was sworn in on 31 August 2016 following the Labor victory at the 2016 election. [1] [2]

2020 Northern Territory general election

The next Northern Territory general election, which is scheduled for 22 August 2020, will elect members of the Legislative Assembly in the unicameral Northern Territory Parliament. All 25 seats in the Legislative Assembly whose current members were elected at the 2016 election will become vacant. Members are elected through optional preferential instant-runoff voting in single-member electorates. The election will be conducted by the Northern Territory Electoral Commission, an independent body answerable to Parliament. The incumbent centre-left Labor Party (ALP) majority government, led by Chief Minister Michael Gunner will attempt to win a second term of government, and will be challenged by the centre-right Country Liberal Party (CLP) opposition, led by Opposition Leader Gary Higgins.

The Henderson Ministry was the ministry of the eighth Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, Paul Henderson. It was sworn in on 26 November 2007, following the resignation of Clare Martin and her deputy Syd Stirling.
