Mona McSharry (born 21 August 2000) is an Irish competitive swimmer. She is a two-time Olympian and won the bronze medal in the 100 metre breaststroke at the 2024 Summer Olympics. [1] [2] [3] [4] McSharry is also a World Championships (25m) and European Short Course Championships bronze medalist, a junior world champion and a two-time junior European champion.

McSharry is the holder of multiple national senior records, including 50 m, 100 m and 200 m breaststroke in both long course and short course, and 100 m individual medley in short course. [5]

Career

McSharry won her first international medals when she placed second in the 100 m breaststroke and third in the 50 m breaststroke at the 2016 European Junior Championships. In 2017, she won the 50 m breaststroke and 100 m breaststroke events, and placed second in the 200 breaststroke at the European Junior Championships in Netanya. In August of that year, she won the 100 m breaststroke event and finished third in the 50 m breaststroke at the World Junior Championships in Indianapolis. [6]

McSharry won the bronze medal in the 50 m breaststroke at the 2019 European Short Course Championships in Glasgow. [7] She competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, finishing eight in the 100 metre breaststroke event, and won the bronze medal in the 100 m breastroke at the 2021 World Championships (25 m). [8] [9] On 29 July 2024, McSharry won the bronze medal in the 100 metre breaststroke at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. [10] [4]

Personal life

McSharry grew up in Grange, County Sligo. [11] In 2019, McSharry and her family competed in the seventh series of the popular RTÉ reality competition, Ireland's Fittest Family . [12] They won the competition under the guidance of mentor, former rugby player, Donncha O'Callaghan. [13]

Fintan McCarthy is an Irish lightweight rower. He is an Irish national champion, world champion and double Olympic gold medallist. He won the men's lightweight double sculls championship title with Paul O'Donovan at the 2019 World Rowing Championships and at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where he set a new world's best time for that event. He also won a bronze medal in lightweight single sculls at the 2020 European Rowing Championships.

Ruby Storm is an Australian Paralympic swimmer with an intellectual disability. She represented Australia at the 2019 World Para Swimming Championships, winning a bronze medal, and at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, she won a silver and bronze medal. At the 2024 Paris Paralympics, she won a silver medal.

Colleen Young is an American swimmer. She is a three-time Paralympian earning a bronze medal at the 2016 Paralympic Games, as well as a bronze and a silver medal at the 2020 Paralympic Games. She has also earned multiple gold, silver and bronze medals at World Championships. She competes in the Paralympic class S13. In 2016 she set a Pan-American record in the 100m breaststroke.

Ellen Walshe is an Irish swimmer. She competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in the 100 metre butterfly and the 200 metre individual medley. At the 2021 World Swimming Championships, she won the silver medal in the 400 metre individual medley. She was the first swimmer representing Ireland to win a medal higher than a bronze medal at a World Swimming Championships. Collegiately, she competes for the Tennessee Volunteers.

Ron Polonsky is an Israeli Olympic swimmer. He won silver medals in the 2019 European Junior Championships and the 2023 European U-23 Championships, as well as the gold medal in the 2024 European Aquatics Championships, in the 200m IM. He also competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and won the silver medal in the 2024 NCAA Division I Championships in the 100 Y Breast. Polonsky represented Israel at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the 200 metre individual medley and the Mixed 4×100 metre medley relay.

Daniel Wiffen is an Irish swimmer. He is an Olympic champion and bronze medalist, two-time world champion and three-time European short course champion. In December 2024, he was named BBC Northern Ireland Sports Personality of the Year.
