Mississippi Highway 773 (MS 773) is a short highway in northern Mississippi. The route starts at MS 2, where it travels northwestward. MS 773 soon ends at County Road 500 (CR 500), and continues as CR 549. MS 773 was designated on May 27, 2004, and has not changed significantly since.

Route description

All of the route is in Tippah County, and is maintained by the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT). [1] MS 773 starts at MS 2 at a T-intersection and travels northwestward. The route soon enters a forest, with small patches of grass. East of CR 567, MS 773 begins curving west. The road soon travels north again and intersects CR 500, MS 773's northern terminus. The road continues as CR 549. [2] [3] MS 773 is not included as a part of the National Highway System (NHS), a network of highways identified as being most important for the economy, mobility and defense of the nation. [4] The route is legally defined in Mississippi Code § 65-3-3, and is also designated as "Joe Mitch McElwain Memorial Highway". [5]

History

MS 773 was designated on May 27, 2004, after House Bill 1215 passed. The route was designated from MS 2 to CR 500. [1] The route was also given the designation "Joe Mitch McElwain Memorial Highway" on the same day. [5]

The eastern segment starts at MS 4 near Ripley and it travels northeastwards towards Corinth. The route becomes concurrent with U.S. Route 72 and US 45 in Corinth, and ends at the Tennessee state line. The road continues as Tennessee State Route 22. The route was designated around 1932, from the state line near Mount Pleasant to the state line near Corinth. The section west of Corinth became a part of US 72 by 1935, and the route was extended southwestwards to Hickory Flat by 1958.

Mississippi Highway 555 is a state highway in southwestern Mississippi. The route has two sections, both in Adams County. The first section starts at Ogden Road and travels northwestward to its terminus at US 61. The second section starts at the concurrency of MS 930 and MS 932 and the concurrency of US 61 and US 84 in Natchez. MS 555 travels northward through Pine Ridge and ends at Anna's Bottom Road near the Anna Site. The route travels by a few historical locations, including the Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church.

Mississippi Highway 554 is a short highway near Natchez, Mississippi. The route starts at MS 555, and travels eastward. The road intersects the entrance to Natchez–Adams County Airport before ending at U.S. Route 61. The route was designated in 1957, and it included a separate route in southern Adams County. MS 554 was temporarily removed from the highway system in 1967, but was added back in 1973.

Mississippi Highway 53 is a state highway in Mississippi. The highway starts at U.S. Highway 49 in Gulfport and travels northwestward to MS 603 in Hancock County. The road then travels north to Poplarville, meeting Interstate 59 (I-59). MS 53 ends at MS 26 and US 11 in southwestern Poplarville. Mississippi Highway 450 is a highway in western Mississippi. Its western terminus is at MS 1 south of Benoit. The route travels east to its eastern terminus at U.S. Route 61 and US 278. It was designated in 1956, starting at MS 1 south of Scott, and ending at Choctaw. Starting in 1962, the section near Stringtown was rerouted significantly. The last realignment was in 1974, where the section near Stringtown was straightened, and US 61 moved east of Choctaw.

Mississippi Highway 465 is a highway in the southern region of the Mississippi Delta. The highway starts at U.S. Route 61 near Redwood. It travels westward towards the Mississippi River, and then northwards to the village of Eagle Bend. The highway then traverses on the Mississippi River levee on a one-lane road. Later, MS 465 leaves the levee, continues northward, and soon ends at MS 1.

Mississippi Highway 454 is a state highway in western Mississippi. MS 454 starts at U.S. Highway 82 and US 278. It travels eastward to its eastern terminus at MS 1. The road that became MS 454 was constructed in 1940 and opened the next year. MS 454 was designated in 1953, and has not changed significantly since.

Mississippi Highway 473 is a short highway in central Mississippi. Its southern terminus is at the Hinds–Copiah county line. The route travels north to Terry, and turns west. MS 473 enters Terry, and ends at Interstate 55 (I-55) and U.S. Route 51. The route was designated in 1957, from MS 27 to US 51. MS 473 was removed from the state highway system in 1967. It was restored into the system in 1995, from the county line to I-55/US 51.

Mississippi Highway 161 (MS 161) is a state highway designation for three highways in the U.S. state of Mississippi, consisting of old alignments of U.S. Route 61 (US 61). Totaling at 19.872 miles (31.981 km), the three sections are located in Bolivar, Coahoma, and Desoto counties. The Bolivar County section, designated in 2000, travels from Merigold to Mound Bayou and Shelby. In Coahoma County, MS 161 was designated in 2004 and runs through Clarksdale and Lyon. Mississippi Highway 444 (MS 444) is a short highway in western Mississippi. Its western terminus is at MS 1, and travels eastward through six miles (9.7 km) of farmland. Mississippi Highway 604 (MS 604) is a 5.071-mile-long (8.161 km) state highway on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Its southern terminus is at U.S. Route 90 (US 90). MS 604 travels northward through Pearlington to its northern terminus at MS 607. The route was designated in 1950, after US 90 was realigned off of it in 1939 onto a new road built in 1936.

Mississippi Highway 792 is a road in eastern Mississippi. It starts at U.S. Route 45, and travels east. Near halfway of the route, SR 792 turns south and continues to its eastern terminus at MS 388. The highway was designated in 1998, and no major changes have been made since.

Mississippi Highway 617 is a short highway in southern Mississippi. Its southern terminus is in the Port of Pascagoula. The route then travels north for nearly two mi (3.2 km) and ends at U.S. Route 90. The road was constructed in 1973, and an interchange was added at US 90 around 1993. MS 617 was designated on July 1, 2002, and no significant changes were made since.

Mississippi Highway 791 is a short highway in eastern Mississippi. The southern terminus is at Artesia Road, and travels near the Golden Triangle Regional Airport. The highway continues to its northern terminus is at U.S. Route 82. The road was constructed in 1998, and was designated MS 791 in 2008.

Mississippi Highway 366 is a short highway in northeastern Mississippi. The road starts at MS 25 in Belmont, and travels southeastward through Golden to the Alabama state border. The route was created in 1958, and hasn't changed significantly since.

Mississippi Highway 531 (MS 531) is a state highway in central Mississippi. The road starts at MS 28 near Taylorsville and travels northeastward. It crosses from Smith County to Jasper County, and ends at MS 18 in the town of Bay Springs. The route was designated in 1956 along its current alignment, and it was paved by 1960.

Mississippi Highway 368 is a state highway in northern Mississippi. The route starts at MS 2 and MS 15 in Blue Mountain and travels eastward from the town. The road intersects a few city streets inside the town and county roads outside it. MS 368 ends at its intersection with County Road 700. The route was designated around 1956, connecting MS 2 and MS 15 in Blue Mountain to MS 370 near Dumas. A western extension to MS 5 existed for ten years from 1957 to 1967, and the section east of CO 700 gradually returned to Tippah County for maintenance.
