Malabar Cancer Centre (MCC) in Thalassery, Kannur district is an autonomous not-for-profit institution under Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Kerala. In June 2022, the institute was upgraded to Post Graduate Institute of Oncology Sciences and Research.

History

The Malabar Cancer Center was started in the year 2000 when Pinarayi Vijayan was the Minister for Electricity. [3] The institution was inaugurated in 2001, by the E. K. Nayanar Government, under the Electricity Department and later handed over to the Health Department in 2008. [3] In 2017, the Kerala Startup Mission signed a memorandum of understanding with the Malabar Cancer Center to establish a cancer care startup ecosystem in the state. [4] In 2018, then Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has announced that the Malabar Cancer Center will be upgraded to RCC standards. [5] [4] He also said that the government will take steps to set up a post-graduate center at the center. [4] In June 2022, the institute was upgraded to Post Graduate Institute of Oncology Sciences and Research.

Cancer Treatment Centre

The Malabar Cancer Center is an important government treatment center exclusively for treating cancer patients in Kerala, mainly in the Malabar region, the neighboring states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and Mahe, a district in the Union Territory of Puducherry. [4] There are several disciplines in the institute including Pediatric Hematology, Pediatric Oncology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiology, and Interventional Radiology. [3] In 2008, 1040 new patients were consulted in MCC, while in 2019 the number of new patients increased to 6500. [3] In 2019, the number of patients seeking follow-up treatment has increased to 77477 and 4600 people have been admitted for inpatient treatment. [3]

Post Graduate Institute of Oncology Sciences and Research

The Diplomate of National Board (DNB) Course in oncology was started in 2017 as part of the upgradation of MCC, a Research Center under the Kerala University of Health Sciences, to a Post Graduate Institute. [6] In June 2022, the Ministry of Kerala declared the Malabar Cancer Center as the Post Graduate Institute of Oncology Sciences and Research. [7] Kerala Health Minister Veena George said that, as part of this, the center will be renamed as the Malabar Cancer Center (Post Graduate Institute of Oncology Sciences and Research). [7] The Minister said that as a PG Institute, courses like MD, MCH and DM under the National Medical Commission could be started at the institute. [7] Currently, about 270 students and six PhD research students are studying at the institute. [7]

Achievements

In the government sector, the Department of Ocular Oncology is being set up for the first time in the state at this institute. [8] As of 2022, the Malabar Cancer Center is the only government-run institution in Kerala to perform Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in children. [8]

MCC was the only institution in Kerala to be approved for conducting human clinical trials for COVID-19 vaccine. [9] The MCC was able to achieve this because it had all the facilities suggested by Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC). [9]

Pinarayi Vijayan 12th Chief Minister of Kerala

Pinarayi Vijayan is an Indian politician who is the current Chief Minister of Kerala, serving since 25 May 2016. A member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), he is the longest-serving secretary of the Kerala State Committee of the CPI(M) (1998–2015). He also served in the government of Kerala as Minister of Electric Power and Co-operatives from 1996 to 1998. Vijayan won a seat in the May 2016 Kerala Legislative Assembly election as the CPI(M) candidate for Dharmadom constituency and was selected as the leader of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and became the 12th Chief Minister of Kerala. Regional Cancer Centres (RCCs) are cancer care hospitals and research institutes operating in India under the joint control and funding of the Government of India and the respective state governments. The name 'regional' because each of these institutions cater to a designated region, usually a number of districts in the country. There are presently 25 such centres spanning all the states and union territories of India. This system works under the National Cancer Control Programme which started in 1975 under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (India). The scheme originally started with 5 RCCs for 5 designated regions of the nation. Later this number was increased in steps. The present number of RCCs is more than 25 and the union government is planning to assign RCC status to more regional cancer hospitals. In 2011, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy looked to have Malabar Cancer Centre, Thalassery upgraded to the level of a regional cancer centre.

The Government of India honoured him, in 2014, by awarding him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the fields of science and technology. Dharmajan Bolgatty is an Indian actor, producer, comedian, politician and entrepreneur, who works in Malayalam films, television, and stage shows. He began his career as a comedian appearing in sketch comedies on stage, later forayed into such comedic television shows and into films in 2010s. Dharmajan entered active politics in 2021, ahead of the assembly elections in Kerala. 2016 Kerala Legislative Assembly election Elections for the 14th Legislative Assembly of Kerala

The 2016 Kerala Legislative Assembly election was held on 16 May 2016 to elect 140 MLAs to the 14th Kerala Legislative Assembly.

First Pinarayi Vijayan ministry is the Council of Ministers headed by Pinarayi Vijayan that was formed after the Left Democratic Front (LDF) won the 2016 Kerala Legislative Assembly elections. The Council assumed office on 25 May 2016. The ministry had a total of 19 ministers in the Cabinet at the time of swearing-in compared to 21 ministers in the previous government. Pinarayi Vijayan sworn in as 22nd Chief Minister of Kerala, 12th person to hold this position. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on 3 May 2021 submitted the resignation of the Council of Ministers headed by him to Governor Arif Mohammed Khan after winning a historic victory in the 15th legislative assembly elections by winning 99 of the 140 seats in the Assembly.

Vanita Ratnam awards are the awards, instituted and given every year by the Women and child development department of Government of Kerala to honor the women who excel in various fields of social service, education, literature, governance, science, arts and culture, health, media, sports, acting and women empowerment. The award which carries a cash prize of 300 thousand rupees each, was instituted in December 2013 and started to give away from 2014.

2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election 14th Indian state election

The 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election was held in Kerala on 6 April 2021 to elect 140 members to the 15th Kerala Legislative Assembly. The results were declared on 2 May.

Malabar Botanical Garden and Institute of Plant Sciences (MBGIPS) is a botanical garden located in Olavanna Grampanchayat, Kozhikode District, Kerala, India. Considering aquatic plant species, it is one of the leading botanical gardens in India. The botanical garden is a member of the Botanic Gardens Conservation International and has international agenda registration. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Govt. of India has approved MBGIPS as a “Lead Botanic Garden” in the conservation of aquatic plants. In 2015, the institute became a research institute under the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE). It is also the accredited research center of the University of Calicut and the Regional Centre of Expertise in Sustainable education of United Nations University, Japan.
