Mohammad Shariatmadari (Persian:محمدشریعتمداری;born 24 June 1960) is an Iranian politician and former Minister of Cooperatives,Labour and Social Welfare. He was in position of minister of Industry,from 2017 to 2018. He also served as minister of commerce from 1997 to 2005 in the cabinet of President Mohammad Khatami. He was campaign chairman of Hassan Rouhani for 2017 bid. [1]
Shariatmadari is a reformist [5] and regarded a moderate figure within the camp (in contrast to radical reformers),although he shares some views with the conservatives. [6]
Shariatmadari was born in Tehran on 24 June 1960. [7] He attended the University of Kerman and graduated with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. [7]
Shariatmadari became a member of Council of the islamic revolution following the 1979 revolution. He is among the founders of Iran’s intelligence ministry and served as deputy intelligence minister. [8] He was one of the supporters of Ayatollah Mohammad Reyshahri in the presidential election in 1997. [7] Reyshahri lost the election and Mohammad Khatami became the president.
He was the minister of commerce from 1997 to 2005 in the cabinet headed by President Khatami. [9] [10] [11] In 2006,he was appointed to then newly founded the Strategic Council for Foreign Relation as a member. [12] He is also a foreign policy advisor to Ali Khamenei,Supreme Leader of Iran. On 8 October 2013,President Hassan Rouhani appointed Shariatmadari as vice president for executive affairs. [14] He was also appointed as acting Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports on 28 October 2013 after Rouhani's nominee for the post was rejected by the Parliament. [15]
In August 2012,the Society for Defending the Values of the Islamic Revolution announced that Shariatmadari as its candidate for the presidential election to be held in June 2013. [9] He also confirmed it in January 2013. [16] He was among independent and technocrat candidates. [17] [18] On the other hand,he was also regarded as one of the reformist candidates. [19] He announced in April 2013 that he would withdraw his candidacy if Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani,Ali Akbar Nategh Nouri,Mohammad Khatami or Hassan Khomeini run for the election. [13] In May 2013,Shariatmadari withdrew his candidacy in favor of Rafsanjani. [20] [21]
Mohammad Khatami is an Iranian reformist politician who served as the fifth president of Iran from 3 August 1997 to 3 August 2005. He also served as Iran's Minister of Culture from 1982 to 1992. Later,he was critical of the government of subsequent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Ali Akbar Hashemi Bahramani Rafsanjani,commonly known as Hashemi Rafsanjani,was an Iranian politician and writer who served as the fourth president of Iran from 1989 to 1997. One of the founding fathers of the Islamic Republic,Rafsanjani was the head of the Assembly of Experts from 2007 until 2011 when he decided not to nominate himself for the post. He was also the chairman of the Expediency Discernment Council.
Ali Ardeshir Larijani is an Iranian moderate politician,philosopher and former military officer in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps,who served as the Speaker of the Parliament of Iran from 2008 to 2020. He has been a member of the Expediency Discernment Council since 2020,having previously served from 1997 to 2008. Larijani is a candidate for president of Iran in the 2024 presidential election. He previously ran in 2005,but was disqualified from running in 2021.
Mehdi Karroubi is an Iranian Shia cleric and reformist politician leading the National Trust Party. Following 2009–2010 Iranian election protests,Karroubi was put under house arrest in February 2011 –reportedly ordered by the Supreme Leader of Iran –without officially being charged,although he is accused of being a "seditionist" and "traitor". As of 2021,he is still confined to his house.
Mir-Hossein Mousavi Khameneh is an Iranian reformist politician,artist and architect who served as the 49th and last Prime Minister of Iran from 1981 to 1989. He was a reformist candidate for the 2009 presidential election and eventually the leader of the opposition in the post-election unrest. Mousavi served as the president of the Iranian Academy of Arts until 2009,when conservative authorities removed him. Although Mousavi had always considered himself a reformist and believed in promoting change within the 1979 Revolution constitution,on 3 Feb 2023,in response to the violent suppression of Iranians by Ali Khamenei,the Supreme Leader of Iran,he announced opposition to the Islamic Republic constitution and asked for a widespread referendum to fully change the constitution and make a fundamental change in Iran's political system.
Mohammad Reza Aref is an Iranian engineer,academic and reformist politician who was the parliamentary leader of reformists' Hope fraction in the Iranian Parliament,representing Tehran,Rey,Shemiranat and Eslamshahr. Aref has also been heading the Reformists' Supreme Council for Policymaking since its establishment in 2015. He is currently member of the Expediency Discernment Council.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf or Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf is an Iranian conservative politician,former military officer,and current Speaker of the Parliament of Iran since 2020. He held office as the Mayor of Tehran from 2005 to 2017. Ghalibaf was formerly Iran's Chief of police from 2000 to 2005 and commander of the Revolutionary Guards' Air Force from 1997 to 2000.
Mohammad-Ali Najafi is an Iranian mathematician and reformist politician who was the Mayor of Tehran,serving in the post for eight months,until April 2018. He held cabinet portfolios during the 1980s,1990s and 2010s. He is also a retired professor of mathematics at Sharif University of Technology.
Eshaq Jahangiri Kouhshahi is an Iranian politician who served as the sixth first vice president from 2013 until 2021 in Hassan Rouhani's government. Jahangiri was the minister of industries and mines from 1997 to 2005 under President Mohammad Khatami. Before that,he was the governor of Isfahan Province. He was also a member of Parliament for two terms.
Mir-Hossein Mousavi Khameneh served as the last Prime Minister of Iran,from 1981 to 1989,before the position was abolished in the 1989 review of the Iranian constitution. In the years leading up to the Islamic Revolution,Mousavi and his wife,Zahra Rahnavard,moved to the United States;they returned to Iran shortly after the establishment of the Islamic Republic.

Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani served as the fourth president of Iran from 1989 until 1997.
Mohsen Hashemi Rafsanjani is an Iranian politician,academic and engineer who served as a member and was chairman of the City Council of Tehran from 2017 to 2021. He was the deputy director of Iran's Islamic Azad University from 2013 until 2017 and chairman and CEO of Tehran Metro for 13 years. He was the main reformist member candidate for the fourth period of the Tehran city council in 2013 as Tehran Mayor,but lost to Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. In 2017,he was elected as a city councilor and later was elected as chairman of the council.
Hassan Rouhani,a moderate Iranian politician and former Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council,also known as the Diplomat Sheikh,launched his presidential campaign in March 2013. He was earlier expected to withdraw and endorse Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani after he registered,but he returned to the race after Hashemi's disqualification. The symbol of Rouhani's campaign was a key and his slogan was "Government of Prudence and Hope." On 15 June,he was elected as the president with 18,613,329 votes.
The Council for Coordinating the Reforms Front or the Reformist Front Coordination Council is the umbrella organization,coalition and council of main political groups within the Iranian reform movement. Since 2015,it is overseen by the Reformists' Supreme Council for Policy-making.
