Myung Sung Presbyterian Church is the largest Presbyterian church in the world. [2] It is located in Myung-il-dong,Seoul,South Korea,with its Prayer Sanctuary in Wonju. Myung Sung Presbyterian Church has over thirty church plants,including Myung Sung First Presbyterian Church,founded in 2004,and Myung Sung Second Presbyterian Church,founded in 2006. There are an additional ten "screen" (video) churches. The current senior pastor of the church is Pastor Kim Ha Na,and Dr. Kim Sam Whan has become the emeritus pastor.
Myungsung literally means "Voice (Sung in Korean) of Myungil-dong" (now Myeongil-dong). [3] The church was founded in 1980. Because there were many farms and orchards around the church,it had been renovated and developed into a huge [ clarification needed ] housing complex by the mid 1980s. In 1989,Myungsung Presbyterian Church was rebuilt on its current site,with a scale of almost 8754 m². In 1990,the senior pastor,Dr. Kim Sam Whan (김삼환),from Myungsung Church visited the Soviet Union (now Russia),and Poland for worship missions,as the first among the Protestant pastors in South Korea.[ citation needed ] In 2004,the church opened its affiliated hospital named MCM (Myungsung Christian Medical Center) [4] in Addis Ababa,Ethiopia,to serve untreated local people there. In 2012,a new main sanctuary was built beside the former building.
The church mottos are "Lord Only" and "Seven Year as One Day".
Myeongseong Church held its first Eunpa Forum to celebrate Pastor Kim Sam-hwan’s 60 years of ministry. Experts from various fields discussed the church's social contributions in education,healthcare,and social work,and explored future directions. Pastor Kim Ha-na emphasized the forum’s role in adapting the church’s ministry to meet contemporary needs. [5]
As of 2006 the Myungsung Mission Department has been able to support 56 nations through 92 families and 172 missionaries. Myungsung Church also supports small churches,schools,hospitals,community centers,and future leaders.
The succession controversy at Myeongseong Church began in 2017 when the founding pastor's son,Rev. Kim Hana,was appointed as the successor. This sparked significant backlash within the Christian community and beyond. Although the Presbyterian Church of Korea (TongHap) initially validated the appointment,the decision was later overturned by the General Assembly,which replaced its court members. However,a settlement allowed Rev. Kim Hana to assume leadership in 2021. The issue was ultimately resolved in March 2023 when the Korean Supreme Court ruled in favor of Myeongseong Church,dismissing a lawsuit challenging his leadership. [6]
As a result,a statement calling for the abolition of the ineffective church inheritance prevention law in the Presbyterian Church of Korea (TongHap) was released,sparking significant opposition within the denomination regarding the issue. [7]
A recording has been released revealing that Elder Pastor Kim Sam-hwan of Megacity Church was aware of the affair allegations against Pastor Kim Eui-sik,the General Assembly President of the Presbyterian Church in Korea (Tonghap). In the recording,Elder Pastor Kim is heard encouraging preparations for the General Assembly while stating that they should support Pastor Kim Eui-sik. [8]
In 2008,Rev. Yoo Kyung-jong was appointed as the senior pastor of Gwangju Myeongseong Church. Due to the absence of elders,his role automatically transitioned to that of head pastor in April 2010. However,as no elders were subsequently appointed and no request for his reappointment was made,he was classified as a pastor without a congregation (*muim moksa*) by the presbytery in April 2013. This status raised legal issues,as it led to his disqualification and loss of official pastoral authority. [9]

The General Assembly of Presbyterian Church in Korea (GAPCK),also known as Yejang Hapdong (Korean: 예장합동) or just Hapdong,is an Evangelical Presbyterian denomination,which is the biggest Christian church in South Korea. The headquarters of the church is in Seoul,South Korea.
The Conservative Presbyterian Church in Korea was formed in 1963 when Pastor Kim Oh-Sung gathered 102 congregations to form a new denomination. Choi Sung-Gon became the moderator. Their conviction was that the neo-orthodox theology was the main reason of the division between the Presbyterian Church in Korea (TongHap) and the Presbyterian Church in Korea (HapDong). The conservative Calvinism was propagated in this new church. For 5–6 years the church was inactive. Graduates from SungHwa seminary —Cho Won-Kuk,Kim Duk-Sun,and Chung In-Young —met in 1972 and succeeded in restoring the denomination. When HapDong divided in 1979,many ministers and about 200 congregations joined non-mainline churches of HapDong. Only 22 stayed in BoSu. In 2004 it had 12,779 members and 110 congregations. It affirms the Westminster Confession and the Apostles Creed.
The church history dates back to 1948,the foundation of the DaeHan Seminary and with Rev. Kim Chi-sun,Pastor Kim Su-do,Rev. Yun Phil-sung started evening courses for the formation of the candidate of ministry. In 1960 the HapDong and TongHap split. Rev. Kim Chi-sun who belonged to hapDong founded the Bible Presbyterian Church in Korea. Soon tension arose between the Seminary and the Bible Presbyterian Church. In 1968 Kim withdrew from ICCC. Kim Chi-sun was running the Daeshin Seminary by himself. He tried to get his son appointed as director of the seminary. This idea was opposed by the professor of the Seminary,he was Choi Soon-jik who started with his follower the HapDongJinRi denomination,the leading figure was Huh Kwang-jae. In 1972 Kim Chi-sun and his son withdrew the denomination. The Daeshin group later revised its constitution. In 1974 the church adopted the "Declaration of the Church" and amended the new constitution in 1976. It joined the Council of Presbyterian Churches in Korea in 1980 and the World Alliance of Reformed Churches in 1992. Daeshin has experienced steady growth in recent years. It has 140,000 members in 1,170 congregations,30 Presbyteries and a General Assembly. The church subscribes to the Apostles Creed and the Westminster Confession. Presbyterian Church in Korea (HwanWon) was founded by Pastor Song Jae-Muk,who separated from the Presbyterian Church in Korea (HoHun). In 1969 the General Assembly of HwanWon accepted the services of a missionary of the Westminster Presbyterian World Mission,namely Robert S. Rapp. HwanWon suffered several splits. The denomination lost most of its strength and the new moderator decided to united with the JungAng presbytery and the JeongTong. The united church become the Presbyterian Church in Korea (HapDongHwanWon).
The Presbyterian Church in Korea (HapDongBoSu) was founded within JengRip Presbyterian church. In 1984 become a separated denomination. Pastor Han Chun-Keun,Pastor Kim Kuk-In,Pastor Lee Sun-Sik together with 50 pastors founded the Presbyterian Church in Korea (HapDongJeongRip). In 1989 it adopted the current name. The Apostles Creed and the Westminster Confession the standards. In 2004 it had 3,800 members and 74 congregations served by 64 pastors. It had 4 Presbyteries and a General assembly.
The Korean Presbyterian Church was formed in 1981,when it was separated from the Presbyterian Church in Korea (HapDong). In 1973 before HapDong was divided,about 400 neutral congregations formed a 17-member committee to promote reconciliation,but this effort proved useless. The non-mainline HapDong group separated and fragmented into JongAm and BangBae and GaeHyuk. An attempt was made to unite these churches without success. The GaeHyuk denomination was officially founded in 1981. The Apostles' Creed and the Westminster Confession are the officially accepted standards. In 2004 the denomination had 633,600 members and 2,030 congregations served by 2,010 ordained pastors in 31 presbyteries and a General Assembly. There is currently no female ordination.
The HoHun church separated from the Presbyterian Church in Korea (HapDong). In 1961 25 delegates to the Assembly among the Pastor Kim Yun-Chan and Pastor Kim Yun-Chan formed a special association for the safeguard of the conservative Reformed faith. The following year they formed HoHun. Conflict in leadership arose in the early 1960s. A group led by Pastor Lee Do-Bong sought to prolong Park Byung-Hun in the leadership. A new moderator Rev. Song Jae-Muk separated and formed the Presbyterian Church in Korea HwanWon. A clash occurred in the denomination. Later the church had overcome successfully of the financial difficulties. Rev. Sin Eun-Kyun was elected as moderator. A year later Park Byung-Hun and his followers separated,after Park's death most of his former followers returned to HoHun. In 1982 the church established the Committee for Combining Denominations. Several small denominations joined HoHun as a result. In 2004 it had 120,000 members and 910 congregations in 39 Presbyteries and a General Assembly. The Church adheres to the Apostles Creed and Westminster Confession.
