Ayurveda is an alternative medicine system with historical roots in the Indian subcontinent. It is heavily practiced throughout India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, where as much as 80% of the population report using ayurveda. The theory and practice of ayurveda is pseudoscientific; some ayurvedic medicines have been found to contain toxic substances.

P. R. Krishna Kumar was an Indian Ayurveda expert and managing director of The Arya Vaidya Pharmacy (Coimbatore) Ltd. He established The Ayurvedic Trust, overseeing AVCRI and AVP Research Foundation, a non-profit organisation promoting research in the Ayurveda. He was the chancellor of the Avinashilingam University, and the chairman of CARe Keralam, a resource centre involved in efforts to standardise Ayurvedic medicines. The Government of India awarded him the fourth-highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2009, for his contributions to Ayurveda.
The Government Ayurveda Medical College Kannur is situated in Pariyaram, Kannur. It is one of the three Ayurveda medical colleges in Kerala. The college has 150 bed strength. There are 14 clinical departments functioning there; they offer one UG course, a Bachelor's in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery.and 5 PG Courses and 1 Diploma Course, Certificate Courses in Ayurveda Therapist and Nursing. In the Kerala University of Health Sciences' North Zone arts festival, they emerged in second place.
J.B. Roy State Ayurvedic Medical College & Hospital is a ayurvedic medical college and hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It was established in 1916 and one of the oldest ayurvedic medical college in West Bengal. This ayurvedic college is affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences. This college is also recognized by the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India. It offers BAMS degree course.
