The Monas incident was an incident in Merdeka Square in Jakarta in Indonesia on 1 June 2008.

It occurred at the National Monument (Monas) in an attack against a public protest by the activist group National Alliance for the Freedom of Faith and Religion (AKKBB) that coincided with the anniversary of Pancasila.[ citation needed ]

The incident began when AKKBB held the demonstration near the National Monument, Jakarta, and later the AKKBB aggregate was attacked by the group of Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) members. FPI masses beat the AKKBB protesters in various ways, including damaging of loudspeakers and burning of banners. 14 persons were reported injured and nine were taken to hospital. [1] The demonstration that had been coordinated with the police presence was then disbanded, thus some people fled to the National Gallery while inviting journalists to come to the rescue. [2] The head of the public relations department of police headquarters, the Inspector General Abubakar Nataprawira denied the police had made any negligence on the escort of the demonstrators. [3]

Reaction

Munarman, the head of Laskar Islam, stated that the attack was carried out due to the demonstration being the activism led by the Ahmadiyyah advocacy group, and unrelated with the commemoration of Pancasila doctrine. Munarman also corrected the media reports involving FPI members as the perpetrator and stated that the attack was carried out by the Laskar Islam Commando. The chairman of the Muslim Forum, Mashadi, also showed a video claimed to be a provocation on the account of AKKBB against the FPI members, which triggered the violence. The video contains a picture of a participant allegedly threatening FPI with the issuance of a weapon, but not in a clear form. [3]

Impact

The acts by the FPI members have resulted in some of the facilities at the National Monument being heavily damaged. This was conveyed by the Governor of Jakarta, Fauzi Bowo, subsequently stating that there will be consequences for any act of violation. Later, the governor asked the police department to investigate who the perpetrators of the vandalism were. [4] The incident was followed up by the deployment of 1,500 police officers at the FPI headquarters at Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta on June 4, 2008, and the arrest of 57 FPI members. Among the arrested was the FPI leader Muhammad Rizieq Shihab. [5] [6] [7] [8] Later Munarman has been also designated on the watch list by the police for escaping, and his whereabouts were unknown. [9] [8] The Monas incident had also sparked protests against the use of violence.

November 2016 Jakarta protests refer to an Islamist mass protest which took place on 4 November 2016 in Jakarta, Indonesia. It was attended by an estimated 50,000–200,000 protesters, and was aimed against the Governor of Jakarta Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, for alleged blasphemy of the Quran, the Islamic holy book. A counter-protest led by government officials and social activists in support of interfaith unity was led on 30 November.

On 24 May 2017, two explosions occurred at a bus terminal in Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta. Police confirmed that the explosions were caused by multiple explosive devices found in the toilet and in another part of the terminal. The bombings killed five people: three policemen and two attackers. The 11 injured people were taken to multiple hospitals across the Eastern Jakarta area.

February 2017 Jakarta protests refer to a series of mass protest led by Islamist movements which took place on 11 February 2017 and 21 February 2017 in Jakarta, Indonesia, and dubbed as the Action 112 and the Action 212 respectively. The protests were aimed against the incumbent Governor of Jakarta Special Capital Region Basuki Tjahaja Purnama for an alleged blasphemy of the Quran, the Islamic holy book.

December 2016 Jakarta protests, also known as 212 Action, the 3rd Defend Islam Action, and the 2 December Peace Protest, was a mass protest led by Islamist groups which took place on 2 December 2016, in Jakarta, Indonesia. During the protest, marchers demanded the termination of the gubernatorial office held by Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok), who had been accused of blasphemy. The protest was the second demonstration against Ahok in 2016 following the previous rally which took place on 4 November, and it was succeeded by the February 2017 Jakarta protests.

Islamic Defenders Front Indonesian hardline Islamist organization

The Islamic Defenders Front was an Indonesian hardline Islamist organization founded in 1998 by Muhammad Rizieq Shihab with backing from military and political figures. Since 2015, Ahmad Shabri Lubis has been the organization's leader, while Rizieq Shihab holds the title of Grand Imam of the FPI for life. The FPI originally positioned itself as an Islamic religious police, mostly by conducting illegal and unauthorized vigilante operations. Decree on Islamic Defenders Front

The Decree on Islamic Defenders Front or Joint Decree 220-4780/2020, M.HH-14.HH.05.05/2020, 690/2020, 264/2020, KB/3/XII/2020, 320/2020 is a decree enacted by six ministries and departments in Indonesia to prohibit any activity related to the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) and the use of its related symbols. The decree was enacted on 30 December 2020, and is currently in force. The decree was read by Deputy Minister of Human Rights and Law, Eddy Hiariej. The Indonesian government argues that the Islamic Defenders Front and its members violated the law and accuse its members of links to terrorists, justifying the ban. The decree prohibits any association with Islamic Defender Fronts and justifies the arrest of anyone involved in its activities or carrying any symbols related to it. The ministers of the Ministries of Home Affairs, Law and Human Rights, Communication and Information Technology, the Attorney General, the Chief of the National Police, and the National Counter Terrorism Agency signed the law.
