He previously served as the 10th Menteri Besar of Perak from March 2008 to the collapse of his administration in February 2009,represented Changkat Jering from May 2013 to May 2018 and Pasir Panjang from March 2008 to May 2013 in the legislative assembly,and represented Bukit Gantang in the Dewan Rakyat from April 2009 to May 2013.

He is a member of the National Trust Party (AMANAH),a component party of the PH coalition and was a member of the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS),a component party of formerly the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalition. In AMANAH,he has served as a Vice-President since September 2021 and State Chairman of Malacca since August 2017. He was also the Treasurer-General of AMANAH prior to his promotion to the party vice presidency. He is also the sole Malacca AMANAH MLA.

He served as the 17th Menteri Besar of Johor from April 2019 to the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) state administration in February 2020 and Member of the Johor State Executive Council (EXCO) in the PH state administration under former Menteri Besar Osman Sapian from May 2018 to his promotion to the Menteri Besarship in April 2019 as well as Chairman of the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (MPIB) from May 2020 to December 2022. He is a member of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (BERSATU),a component party of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) and formerly PH coalitions. He is also the shortest-serving Menteri Besar of Johor in the history of the Johor after serving in the position for only 321 days.
The 2020–2022 Malaysian political crisis was triggered after several Members of Parliament (MPs) of the 14th Malaysian Parliament changed party support,leading to the loss of a parliamentary majority,the collapse of two successive coalition governments,and the resignation of two Prime Ministers. The political crisis culminated in a 2022 snap general election and eventual formation of a coalition government. Sharifah Azizah binti Syed Zain was a Malaysian politician who served as Member of the Johor State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Penawar from May 2018 to March 2022 and for Mahkota from March 2022 to her death in August 2024. She was the Women Division chief of Kluang of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO),a component party of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition. Sharifah Azizah died from internal bleeding in Kluang,Johor,on 2 August 2024,at the age of 63. A by-election was held on 28 September 2024,Syed Hussein Syed Abdullah of BN was elected as the new Mahkota MLA.
