Jafar Towfighi (born 19 March 1956) is an Iranian chemical engineer, academic, politician and senior consultant of the ministry of science, research and technology who served as minister of science, research and technology for two terms. First in the cabinet headed by President Mohammad Khatami from 2003 till 2005, and second in 2013 as acting minister.

Early life and education

Towfighi was born in Tehran on 19 March 1956. [1] He holds a master's degree in chemical engineering, which he received from Shiraz University in 1981. Then he obtained a PhD again in chemical engineering from Bucharest Polytechnic Institute in Romania in 1986. [1]

Career

Towfighi began his academic career at Tarbiat Modares University in 1987. He served at different positions at the university until 1996 when he was appointed advisor to deputy education minister. In 1997, he was appointed deputy education minister and was in office until 2003. Then he was named as minister of science, research and technology, and his term lasted until 2005. [2] After working as the dean of the faculty of energy at Sharif University of Technology from 2008 to 2010, he began to work at Tarbiat Modarres University's faculty of engineering as a full professor. [1] He was Mohammad Reza Aref's campaign manager during the 2013 presidential election. [3]

On 17 August 2013, he was appointed acting minister of science by Hassan Rouhani following the nominated candidate for the post was rejected by the Majlis on 15 August. [4]

Farhad Daneshjoo is an Iranian academic, and the current President of Tarbiat Modares University. He is the former president of the Azad University, which was elected for this position on 17 January 2012 and removed from his office by the university's central committee on 18 September 2013. He is said to have been a student of PhD in England at the time of Ayatollah Khomeini's Fatwa on Salman Rushdie's death sentence. He was expelled from England as one of the students burning a bookshop selling Rushdie's books. He was president of the Tarbiat Modares University for five years from 2005 to 2010. He is one of the three brothers of Daneshjoo. His elder brother, Kamran Daneshjoo was the Minister of Science in the government of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Khosro Daneshjoo was a member of City Council of Tehran. His sister, Parisa Daneshjoo is also an academic.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Hakim Sabzevari University</span>

Hakim Sabzevari University is one of the most developed public universities in Sabzevar city at Razavi Khorasan province, Iran.It was established in 1987 as a branch of Tarbiat Moallem University of Tehran but later became independent and it was renamed to Hakim Sabzevari University in 2011, after Hadi Sabzevari, a prominent Iranian philosopher and theologian. HSU offers 139 bachelors, masters, and Ph.D. programs to more than 8152 male and female students studying under about 263 faculty members in 10 departments. According to the Islamic World Science Citation Center statistics, HSU is ranked 41st in Iran amongst other universities of Ministry of Science, Research and Technology. The university currently consists of 10 faculties.

Ali Yachkaschi is an Iranian professor of Environmental science, environmental activist and author. Following his high school diploma, he left Iran to continue his higher education at the University of Göttingen in Germany. He achieved a B.Sc, M.Sc as well as a PhD degree in management and policy of natural resources from the University of Göttingen. He is known as the “Father of Environmental Sciences in Iran”, due to his outstanding efforts and achievements to publicize the awareness to environmental protection in the country, including the foundation of environmental sciences as an independent field of study in 1974 at the University of Tehran, Iran. During his career in universities of Tehran and Mazandaran, he initiated numerous exchange programs for students and academic staff of Iranian and German faculties of forest and environmental sciences, thereby contributing to strengthen the mutual cultural and scientific understanding between scientific centers of both countries.

Gholam Ali Montazer was born on 22 March in 1969 in Davan village located 10-km away from Kazeroon city. He spent his childhood in Abadan and Shiraz and received his high school Diploma as the first-ranked student from Towhid high school in Shiraz in 1987. In the same year, having been elected to the National Students Mathematics Competitions, he has been admitted in Electrical Engineering Department at Khaje Nasireddin Toosi University of Technology, Tehran, Iran and graduated in 1992. Then he continued his education at Tarbiat Modares University and received the MSc. and Ph.D. degree both in Electrical Engineering in 1993 and 1998, respectively.
