Mohaka is a small settlement in the northern Hawke's Bay region of the eastern North Island of New Zealand. It is located on the coast of Hawke Bay, 20 kilometres southwest of Wairoa.
The Mohaka River reaches the coast close to Mohaka. [1] [2]
Mohaka has two tribal meeting grounds for the iwi of Ngāti Pāhauwera, and the Ngāti Kahungunu hapū of Kurahikakawa: Waiapapa-a-Iwi Mohaka Marae and Te Kahu O Te Rangi meeting house, and Waihua or Kurahikakawa Marae. [3] [4]
In October 2020, the Government committed $1,949,075 from the Provincial Growth Fund to upgrade the two marae and 22 other Ngāti Kahungunu marae, creating 164 jobs. [5]
Mohaka School is a Year 1-8 co-educational state primary school. [6] It is a decile 1 school with a roll of 58 as of March 2021. [7] [8]
Murupara is a town located in the Whakatāne District and Bay of Plenty Region of New Zealand's North Island. The town is situated in an isolated part of the region between the Kaingaroa Forest and Te Urewera protected area, on the banks of the Rangitaiki River, 65 kilometres southeast of Rotorua.

Maungaharuru Tangitū is a collective of Māori hapū (subtribes) of the Ngāti Kahungunu iwi in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand, who joined forces for Treaty of Waitangi settlement negotiations. The several hapū are Marangatūhetaua, Ngāi Tauira, Ngāi Te Ruruku ki Tangoio, Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Kurumōkihi and Ngāti Whakaari. The group's rohe ranges from Bay View in the south to the Waitaha Stream in the north, and from the Maungaharuru Range in the west to the sea in Hawke Bay, that part of the sea being known as Tangitū.
