Mohan veena refers to either of two distinct plucked string instruments used in Indian classical music, especially Hindustani classical music which is associated with the northern parts of the Indian subcontinent.
The first of these was a mix of the sarod, veena and surbahar, developed in 1948 by Radhika Mohan Maitra. [1] [2] In 1949, Thakur Jaidev Singh, the then chief producer of All India Radio, named the instrument 'Mohan veena' after him. [3] Pandit Maitra performed 22 national programs and several AIR recordings with the instrument before his untimely death in 1981. These recordings are treasures of AIR archives and now available in public domain. [4]
However, Pandit Joydeep Mukherjee (musician), a grand disciple of Pandit Maitra has revived this instrument in 2020. He was bestowed with Sangeet Natak Academy's Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar in 2019 for his work on the revival of rare instruments like Sursingar, Mohan Veena and also for playing the Sarod. Pandit Mukherjee has played this type of Mohan Veena in G20 Leaders' Summit held in New Delhi at Bharat Mandapam in September 2023 in front of the World Leaders and the Indian Prime Minister, President and cabinet of ministers. He was appreciated globally for this contribution.
The second instrument is a modified archtop Hawaiian guitar, created by Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, [5] and is the instrument most commonly referred to by the name Mohan veena. This instrument has between 19 and 21 strings in total: three to four melody and four to five drone strings strung from the peghead, and twelve sympathetic strings strung to the tuners mounted on the side of the neck. A gourd (tumba) is screwed into the back of the neck for improved sustain and resonance. It is held in the lap and played with a bar like a slide guitar.
The sarod is a stringed instrument, used in Hindustani music on the Indian subcontinent. Along with the sitar, it is among the most popular and prominent instruments. It is known for a deep, weighty, introspective sound, in contrast with the sweet, overtone-rich texture of the sitar, with sympathetic strings that give it a resonant, reverberant quality. A fretless instrument, it can produce the continuous slides between notes known as meend (glissandi), which are important in Indian music.
Ustad Bismillah Khan, often referred to by the title Ustad, was an Indian musician credited with popularizing the shehnai, a reeded woodwind instrument. He played it with such expressive virtuosity that he became a leading Hindustani classical music artist. His name was indelibly linked with the woodwind instrument. While the shehnai had importance as a folk instrument played primarily by musicians schooled in traditional ceremonies, Khan is credited with elevating its status and bringing it to the concert stage.
The Seni rebab, also known as the Seniya rabab is a plucked string instrument used in northern India that is said to have been developed by, and to have taken its name from, the notable musician Tansen in the time of the emperor Akbar the Great. It has "a large hook at the back of its head, making it easier for a musician to sling it over the shoulder and play it even while walking." It has been used in Hindustani classical music and religiously, in Sikh music. The rebab influenced the development of the sarod, another Indian musical instrument.
Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, known professionally as V. M. Bhatt, is an Indian Hindustani classical music instrumentalist who plays the Mohan veena.
Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya is an Indian classical musician who plays the santoor, a type of hammered dulcimer. He studied with Ravi Shankar. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 2018.

Buddhadev Das Gupta was an Indian classical musician who played the sarod. He used to reside in Kolkata, India. He was one of the artists featured in Nimbus Records' The Raga Guide.
Radhika Mohan Maitra (1917–1981) was an Indian sarod player who created the Mohan Veena in 1948, and the guru of Narendra Nath Dhar, Kalyan Mukherjea, Buddhadev Das Gupta, Sanjoy Bandopadhyay, Abanindra Maitra, Pranab Kumar Naha, Samarendra Nath Sikdar, Michael Robbins, and many other musicians of this generation. Maitra was considered an influential figure in 20th century sarod playing and received the title Sangeetacharya. He was among those awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1971.
The sursingar, sursringar or surshringar, is a musical instrument originating from the Indian subcontinent having many similarities with the sarod. It is larger than the sarod and produces a deeper sound. It precedes the sarod chronologically.
Pandit Kumar Bose, born 4 April 1953, is an Indian tabla musician and composer of Indian classical music.
Pandit Motiram Pandit Maniram Sangeet Samaroh is an annual Indian classical music festival held at Chowmahalla Palace in Hyderabad, India. The festival is organised by noted classical singer Pt. Jasraj in memory of his father and brother, both classical musicians. Jasraj always performs on 30 November every year, his father's death anniversary and a tribute to Jasraj's guru, his mentor and elder brother, Maniram, who died in 1986, and Jasraj renamed the festival to include his brother's name.

He is also a Prasar Bharati's All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan artist.

Pandit Niranjan Haldar is a retired senior Grade-A artist from All India Radio. He has more than 40 years of experience in Indian and Western classical music. He has presented Vichitra Veena and Guitar at various concerts and several events for Akashvani, Doordarshan and Sangeet Natak Akademi.

One of the finest exponents of the Shahjahapur/Gwalior Seniya Gharana, he is known for his purist style of play as well as his own emerging style. His style of playing can be distinguished from that of others.

He was awarded the Global India Music Academy Award in 2016 for his album Rhythm Express-Moods with Padma Bhushan Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. Prodyut is renowned as a composer, soloist, fusion, and classical musician, with a wide range of musical albums[6] to his credit. Prodyut Mukherjee is known for Roshni Ho Sarhadon Mein (2022).
