Narcissus was an American hardcore band formed by John LaRussa and John Pope in 1998 in Canton, Ohio. In addition to John Pope (vocals, keyboards) and John LaRussa (guitar), who were in the band from start to finish, members included, at various times, Justin Carroll (bass), Ray Taylor (rhythm guitar), Derek Carter (percussion), Bill Wensel (percussion), Stephen Cushman (percussion) and Josh King (bass). The band was on the now-defunct label Takehold Records before joining Century Media. A few albums were re-released through Tooth & Nail. Before breaking up the band were featured on The Vans Warped tour [3] and were getting ready to hit Europe for their international release of Crave and Collapse, which was received well overseas. They announced that they have reunited and become a band again in 2020 after John Pope and John LaRussa were offered a spot on the famous Furnace Fest, performing on day 1, September 24, 2021, along with bands Converge, Glassjaw, Killswitch Engage, Everytime I Die and many others. They performed their first show on September 11, 2021.

The band has been considered highly influential for their progressive and inventive style of post hardcore, rock and metal. When the band broke up in 2003, John LaRussa went on to form Inhale Exhale with Brian Pittman, a former member of Relient K. John Pope joined Symphony In Peril briefly in 2003, and six months after he joined they disbanded. The band has toured with many bands including MewithoutYou, Silverstein, Underoath, Bayside, Further Seems Forever, Zao, Embodyment, [4] Shelter, [5] and , [6] Few Left Standing, [6] In 2020, the band reunited. [7] In 2021 they headlined their first show back on September 11, 2021, and at the famous Furnace Fest on Day 1 on September 24, 2021. More shows are in works, along with new material that the band are working on.

History

Narcissus began in 1998 with the lineup of John Pope on vocals, John LaRussa on guitars, Ray Taylor on guitars, Justin Carroll on bass, and Derek Carter on drums. [3] Carroll and LaRussa had been a part of a band prior to Narcissus called Slow to Anger and Pope had also been in a band called Divine Division before, with both bands playing together which is how they met. [7] Taylor and Carter joined on once the band was created. After being active for a brief time, Carter departed for a time with Bill Wensel taking over drums. [7] With this lineup, the band recorded their debut EP, ...And Forthwith Came Out Blood and Water. [7] The EP came out through Clenched Fist Records. After the EP was released, Carter rejoined the band on drums, with Wensel and Taylor both departing. [7]

In 2000, the band signed with Takehold Records, a label operated out of Birmingham, Alabama by Chad Johnson, who sent the band up to Delaware, where they were set to record their debut album at Clay Creek Studios. [6] With Nick Rotundo engineering the album, the band recorded and released their debut first full length album, Newwave Techno Homicide, which came out that year. [6] After the album came out, the band embarked on the 40 Days of Disaster Tour alongside Tantrum of the Muse, Few Left Standing, and Underoath. [6] Following the tour, Carter departed from the band. [6] Carroll would also depart soon after Carter. [6] Former Relient K drummer Stephen Cushman would take over the drum position and Josh King, former drummer of Vessel would take over bass duties. At the time of King's addition into the band, the band was finishing recording their sophomore album and EP, Becoming Leviathan on Take Hold Records.

After a long year of touring and performing for labels including a show at the legendary CBGBs in New York, The band decided to sign with Century Media Records and their subsidiary Abacus Records, which led to the band re-releasing Becoming Leviathan with three additional tracks. After the album's release the band would embark on a few brief tours with such bands as Further Seems Forever, Silverstein, Bayside, Me Without You, Shelter and playing shows alongside Converge, Brand New, Nora, Underoath and many more including numerous music festivals. In 2003, the band recorded and released their third album, Crave and Collapse, which came out through Century Media/Abacus and Sony Red World Wide. [6] [7] The band would then embark on a month long tour with Embodyment. [4] They also Appeared on the 2003 Vans Warped Tour. After the album release, the band decided to disband do to differences and pursuing other endeavors in life.

After disbanding, each members went on to do their own thing with Pope joining Symphony in Peril and LaRussa going on to form Inhale Exhale. [7] [8] [9] King would later start a new band called Not Beneath, with his best friend Danny Pelletier, formerly of Outcry and North Meadow Park, which released an album called Memento Mori. The band's current lineup consists of Gillespie, keyboardist Christopher Dudley, lead guitarist Timothy McTague, bassist Grant Brandell, and lead vocalist Spencer Chamberlain. Originally, the band identified as a Christian group; they have since distanced themselves from Christianity.

They're Only Chasing Safety is the fourth studio album by American rock band Underoath. It was released on June 15, 2004, through Solid State Records. Following the release of their third studio effort The Changing of Times (2002), half of the band's members were replaced. After finalizing the line-up with vocalist Spencer Chamberlain, the band recorded their next release with producer James Paul Wisner at his home studio Wisner Productions in February 2004. The album has been tagged with various genres including screamo and melodic hardcore and features subtle references to Christianity. Drummer Aaron Gillespie had more of a vocal presence to contrast Chamberlain's screams.

<i>Cries of the Past</i> 2000 studio album by Underoath

Cries of the Past is the second studio album by American rock band Underoath, released on July 4, 2000, through Takehold Records. Only 3,000 copies of the album were pressed and, like Act of Depression, it was out of print for years. The album is the last to feature guitarist Corey Steger and the first to include keyboardist Christopher Dudley. Alongside their debut album, this album was reissued through Solid State Records on August 20, 2013.

Five months after the release of their fourth studio album They're Only Chasing Safety, the band were already in the process of working towards its follow-up. Recording took place between January and March 2006 at Zing Recording Studios in Westfield, Massachusetts, and Glow in the Dark Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, with Adam Dutkiewicz of Killswitch Engage, Matt Goldman and the band as producers. Define the Great Line is predominantly a metalcore and emo album, which has also been tagged as Christian metal, post-metal and post-hardcore. The variety of styles was an unintentional move by the band, who took influence from At the Drive-In, Beloved and Cult of Luna, among others.

Tantrum of the Muse was a heavy metal band based out of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The band formed in 1998 and disbanded in 2004. The band members refers to their existence as "The Tantrum Reign of Terror".

Lost in the Sound of Separation is the sixth studio album by American rock band Underoath. It was released on September 2, 2008, through Solid State and Tooth & Nail Records. Following the release of their fifth studio album Define the Great Line (2006), relationships between members became strained to the point they almost broke up. They decided to go on a hiatus; Lost in the Sound of Separation was recorded at Glow in the Dark Studios in Atlanta, Georgia in March and April 2008. The band produced the album with Adam Dutkiewicz and Matt Goldman, both of whom worked on Define the Great Line. The album has been described as metalcore, post-hardcore and screamo, with elements of industrial, recalling the works of Refused, At the Drive-In, and Cult of Luna.

Ø (Disambiguation) is the seventh studio album by American rock band Underoath. Released on November 9, 2010, through Tooth & Nail Records, the album was the band's only without founding member Aaron Gillespie, and is the first and only record by the band with Daniel Davison, formerly of Norma Jean. It was also their final album before a two-year breakup from 2013 to 2015. They would not release another studio album until 2018's Erase Me. Ø (Disambiguation) was met with acclaim and was recorded at Glow in the Dark Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, the same studio where the band's previous album, Lost in the Sound of Separation was recorded.

Few Left Standing is a Christian metal band that primarily played Christian hardcore and was signed to Takehold Records. The band's debut album was produced by Living Sacrifice frontman, Bruce Fitzhugh. The band has toured with Underoath, Narcissus, and Tantrum of the Muse. On December 3, 2019, it was announced that the band would be returning to perform at Furnace Fest 2020, alongside a recently reunited Beloved.

<i>Voyeurist</i> 2022 studio album by Underoath

Voyeurist is the ninth studio album by American rock band Underoath, released on January 14, 2022, via Fearless Records, after a three-month pushback due to vinyl production delays. It is their first album in four years following Erase Me (2018), marking the longest gap between two studio albums in the band's career without breaking up and it is the final album with rhythm guitarist James Smith who was fired from the band in March 2023.

It serves as a follow-up to their sixth studio album, How It Feels to Be Lost (2019). It is their first album to feature drummer Matty Best of Tonight Alive who replaced longtime drummer Gabe Barham. It is also their final album to feature longtime guitarist Jack Fowler, who departed the band before the album's release.
