National Defence College, Uganda is a National Security and Strategic Studies training and educational institution in Uganda. [1] [2]
The college is located in Njeru, in Buikwe District. This is near the city of Jinja, approximately 81 kilometres (50 mi), by road, east of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. [3] [4]
The Defence College is expected to produce graduates in strategic leadership to government on national and international security matters. It is intended to be an institute of excellence on defence, security and national development. [5]
In September 2018, the Ugandan Chief of Defence Forces, General David Muhoozi, established a committee to spearhead the establishment of the defence college in 2019. The committee was chaired by Lieutenant General Nakibus Lakara, the Commander of the Uganda Rapid Deployment Capability Centre (URDCC), based in Jinja. Lydia Wanyoto, a Ugandan lawyer, politician and diplomat, was one of the committee members. [5]
According to the army commander, the National Defence College will offer training to civilians, military, national security professionals and future leaders. The training is intended to educate the students about the strategic security environment and the management of complexities at a strategic level. At this time, the UPDF has a sufficient number of senior officers, with the requisite knowledge, experience and background information to become instructors at the defence college. [5]
The NDCU admitted its first cohort of students, numbering about 20, in January 2022. The students are first-star generals (Brigadier), senior military commanders (Colonel) and high ranking government personnel. [2]
The College is affiliated with Makerere University, Uganda's oldest and largest public university. Graduates will receive a National Defence Collège badge and a master's degree, awarded by Makerere University. [6]
As of January 2022, the college offers two courses (a) Postgraduate Diploma in National Security Studies and (b) Masters in Security Strategy, offered in collaboration with Makerere University. [7]
Members of the pioneer class at NDCU (2022), include Brigadier Flavia Byekwaso, previously spokesperson for the UPDF. [8] Others are Colonel Edith Nakalema, previously Head of State House Anti Corruption Unit (SHACU), [9] and Brigadier Peter Candia, previously Commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC). [10] There were 18 UPDF officers in the pioneer class. [11] The second cohort of officers, numbering 21, graduated in June 2024. [12] [13]
The Uganda Senior Command and Staff College (USCSC) is a training facility for senior commanders in the Uganda People's Defense Force (UPDF), including the army, air force, and special forces.
Muhoozi Kainerugaba is a Ugandan military officer. He is the son of President Yoweri Museveni and currently serves as the Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda People's Defence Forces. He is also the chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda.

General David Rubakuba Muhoozi is a Ugandan Military Officer and Lawyer. He currently serves as the Minister of State for Internal Affairs. He was appointed to that position on 6 June 2021, replacing Obiga Kania.
General Wilson Mbasu Mbadi is a senior military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Minister of State for trade, industry and cooperatives. He served as the Chief of Defense Forces, the highest position in Uganda's military from June 2021 until March 2024 having replaced General David Muhoozi, who was appointed State Minister of Internal Affairs.
Leopold Eric Kyanda, is a Major General in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). He currently serves as the Joint Chief of Staff of the UPDF, effective 24 June 2021. He replaced Lieutenant General Joseph Musanyufu who was redeployed to the civil service.
Benon Biraaro was a Ugandan military officer and a high-ranking commander in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). While still in the active military, he served as the commandant of the Uganda Senior Command and Staff College in Kimaka, Jinja. In 2016, he ran (unsuccessfully) for President of Uganda on behalf of his agrarian Farmers Party of Uganda.
Major General Richard Prit Olum, commonly known as Dick Olum, is a military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). Effective 13 May 2024, he serves as commander of the "South Sudan Stabilization Mechanism", an observer force to ensure adherence to the peace agreements. Before that, he served as the Ugandan commander of the UPDF forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo under the joint Uganda/DRC mission code named Operation Shujaa. He contemporaneously served as the commander of the UPDF Mountain Division, based in Fort Portal, Kabarole District at the base of the Rwenzori Mountains. His appointment was made on 12 October 2022.
James Nakibus Lakara, commonly known as Nakibus Lakara, is a Ugandan Lieutenant General in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). Since June 2016, he has been the commander of the Uganda Rapid Deployment Capability Centre based in Jinja in the Eastern Region of Uganda. From April 2015 until June 2016, he served as the deputy force commander of the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) and was in charge of logistical support. From July 2013 until April 2015, he served as the commanding officer of the UPDF 3rd Division, based in Moroto.
Felix Kulayigye is a brigadier general in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). Effective 4 February 2022, he is the official spokesperson of the UPDF, replacing Brigadier Flavia Byekwaso, who was sent on a course at the National Defense College, Uganda. This is his second tour in the same post, having served in this role from 2005 until 2013.
Colonel Edith Nakalema, is a Ugandan military officer, who graduated in August 2018 from the Higher Command and Staff Course at the Joint Services Command and Staff College, in Watchfield, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, where she had been admitted in 2017.
Major General Steven Sabiiti Muzeyi, is a Ugandan military officer and police officer, who served as the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) of the Uganda Police Force, the second-highest rank in that branch of the Ugandan government, from 4 March 2018 until 16 December 2020. He replaced Martin Okoth Ochola, who was promoted to Inspector General of Police. Immediately prior to his assignment as Deputy IGP, Sabiiti, at the rank of brigadier, served as the Commander of the Military Police of the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). Sabiiti was replaced as Deputy IGP by Major General Paul Lokech. On Friday, 5 February 2021, Major Genenral Sabiiti Muzeyi was appointed General Manager Luwero Industries, a subsidiary of National Enterprise Corporation (NEC).
Joseph Musanyufu, is a lieutenant general in the Uganda People's Defence Force,(UPDF), who serves as the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Internal Affairs, Uganda. Immediately prior to his current appointment, he served as Joint Chief of Staff, the third highest rank in the Ugandan military, and is known to have four children, 2 sons and 2 daughters . Musanyufu also served as the Chief of Personnel and Administration in the UPDF, a position that he was appointed to in 2014.
Major General Don William Nabasa, is a Ugandan military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). He currently serves as the Commander of the UPDF Military Police, effective 26 October 2021. Before that, he was the Commander of the Uganda Contingent in Somalia as part of AMISOM.
Brigadier Stephen Kusasira, is a Ugandan obstetrician, gynecologist, military officer and medical administrator in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). He serves as the Director of Medical Services in the UPDF.
James Birungi, is a Major General in the Uganda People's Defence Force Air Force (UPDAF). He serves as the Chief of Military Intelligence in the UPDF, effective January 2022.
