Myaundzha (Russian : Мя́унджа) is an urban locality (an urban-type settlement) in Susumansky District of Magadan Oblast, Russia, located in the Kolyma Mountains, on the right bank of the Myaundzha River (a part of the Ayan-Yuryakh River system), about 430 kilometers (270 mi) north-northwest of Magadan, the administrative center of the oblast. Russian is an East Slavic language, which is official in the Russian Federation, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, as well as being widely used throughout Eastern Europe, the Baltic states, the Caucasus and Central Asia. Urban-type settlement is an official designation for a semi-urban settlement, used in several Eastern European countries. The term was historically used in Bulgaria, Poland, and the Soviet Union, and remains in use today in 10 of the post-Soviet states.
It was founded in 1950 in conjunction with the construction of the coal-fired Arkagalinskaya thermal power station, which began operation in 1955.[ citation needed ] Urban-type settlement status was granted to it in 1957.[ citation needed ]
Most of the settlement's population is employed at the power station, which is the second largest source of electricity in the oblast behind the hydroelectric plant on the Kolyma River near Sinegorye.
The Kolyma River is a river in northeastern Siberia, whose basin covers parts of the Sakha Republic, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, and Magadan Oblast of Russia. It begins at the confluence of the Kulu River and the Ayan Yuryakh River and empties into the Kolyma Gulf of the East Siberian Sea, a division of the Arctic Ocean, at 69°30′N161°30′E. The Kolyma is 2,129 kilometres (1,323 mi) long. The area of its basin is 644,000 square kilometres (249,000 sq mi).
Sinegorye is an urban locality in Yagodninsky District of Magadan Oblast, Russia, located on the Kolyma River, 8 kilometers (5.0 mi) from Kolyma Hydroelectric Station. Population: 2,821 (2010 Census); 4,071 (2002 Census); 11,645 (1989 Census).
