NTA Kaduna

NTA Kaduna is a regional branch of the Nigerian Television Authority headquartered in Kaduna, capital of the Kaduna State eponymous state. Its origins date back to the former BCNN, which eventually became Radio Kaduna Television.

History

The government of the Northern Region, owner of the Broadcasting Corporation of Northern Nigeria (BCNN), negotiated in 1961 [1] with two British companies (the Granada group and EMI). Together, they would "provide television to the three main centres: Kano, the Commercial Centre of the North; Kaduna, the Capital of Northern Nigeria; and Zaria, the academic Centre of the North". [2]

Radio Kaduna Television (RKTV) began broadcasting on 15 March 1962 on VHF channel 4 using a temporary studio at the Independence Hall of Government College, Kaduna, in an attempt from the regional government to start ahead of deadline. [3] In August 1962, it started broadcasting to Zaria (channel 4) and in February 1963, to Kano (channel 10). [4] In the same month, RKTV moved to new, permanent facilities at No. 7 Hospital Road, from where it broadcast three hours a day, six days a week. One third of RKTV's programmes were produced locally, in both English and Hausa languages. At the time, RKTV had the most advanced television infrastructure in Nigeria, coupled with a high number of potential viewers, as the region alone had a population of 30 million. Out of all the television stations that existed in Nigeria at the time, it was the only one that had favorable relations to the government, without breaking contracts. [3]

RKTV was the first station in Nigeria to air the British sci-fi series Doctor Who on 3 August 1965, also the first television station in Africa overall. During this period, the station broadcast on average four hours a day, starting at 6:30pm with a reading of the Quran and ending at approximately 10:30pm after the late news. [5] By the early 1970s, it was broadcasting from 5pm to 12:15am daily. [4]

With the creation of the new Nigerian Television Authority, following the increase in states, Kaduna was put under zone D, in central-northern Nigeria, also supervising NTA Kano and NTA Jos. [3] NTA Kano was formerly under the jurisdiction of RKTV and subsequently became its own station. NTA Kaduna's coverage area has since been reduced to the state of Kaduna alone. [1]

The Nigerian Television Authority or NTA is a Nigerian government-owned and partly commercial broadcast station. Originally known as Nigerian Television (NTV), it was inaugurated in 1977 with a monopoly on national television broadcasting, after a takeover of regional television stations by military governmental authorities in 1976. After a declining interest from the public in government-influenced programming, it lost its monopoly over television broadcasting in Nigeria in the 1990s.

Railways in Nigeria consist of a 3,505 km Cape gauge national railway network and 669 km of standard gauge. The Cape gauge network is in poor condition due to lack of maintenance. In 2019, the single operational standard gauge line from Abuja to Kaduna generated as much revenue as the entire Cape gauge railway network combined. The Nigerian government plans to extend the standard gauge to replace most of the Western Line, while the Eastern Line will be rehabilitated as a Cape gauge line. All trains in Nigeria are operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation.

The Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) is a Nigerian state radio broadcasting organization. Its flagship station is the syndicated radio network Radio Nigeria, with FM stations across the 36 states and Zonal station in the 6 geopolitical zones that broadcast in the SW. According to FRCN, it is the largest broadcasting organization in Africa.

The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) is a public research university located in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria. It was opened in 1962 as the University of Northern Nigeria. The university has four colleges, three schools, 18 faculties, 110 academic departments, 17 centres, and seven institutes with over 600 professors, about 3000 academic staff and over 7000 non-teaching staff. The university has over 400 postgraduate programmes reflecting its strife to become a postgraduate studies-centred university. The university operates from two campuses in the ancient cosmopolitan city of Zaria, the Samaru Campus where the Senate Building and most of the faculties are located and the Kongo Campus, hosting the faculties of Law and Administration. It has been adjudged to be the largest university in Sub-Saharan Africa, in terms of land occupied, owing to the numerous buildings it has.

NTA Yola is the local branch of the Nigerian Television Authority in Yola, capital of the state of Ademawa.

NTA Enugu is a television station under the Nigerian Television Authority network, located in Enugu, the capital of Enugu State. It was established post-Nigerian Civil War as the successor to the Eastern Nigeria Television (ENTV). As a pioneer in Nigerian broadcasting, ENTV's slogan was "Second to None," reflecting its status following the first station, Western Nigeria Television (WNTV).

NTA Jos is a unit of the Nigerian Television Authority seated in Jos, capital of the Plateau State. It was established as Benue-Plateau Television (BPTV) in 1974, shortly before being integrated into the new NTA network in 1977. NTA Jos also operates the NTA Television College.

NTA Lagos is a Zonal Network Centre of the Nigerian Television Authority in Lagos, Nigeria's largest city. It was established in 1962 as the first station under the federal government - all other television stations in Nigeria were set up under the individual state governments. NTA Lagos is one out of two centres that have two television stations, the NTA centre in Abuja, the federal capital, is the only other centre with such a structure.

NTA Ikeja was a television station in Ikeja, Lagos State, owned by the Nigerian Television Authority. It operated on VHF channel 7 throughout its existence.

NTA Port Harcourt is the Nigerian Television Authority regional centre for the state of Rivers in south-central Nigeria, headquartered in its capital Port Harcourt. It is also the zonal network centre for the area. The station broadcasts on VHF channel 10.
