Nalamasa Krishna is a left-wing social activist and a lawyer from Telangana, India.

Early life and education

Krishna was born in 1979 to a middle-class family in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh. He then pursued his Master of Arts and Bachelor of Laws from Osmania University and a doctoral degree from English and Foreign Languages University.[ citation needed ]

Career

Besides practicing law, he served as vice-president of Telangana Praja Front, a regional political movement which was formed as a Telangana separatist organisation, demanding statehood for the Telangana region that was then a part of Andhra Pradesh. [1]

In recent years, he was active in anti-Uranium mining struggle in Nallamala Forest [2] area and also participated in public protests in the aftermath of Gauri Lankesh's murder. [3]

In 2019, Krishna was arrested along with state president of Telangana Vidyarthi Vedika (TVV), Bandari Maddilet for in actively recruiting new members and collecting funds for the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist). [4] They are also accused of supporting bandh calls and various activities conducted by their respective parties in urban areas of Telangana state. [5] However, the Telangana High Court deemed his arrest as unlawful. [6] [7]

Finally, in 2020, National Investigation Agency filed a chargesheet against Krishna under the Telangana Public Security Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. [8] The charges were related to his involvement in a criminal conspiracy aimed at recruiting youth and generating funds for the Maoist party through affiliated organizations, including Telangana Vidyarthi Vedika and Telangana Praja Front. [9] [10] He was later granted bail due to health issues. [11] [12]

Gauri Lankesh was an Indian activist and journalist from Bangalore, Karnataka. She worked as an editor in Lankesh Patrike, a Kannada weekly started by her father P. Lankesh, and ran her own weekly called Gauri Lankesh Patrike. She was murdered outside her home in Rajarajeshwari Nagar on 5 September 2017. At the time of her death, Gauri was known for being a critic of right-wing Hindu extremism. She was honoured with Anna Politkovskaya Award for speaking against right-wing Hindu extremism, campaigning for women's rights and opposing caste based discrimination.

The 2018 Bhima Koregaon violence refers to violence during an annual celebratory gathering on 1 January 2018 at Bhima Koregaon to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Bhima Koregaon. The violence and stone pelting by a crowd at the gathering resulted in the death of a 28-year old youth and injuries to five others. The annual celebration, also called Elgar Parishad convention, was organised by retired justices B. G. Kolse Patil and P. B. Sawant. Justice Sawant stated that the term "Elgar" meant loud invitation or loud declaration.

Rona Wilson is an activist, researcher and the public relations secretary of the Committee for Release of Political Prisoners (CRPP). He has worked with people accused in terrorism cases, including those booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). He is an accused in the 2018 Bhima Koregaon violence.
