Munabao railway station is located in Barmer district in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is a railway transit point on the India–Pakistan border.

Munabao railway station is at an elevation of 80 metres (260 ft) and was assigned the code – MBF. [1]

History

A 1,000 mm (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in)-wide metre-gauge line from Luni to Shadipalli, in Sind, was built across the Thar Desert in 1902 and the line from Shadipalli to Hyderabad (now in Pakistan) was regauged. [2] The Luni–Barmer–Munabao section was converted to 5 ft 6 in (1,676 mm) broad gauge in 2004. [3]

During the Indo-Pakistani war of 1965, the railway station came under the control of Pakistan.

According to a 1929 issue of the Railway Gazette, the Sind Mail used to run on this route between Ahmedabad and Hyderabad, Sindh. The route was in use with through services between Jodhpur and Karachi till around 1965. On the Pakistan side, Khokhrapar was the terminus of a metre-gauge branch line from Hyderabad, Sindh via Mirpur Khas, 135 km from the border. [3]

The rail link across Munabao–Khokhrapar border was restored in 2006. As per the agreement between Indian and Pakistan railways, the Thar Express travels once a week from Karachi during a six-month block, crosses the international border, and the passengers change over to an Indian train at Munabao for their onward journey to Bhagat Ki Kothi in Jodhpur. On the Indian side the Thar Link Express runs non-stop once a week from Bhagat Ki Kothi (near Jodhpur) to Munabao and back. [1] Pakistan Railways have set up a new railway station at Zero Point [6] There is a passenger train linking Munabao to Barmer, which runs on all days except Monday. [1] [7]

Khokhropar or Khokhrapar is a border town situated in Tharparkar District, Sindh, Pakistan. It is located at 25°41 North 70°12 East and has an altitude of 71 metres (233 ft).

Munabao is a Bordering Village, approx.124 km from Barmer city in Barmer district in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It borders Pakistan. It is a designated border crossing, where a daily beating retreat border ceremony is held.

Marvi Railway Station (Urdu: ماروی ریلوے اسٹیشن, is the eastern terminus of the Hyderabad–Khokhrapar Branch Line. It is situated 8 km east of Khokhrapar, Sindh and lies on the Pakistan–India border. The station was constructed in February 2006 when Mirpur Khas–Munabao 1,000 mm railway was converted to the present day 1,676 mm. The station is used for immigration and customs of passengers who travel on the Thar Express between Pakistan and India.

Bhagat Ki Kothi railway station is a railway station on the North Western Railways network in the state of Rajasthan. It is located approximately 3 km from Jodhpur Junction.

Khokhropar Railway Station, also called Khokhrapar Railway Station, is located in Khokhrapar town, Sindh, Pakistan. This railway station, 70 km from Umerkot, was established in the late 19th century as the first railway station in Sindh on the India-Pakistan border. The valley comprises today's Sanghar, Mirpurkhas, Tharparkar and Umerkot districts. Rice and other grains were produced in huge quantity in the area. The people of Rajasthan used to travel to and from Khokhrapar railway station in a train called Raja-ji-Rail. It was called so because the Raja of Jodhpur and other Rajas of neighbouring princely states helped Indian Railways to lay down a 650-km meter-gauge track from Jodhpur to Hyderabad.

Hyderabad–Khokhrapar Branch Line is one of several branch lines in Pakistan, operated and maintained by Pakistan Railways. The line begins from Hyderabad Junction station and ends at Zero Point station. Currently, the line is active till Khokhropar The total length of this railway line is 211 kilometers (131 mi). There are 26 railway stations from Kotri Junction to Zero Point.

Sind Mail was a passenger train that ran between Bombay and Karachi during the British era in British India. This train used to operate via Ahmedabad–Palanpur–Marwar–Pali–Jodhpur–Luni–Barmer–Munabao–Khokhrapar–Mirpur Khas–Hyderabad. After partition this train was cut short from Hyderabad in Pakistan to Jodhpur in India. This train ran till 1965 and was discontinued due to 1965 war. Today Thar Express operate on this route.
